Strasburg High principal moving to Muhlenberg Middle

STRASBURG — Strasburg High School’s principal will switch schools and grade levels this summer after two years on the job.

On April 12, the Shenandoah County School Board approved the transfer of Morgan Saeler, 39, to Peter Muhlenberg Middle School in Woodstock, where he will become principal on July 1.

The School Board also approved the resignation of Mandy Roller, Muhlenberg’s current principal. She will join Hilda J. Barbour Elementary in Front Royal as its newest principal on July 3.

Saeler taught seventh grade social studies at Muhlenberg from 2001 to 2007. He has been an assistant principal at all three county high schools and became Strasburg High’s principal in July 2015.

Saeler said the chance to return to the place where his educational career began led him to accept Muhlenberg’s top job.

“This is an opportunity for me to return to the school that shaped much of my educational philosophy and leadership style,” he said.

Saeler’s two years leading Strasburg High included a nationally-publicized case in which the sexual assault of a 16-year-old boys’ basketball player on a team bus was caught on camera on Dec. 19, 2015. Three of the seven students involved were expelled in May.

Saeler reported the crime to the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office, the Strasburg Police Department and the school division in January. The report led to the cancellation of the school’s 2016 varsity and junior varsity basketball seasons and a court battle between the School Board and the sheriff’s office – which the board won – over whether the board could view the video of the crime captured by the bus’s security camera.

Schools Superintendent Mark Johnston praised Saeler’s leadership, teamwork and “ability to handle challenging situations” as the reasons why the board chose him to lead Muhlenberg.

“Mr. Saeler has my utmost confidence,” Johnston said. “I am excited for the Peter Muhlenberg students, staff, parents and community.”

Roller started as Muhlenberg’s principal in August. She started teaching at Signal Knob Middle in Strasburg in 1994 and served as an assistant principal there from 2012 until she moved to Muhlenberg.
