LURAY ― The Luray Downtown Initiative (LDI) will “pay it forward” this Saturday during its second Tailgate Party, when competing teams will vie for a chance at a $5,000 grand prize for one of three local nonprofit groups.

During the inaugural “Pay it Forward” Tailgate event last September, LDI netted nearly $24,000 to continue its downtown efforts, while contributing $5,000 to the winning team “Campbell Thunder” on behalf of the Va. Tech Corps of Cadets.

With ticket-casting attendees determining the winner, “Campbell Thunder” edged out second-place finisher the “Page County Public Schools' Field Trip Fund” by just four votes ― prompting the LDI Board of Directors to add a $1,000 prize for the No. 2 team at this year's event.

Competing teams include “U.Va.” for the Luray High School Athletic Department, “Va. Tech” for the Page One Food Bank and “Page County Walk” for the Alzheimer's Association.

“It's a fun event to help one another and for the community to get involved,” said Page One Manager Lois Shaffer. “It's important that the community is aware of different needs and the work that nonprofit groups do in our county.”

If named the winner, the LHS Athletic Department plans to use the grand prize to refinish the floor in the school's gymnasium, while the Alzheimer's Association would earmark the money to go toward its 2016 Walk to End Alzheimer's in October on the Luray-Hawksbill Greenway. Page One would use prize money to purchase supplies for its food pantry, which serves about 176 local families each month.

LDI will use a portion of its proceeds to go toward the purchase of new holiday decorations for Downtown Luray. The group recently partnered with the town's parks and recreation department in a $5,000 project to replace the decorations on Main Street.

During Saturday's event, LDI will highlight some of its achievements from the past year while sharing its vision for not only the downtown area ― but the community as a whole.

“We want to give back to the community,” said LDI Program Manager Jeff McMillan. “This is a way for nonprofit groups to help one another, business professionals to network and locals to enjoy music, drinks and food on a beautiful Saturday at the Singing Tower.”

The Second “Pay it Forward” Tailgate Party kicks off at 2 p.m. this Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Luray Singing Tower, and runs till 5 p.m. The event will feature games, food and music by the Robbie Limon Band.
Tickets are $25, and can be purchased at the gate.
