Sidewalk construction planned in Grottoes

GROTTOES – A new sidewalk is in the planning stages for Va. 256.

The sidewalk would be built on the north side of Weyers Cave Road, Virginia Department of Transportation official Michael Fulcher said.

It will run some 3,500 feet from Broad Alley, where the current sidewalk ends, to Holly Avenue near the South Fork of the Shenandoah River.

The sidewalk will come at a cost of around $500,000 and is scheduled for construction in the spring of 2017, Fulcher said. It will be paid for with federal urban construction funds.

The sidewalk would be built within the existing street right of way and not require any additional right of way or easements from adjacent private property owners.

Council approved the item at its regular meeting on Jan. 11.

Signatures now required
In other news, Rockingham County Voter Registrar Lisa Gooden advised town officials that future council candidates will need to submit 125 signatures of registered voters to get on the ballot.

Candidates previously just submitted a form, Town Manager Jeff Nicely said.

The new process is required as a result of the town having more than 1,500 registered voters.

The deadline to file paperwork and signatures for the November election is June 14.
