Elkton fires EACC director

HARRISONBURG — Elkton is seeking a new director for its community center following the dismissal of the man who led the facility’s operations for 15 months.

Wayne Printz, Elkton’s mayor and interim town manager, said Mark Pedersen was terminated as the Elkton Area Community Center’s director on July 18.

He’d been on the job since April 18, 2016, when he was hired at a starting salary of $42,000 annually.

Printz declined to provide a reason for the dismissal, saying it was a personnel matter. The action, he said, was taken following discussions among council members in closed session, though no vote was cast.

Pedersen, contacted by email, declined comment.

Until the position is filled, Printz said Diane Johnson, Elkton’s recreation director, will oversee EACC operations.

Printz and Councilman Jeff Jones, Town Council’s representative to its Recreation Committee, will provide assistance.

Following a special called meeting on July 24, the council voted to advertise the position.

Printz said council members are reviewing the EACC director’s job description to see if they want to make any changes before advertising the post.

They’re also studying their personnel ad to make sure it’s “as inclusive as possible,” he said, so as not to limit anyone from applying.

“We want to make sure we have a good advertisement,” said Printz, “that opens up equal employment availability to everyone and will not be restrictive.”
