Seventh student charged in Strasburg sexual assault

STRASBURG — A seventh Strasburg High School student has been charged in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a school basketball player in December.

Shenandoah County sheriff’s deputies served a petition to the 16-year-old boy on Feb. 12, according to Maj. Scott Proctor of the sheriff’s office. A petition is the juvenile justice equivalent of an indictment.

Three 16-year-olds and three 17-year-olds, all SHS students and basketball players, made their first appearances in juvenile and domestic relations court in Woodstock on Feb. 11. They received petitions on Jan. 21.

All seven suspects are charged with assault and battery by a mob and are accused of attacking a 16-year-old teammate on a bus used for athletic transportation on Dec. 19.

Strasburg police reported the alleged assault to the sheriff’s office on Jan. 12. The report led SHS and the county school division to cancel its boys’ varsity and junior varsity basketball seasons.

The seventh suspect is scheduled to appear in JDR court on March 3.
