Virginia Air Show cleared for takeoff this weekend

FRONT ROYAL — Planes, a miniature train and automobiles will be some of the attractions to entice motorheads of all ages at the ninth-annual Virginia Air Show.

The air show will take off at 7 a.m. with a hot air balloon launch at the Front Royal-Warren County Airport at 229 Stokes Road Airport Road off Rivermont Drive.

During a noon ceremony, a skydiver will descend from above with the American flag in tow while "The Star Spangled Banner" plays.

The air show is set to feature The Flying Circus Airshow, an aerobatic performance by a crew based in Bealeton. The show also will include static airplane displays and fly-bys by aircraft including gyro copters and a P-51 Mustang.

"The Department of Aviation for Virginia actually thinks that our airshow has the most variety of aircraft that you'll see at any airshow anywhere," airshow sponsor Ken Thurman said.

The P-51 Mustang, which Thurman called one of the most beautiful planes to see in the air, is one of the show's more popular attractions.

"The Mustang aircraft is how the Mustang car got its name. So we get a lot of Mustang car owners just to get their cars pictured with the airplane," Thurman said.

There will also be a car show that could feature up to 100 vehicles and will display "everything from classics to new cars," Thurman said.

Previously held in September, four of the last five airshows were held on rainy days, so the date was moved up to avoid bad weather. The rain did not affect flying, but attendance dropped.

Thurman said previous attendances on nice days have reached between 4,000 and 5,000. Thurman said that many people are expected to attend on Saturday if the weather cooperates.

The National Weather Service forecast for Warren County features clear skies all day Saturday.

While parents can enjoy a beer and wine tent, children will be able ride around the premises on a miniature train and enjoy free face painting and balloon animals.

Tickets cost $5 for adults. Admission is free for children 6 and younger. Tickets can be purchased at, at the Warren County Visitors Center, at the Front Royal-Warren County Airport or at the gate.

A portion of the air show proceeds will support the Humane Society of Warren County and the D.A.R.E program, Thurman said.
