Page County Relay for Life promotes remembrance, celebration, honor

LURAY ― Community residents will gather this weekend to remember, celebrate and honor those affected by cancer during Page County's 18th annual Relay for Life event.

Since kicking off locally in 2000, the county's united fight against cancer has raised more than $1 million for the American Cancer Society.

“A lot of people underestimate the value that the ACS provides for the county,” said co-leader of Page County's event leadership team Katie Long. “Instead of funding people individually, they use funds to help find a cure ― and that helps us all.”

During the 2016 Relay event, Page County residents contributed more than $67,000 to the national organization. So far this year, local teams and individual participants have raised more than $26,000 toward an $80,000 fundraising goal, according to the American Cancer Society's website as of press time Tuesday.

Friday's festivities kick off at 5 p.m. with a survivor and caregiver banquet in the cafeteria at Luray High School, followed by an opening ceremony at 6 p.m. featuring survivor and caregiver laps. Participants will remember those who lost their battles with cancer during a luminaria ceremony at 9 p.m.

In recognition of this year's theme ― “Decades of Hope” ― Page County's Relay will feature themed laps, highlighting music and dance moves from decades past.

Other activities and entertainment include food and games, a silent auction, a lip sync battle, a tricycle race and more.

The 18th annual Page County Relay for Life officially begins at 6 p.m. this Friday, June 16, and runs till 6 a.m. Saturday, June 17, in the Luray High School parking lot.

“I know the importance of trying to find a cure,” said Long, noting the loved ones in her life that lost their battles with cancer. “For the survivors, [Relay for Life] gives them a sense of community. It's a way for us to show them that we all support them; we're all there with them in the fight.”
