GROTTOES — The Grand Caverns Signature 5K is coming Friday, Sept. 30.

An announcement about the race was made at the Grottoes Council meeting on Sept. 19.

It is the fifth year of the event, which includes two races per year, organizer Mike Betts said.

The same-day registration fee is $29 with students of all ages getting in for $24.

In addition to the “flat and fast” 5K race at 6 p.m., a 1-mile “Fun Run” or walk starts at 6:05 p.m. Both will be held rain or shine.

All funds go toward the purchase and installation of fitness stations at Grand Caverns Park.

So far, the races have generated $15,500 for seven fitness stations, including Rockingham County’s only wheelchair-accessible station that is located near the park’s welcome center.

All of the able-bodied fitness stations are located next to the 1-mile trail within the park.

Plans are to purchase a chin-up bar station and warmup and cool down stations next, Betts said.

New public works director
Town Manager Jeff Nicely announced that the town hired A.J. Hummel as public works director. His first day was July 11.
Hummel, 43, of Bridgewater, previously was a crew leader for the Rockingham County utilities department. He replaces Shannon Clem, who left to work at Rockingham County Public Schools’ maintenance department.

Nicely said council approved an expenditure for $1,600 to cut down four trees in Mountain View Park.
