Council postpones action on vacancy - Aug. 15 deadline to fill empty seat approaching

The Warren Sentinel

FRONT ROYAL ó With the days counting down until Council's Aug. 15 deadline to fill its vacancy, the body voted Monday night to postpone making an appointment.

No date was set for a vote.

Council has until Aug. 15 to appoint a person to fill the remainder of Bebhinn Egger's term or announce a special election to fill the seat. Egger resigned June 30 after getting married June 23 and moving out of town. Her term ends Dec. 31, 2018.

"We have had quite a few really great qualified candidates come forward," Councilman John P. Connolly said. "We've also had some council members who were out on vacation throughout this process."

Connolly said the fairest course of action would be to delay the vote until all council members have had adequate time to review the candidates.

Eight candidates have expressed interest and interviewed for the appointment. Council can choose one of those candidates — or even a town resident who didnít apply but would accept the appointment.

Another option would be to hold a special election. However, that option is more expensive. Council has filled the last couple of vacancies by appointment for that reason.

If council fails to appoint a replacement or announce a special election by the deadline, a Warren County Circuit Court judge will have the option of appointing a replacement.
