Mary H. Craig


Mary Harlow Craig, 80, of Shenandoah, passed away Jan. 1, 2016, at her home.

Mrs. Craig was born Aug. 19, 1935, in Mount Solon, and was a daughter of the late Lucien H. Harlow and Stella Talmedge Milstead Harlow.

She was a member of the Grove Hill United Methodist Church.

She worked at Marvel Poultry Plant for 42 years, from 1955-98.

On April 8, 1956, she married Leonard Craig.

Also surviving are sons, Dwight Craig and David Craig of Shenandoah and Jeffrey Craig, of Sugar Grove, W.Va.; a daughter, Kathy Hostetter of Elkton; three grandchildren; a stepgrandson; seven great-grandchildren; a stepgreat-granddaughter; and one sister, Peggy Huffer of Mount Solon.

The family received friends at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton on Monday.

The funeral service was held Tuesday, Jan. 5, at Grove Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ellen Martin officiating.

Interment followed and was at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Robert P. Zirkle Sr.


Robert Page Zirkle Sr., 93, of Shenandoah, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015, at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born Feb. 28, 1922, in Page County, and was a son of the late Clyde E. and Blanche Strickler Zirkle.

He was also preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Louise C. Dofflemyer.

He served in the U.S. Army in World War II in Egypt.

He retired from the U.S. Postal Service, where he worked as a clerk for more than 37 years.

He is survived by two sons, Robert Page Zirkle Jr. of Shenandoah and J. Keith Zirkle of Newark, Del.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Ruth Righter.

A graveside service was held at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens on Monday, Jan. 4, 2016, with Pastor Phyllis Diamond officiating.

The family received friends Monday, Jan. 4, 2016, at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.

Larry E. Frazier


Larry Eugene Frazier, 52, of Elkton, passed away Dec. 28, 2015, at his home.

Mr. Frazier was born Jan. 8, 1963, in Harrisonburg, and was a son of Arbutus Lam Frazier of Elkton and the late Charles E. Frazier.

He was a member of Saint Stephen & The Good Shepherd Episcopal Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing, old cars, especially Fords, and was an avid Miami Dolphins fan.

He had previously worked at E. A. Breeden Inc. and C&C Guttering.

Besides his mother, he is survived by sisters, Peggy Breeden of Elkton and Darlene Campbell of Grottoes; and former wife, Sherry Jo Boyers of Keezletown.

Dan Breeden conducted the funeral service Thursday, Dec. 31, 2015, at Saint Stephen & The Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Rocky Bar.

Burial followed the funeral and was in Elk Run Cemetery in Elkton.

Minnie J. Raynes


Minnie Jerleen Shifflett Raynes, 85, of Elkton, passed away Dec. 31, 2015, in Harrisonburg.

Mrs. Raynes was born June 19, 1930, in the Rocky Bar area near Elkton, and was a daughter of the late James Earman and Mary Roach Shifflett.

She worked at Owens Brockway for a number of years and was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Saint Stephen & the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Rocky Bar.

She enjoyed gardening and doing needlepoint and was an avid Baltimore Orioles fan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis R. Raynes.

She is survived by a daughter, whom she resided with a number of years, Wanda Weaver of Mount Crawford; brothers, Kenneth Shifflett of Harrisonburg and Floyd Shifflett of Elkton; sisters, Violet (Rennie) Braun of Roanoke, Venda Almarode of Grottoes and Mary Breeden of Elkton; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Dan Breeden conducted the funeral service Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016, at the Saint Stephen & the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Rocky Bar.

Burial followed in Mount Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville.

Betty J. Monger


Betty Jane Burkett Monger, 83, of Elkton, passed away Dec. 31, 2015, at Sentara RMH Medical Center.

She departed this life to be with her late husband, James E., and son, Jimmy.

She was born Jan. 23, 1932, in Rockingham County, to the late Herman E. and Louise Hester Sipe Burkett.

Betty and James were married April 19, 1952 – a union of 57 years.

Betty was a 1950 graduate of Elkton High School and worked for the Rockingham County Schools for 32 years before retiring.

She was a member of the East Point United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Bonnie Lou Monger and husband, Larry, of Elkton; grandsons, Bradley Monger and girlfriend, Emily Cave, Steven Monger and girlfriend, Shari Dean, and her children, Autumn and Tyler Alt, a granddaughter Jamie Zimmerman and husband, Austin; very special great-grandchildren, Jamie Monger, Branson Monger, Abigail and Austin Zimmerman.

Lay Minister Harold Smith conducted a memorial service Tuesday, Jan. 5, at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. A private burial will be held at a later date.

Wayne E. Campbell


Wayne Edward Campbell, 78, of Shenandoah, passed away Dec. 22, 2015, at his home.

He was born Jan. 18, 1937, and was a son of the late Ervy Lee and Martha Virginia Higgs Campbell.

He was a bricklayer and worked for Charlie’s Backhoe Service for many years before retiring.

He is survived by a daughter, Darlene Sawyer; stepsons, Dale Courtney and James Courtney; step-daughters, Anna Housden and Debbie Knott; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Roy and Donnie Campbell.

