Carolyn J. Cook


Carolyn June Showalter Cook, 71, of Grottoes, passed away Sunday, May 14, 2017, at Harrisonburg Health and Rehab Center.

She was born June 9, 1945, in Rockingham County, and was a daughter of the late Jacob Daniel and Mazie Mabel Wilkins Showalter.

She was a homemaker who loved to travel and spend time with her children and grandchildren.

On Sept. 1, 1974, she married Jerry Cook, who survives.

Also surviving are her children, Christina Cook of Grottoes and Candice Shull and Shawn Cook, both of Verona; a brother, Ralph Showalter of Broadway; and six grandchildren.

Pastor John Lock conducted a funeral service Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at 11 a.m., at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial followed at Trissels Mennonite Church Cemetery.

The family received friends Tuesday at the funeral home.

Michael J. Houck Sr.


Michael Joseph Houck Sr., 56, of Stanley, passed away Wednesday, May 10, 2017, at Sentara RMH Medical Center.

The family received friends at Bradley Funeral Home on Friday, May 12, with a funeral held Saturday, May 13, at the funeral home.

Burial was at Bethlehem Cemetery in Stanley.

Arrangements were by Bradley Funeral Home in Luray.



Unity M. Powell


Dr. Unity Monger Powell, 95, of Covington, passed away Thursday, May 11, 2017, at her residence.

She was the wife of the late M. Leon Powell.

She was born Jan. 2, 1922, in Elkton, a daughter of the late Ralph Showalter Monger and Lillye Kaylor Monger.

Upon coming to the area in 1952 from Harrisonburg, she was the first woman doctor to practice in Covington and the surrounding community.

She was a member of Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Dr. Peggy Powell Rollins of Charleston, W.Va.; an adopted daughter, the Rev. Susan Carlson; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was conducted Monday, May 15, 2017, at Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Russell Urban officiating.

Viewing took place at the church prior to the service.

Interment was conducted Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at Woodbine Cemetery in Harrisonburg.

The family suggests that memorial tributes be made to Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church, 425 W. Main St., Covington, VA 24426.

Elizabeth A. Shifflett


Elizabeth Ann Shifflett, 70, of Bridgewater, passed away Saturday, May 13, 2017, at Sentara RMH Medical Center.

She was born April 19, 1947, and was a daughter of the late Anna Lee (Tumer) and Charlie Gordon Davis.

She worked for Universal Security Professional Security and was a member of Bridgewater Baptist Church.

Her favorite hobbies were reading, crocheting, counted cross stitch, and sewing.

On April 30, 1994, she was united in marriage to Eugene F. Shifflett, who survives.

She is also survived by two daughters, Jennifer Turner of Hamlet, N.C. and Janice Eye of Bridgewater; three stepsons, Frank Shifflett of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Howard Shifflett of Waynesboro and James (Eddie) Shifflett of Waynesboro; a brother, Charles A. Davis; sister, Mary Edith Dull; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Friends and family are welcome to visit her home anytime.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 18, 2017, at Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater.

Leona W. Layman


Leona Whitmer Layman, 87, of Broadway, passed away Friday, May 12, 2017, at her residence.

She was born Feb. 3, 1930, in Rockingham County, and was a daughter of the late Herman L. and Beulah Hillyard Whitmer.

She worked 27 years as a press operator for Ileen in New Market.

She was a member of Bethlehem United Church of Christ in Tenth Legion and a member of the Ryan-Bowman VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

On April 30, 1947, she married Carl A. Layman, who preceded her in death on March 21, 2009.

Surviving are sons, Bill Layman of Rockingham and Duane Layman of Stanley; a sister, Phoebe Knight of Waynesboro; a brother, Billy Whitmer of Florida; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren, six stepgreat-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

At her request, her body was cremated and there will be a memorial service at a later date.

Joyce F. Hall


Joyce Faye Hall, 67, of Harrisonburg, passed away Friday, May 12, 2017, at her home surrounded by her family.

She was born Nov. 29, 1949, in Harrisonburg, and was a daughter of Mary Smith Liskey of Dayton and the late Cecil Charles Liskey Sr. She was raised in Rockingham County and graduated from Turner Ashby High School in 1968.

