Linden man dies in crash

MARSHALL — A Linden man was killed Monday morning in a head-on crash with a snow plow on a slick Fauquier County road, Virginia State Police said.

Steven H. Gibbs, 63, was westbound on Crest Hill Road, near Ada Road southwest of Marshall, shortly before 7 a.m. when he crossed the center line in his 1999 Chevrolet Suburban and collided with the snow plow, state police said. He died at the scene, State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said in a news release.

Monday's snowstorm left roads treacherous throughout the state, which contributed to the crash.

"Speed and slick road conditions were factors in the crash, which remains under investigation at this time," Geller said.

The driver of the snow plow was not injured in the crash, troopers said.

The road, which runs between Marshall and Flint Hill, was re-opened by 9:40a.m., Geller said.

Temperatures rose Monday night and the snow was followed by sleet and freezing rain. That left roads just as treacherous Tuesday morning.

Then, as the snow and ice melted, local creeks filled. Some went over their banks, prompting road closures in low-lying locations, including the 8th Street Bridge, Luray Avenue at the railroad overpass and the Morgan Ford Road bridge.
