Grottoes one of the state’s safest towns

GROTTOES – Grottoes has been named the fifth-safest city or town in the state.

The website ConsumerAffairs.com used data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Census Bureau to make the ranking.

Grottoes has the fifth-lowest burglary odds out of 127 cities in the commonwealth, placing behind Williamsburg, Purcellville, Glade Spring and Chincoteague.

Rounding out the top 10 were: Halifax, Vienna, West Point, Edinburg and Culpeper.

Other area localities of note and their ranking include: Front Royal (21), Timberville (33), Stanley (38), Luray (40), Dayton (42), Shenandoah (81), Elkton (83), Charlottesville (87) and Harrisonburg (100).

Portsmouth and Appalachia were in 126th and 127th place.

Grottoes Town Manager Jeff Nicely said he is excited about the ranking.

“The Town of Grottoes is made up of many honest hardworking people,” he said via email. “We also have a great Police Department that takes a lot of pride in protecting our citizens and their property.”

The report used data from 2014.

According to the ranking, the safest place nationwide is Hopkinton, Mass. The least-safe place is City of Industry, Calif., which is located east of Los Angeles.
