ELKTON – Some friendly emergency squad competition will be going on in town this week.

The Elkton Emergency Squad will be hosting a competition at Elkton Area Community Center on Sunday, Feb. 28.

The competition, which will likely feature 10 to 12 squads, will run from 8 a.m. until noon Sunday morning, according to Elkton Emergency Squad Chief Carroll Baugher.

The competition will include extrication, basic life support, advanced life support and emergency vehicle operator contests. The latter involves drivers moving forward and backward through traffic cones.

The public is invited to come watch, Baugher said. He estimates some 50 to 80 people from 10 to 12 emergency squads will be competing. Elkton previously hosted such a competition for the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads, Inc. at Elkton Middle School eight or nine years ago, he said.

The VAVRS will conduct a meeting at 1 p.m. following the competition, which was postponed from Jan. 24 due to Winter Storm Jonas.