She was employed at Virginia Department of Transportation, retiring after 36 years.

She was a member of Harrisonburg First Church of the Brethren and enjoyed cooking, baking, golfing, square-dancing, line-dancing, clogging, camping, yearly trips to the Outer Banks, crossword puzzles, reading and avid bird-watching.

On July 14, 1968, she married Robert Parker Hall, who survives. They met at the age of 13 while in the eighth grade.

She is also survived by two daughters, Monique L. Hall of Forest and Misti H. Smith of Harrisonburg; three brothers, Charlie Liskey Jr. of Mount Crawford, Mike Liskey and Jeff Liskey, both of Bridgewater; two sisters, Sharon L. Barrix of McGaheysville and Maribeth Liskey of Sarasota, Fla.; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2017, at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg with the Rev. J.D. Glick officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.

Although she loved flowers, she requested memorial contributions be made to Sentara RMH Hahn Cancer Center, 2010 Health Campus Drive, Harrisonburg, VA 22801.

Elizabeth M. Meadows


Elizabeth Marie Meadows, 92, of Elkton, passed away Wednesday, May 10, 2017, at Sentara RMH Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 12, 1925, in Rockingham County, and was a daughter of the late Richard and Quinnie Mowbray Shifflett. She was the oldest of nine children.

She worked for Sleepware and later retired from Metro Pants as a seamstress.

She enjoyed flowers, gardening and listening to bluegrass and country music.

She was a member of the Saint Stephen and Good Shepherd Church in Rocky Bar.

On June 21, 1944, she married Dennis C. Meadows Sr., who survives.

She is also survived by her daughters, Barbara Dean and Carolyn Taylor, both of Elkton; a sister, Bonnie Tracy of Harrisonburg; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Saturday, May 13, 2017, at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton with the Rev. Laura Lockey officiating.

Burial followed at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.

Renate Rickert


Renate Rickert, 72, of McGaheysville, passed away Monday, May 8, 2017, at Sentara RMH Medical Center.

She was born April 17, 1945, in Halle, Germany, to the late Joachim and Hildegard Kanthack Engehausen.

She enjoyed researching health-related topics, business ventures, gardening and family.

She is survived by her husband, Elwin Rickert; a son, Lucas Reindler; a daughter, Qita Reindler; four stepchildren; and 14 grandchildren.

Plans are being made for a memorial service. The date and location to be determined.

Interment will be at a later date in God’s Acre Cemetery in Peru, N.Y.

Lanie E. Knight


Lanie Elizabeth Knight, 64, of Elkton, passed away Monday, May 15, 2017, at her home.

She was born July 28, 1952, and was a daughter of the late Howard Franklin and Effie Duaine Watson Meadows.

She is survived by a son, Justin Knight; and a daughter, Jennifer Wyant.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2017, at Faith Alive Fellowship with Pastor Donnie Meadows officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service.

John S. Hensley Sr.


John Steven Hensley Sr., 70, of McGaheysville, passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at his home.

Mr. Hensley was born May 6, 1947, in Harrisonburg, and was a son of the late Cleatus “Jack” and Mae Thomas Hensley.

Steve retired from Merck & Co. in 2002.

He was a charter member of the McGaheysville Fire Department, a longtime member of the Christian Motorcycle Association and a previous assistant scout master with the Boy Scouts of America.

He was a Mason and Shriner with the Ashlar Lodge 125.

He enjoyed playing the mandolin, barbecuing and cooking on his Big Green Egg, was a master plumber, gardener and amateur radio operator.

He is survived by his wife, Jo Anne Hensley, whom he married Nov. 17, 1973.

Also surviving are sons, John S. Hensley Jr. of Harrisonburg, Jeffrey A. Hensley and wife, Leigh, and A.J. Hensley, all of McGaheysville; grandson, Steven Edward; two nieces, four nephews, including a close nephew, Ray Hensley Jr. and wife, Lisa, of Harrisonburg and a special sister-in- law, Linda Layman.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Hensley.

Pastor Jerry Smith led a funeral service Saturday, May 13, 2017, at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. Interment was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville with Masonic Rites.

The family received friends Friday, May 12, at the funeral home.