His wife, Charlene Breeden Campbell, preceded him in death.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Bern H. Castle


Bern Howland Castle, 71, of Grottoes, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2015, at his home.

He was born Feb. 6, 1944, and was a son of the late Jeannette Elizabeth (Ashmead) and Clifford Gray Castle.

He owned and operated a janitorial business that stripped and polished floors for more than 25 years and had served in the U.S. Navy.

A graveside service was conducted Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016, at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg with Pastor Wayne Wright officiating.

Johnson Funeral Service in Grottoes is entrusted with arrangements.

John S. Hensley


John S. Hensley, 89, of Elkton, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015, in Elkton.

He was born Feb. 14, 1926, in Rockingham County, and was a son of the late Jessie and Catherine Shaw Hensley.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and then the Korean War. He was a lifetime member of Gooden Brothers VFW Post 9292.

He and his brother, Lucius Hensley, owned and operated the Hensley Texaco in Elkton for 10 years. He then, along with his wife, operated John’s Grocery in Elkton for more than 20 years and also delivered meals throughout the community for Meals on Wheels for several years.

He was a member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church in Elkton.

On July 3, 1948, he married Ruth Virginia Hensley, who preceded him in death on Nov. 26, 1994.

He is survived by a daughter, Sharon Carr; son, Keith Hensley; four grandchildren; six great- grandchildren; and sister, Esther McDaniel.

A funeral service was held Thursday, Dec. 31, 2015, at Evangelical United Methodist Church in Elkton with Pastor Sarah Bailey officiating.

Burial followed at Elk Run Cemetery.

Thelma Rexrode


Thelma Rexrode, 93, of Harrisonburg and formerly of Dayton, passed away Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, at Oak Lea Nursing Home.

She was born in Rockingham County, on Jan. 16, 1922, and was a daughter of the late Beulah C. (Coberly) and Clarence E. Ritchie.

She worked for more than 25 years until her retirement from Walker Manufacturing and was a member of Saint Michael’s United Church of Christ in Bridgewater.

She was united in marriage, on Nov. 28, 1974, to Bobby Ray Rexrode, who preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 2008.

She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Marshall Hilbert, who passed away in 1947.

She is survived by two daughters, Pat Harman of Penn Laird and Cindy Riggs of Charlottesville; five sons, Billy Hilbert of Elkton, Kenneth Hilbert of Bridgewater, Jerry Hilbert of Harrisonburg, Tom Hilbert of Mount Crawford and Rick Fox of Bridgewater; a brother, Loyd E. “Buck” Ritchie; 18 grandchildren; 26 greatgrandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016, at Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater.

Burial followed at Clover Hill Cemetery.

Wade M. Shifflett


Wade Mainer Shifflett, 68, of Broadway, passed away Dec. 29, 2015, at his home.

He was born Feb. 25, 1947, in Rockingham County, and was a son of the late Lonnie E. Shifflett Sr. and Frances Mae Comer Shifflett.

He was a member of the Christian Fellowship Church in Broadway, was an avid outdoorsmen, enjoying hunting, fishing and trapping.

He worked in construction for many years as an electrician and carpenter.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Kay Delawder Shifflett; a son, James E. Emswiler of Harrisonburg; daughters, Thelma “Snicker” Robertson of McGaheysville, Pamela Shifflett of Timberville, Amanda Gainer of Grottoes and Melissa Lawson of Elkton; brothers, Lonnie Shifflett Jr., Michael Shifflett and Russell Shifflett, all of Elkton; sisters, Shelby Hensley of Elkton, Dorcas Shifflett of Stanardsville and Carolyn Shifflett of Charlottesville; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Sylvia Fulk and Lay Minister John Shifflett conducted the funeral service Monday, Jan. 4, 2016, at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.

Burial followed and was in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.

Charles L. Reedy


Charles Lewis Reedy, 88, of Harrisonburg, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015.

He was born April 10, 1927, and was a son of Staton and Mattie Jane McDonaldson Reedy.

He spent his youth at the foot of Massanutten Peak near Keezletown.

He served in the U.S. Army in France and Germany near the end of World War II.

He began working for Shenandoah’s Pride Dairy in 1947, where he delivered milk door-to-door until his retirement in 1992.

He was also an avid gardener, matchbook collector and animal lover.

He is survived by a daughter, Linda Holsinger of Harrisonburg; a granddaughter; and a great-granddaughter.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Maxine White, in 2003.

A graveside service was held Monday, Jan. 4, 2016, at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens with military rites by the Virginia Army National Guard Military Funeral Honors.

Jerrick E. Hammer


Jerrick Eldon Hammer, 18, of Elkton, passed away Jan. 2, 2016, from a tragic accident.

Jerrick was born Aug. 10, 1997, in Harrisonburg.

He is survived by his mom, Jill Campbell Downey, and husband, Scott; father, Jody Hammer, and wife, Lori; two sisters, Hailey and Molly; a stepsister, Madi; a brother, Alyias; maternal grandparents, Carol and Vernon Helmintoller and Darrell and Carol Campbell; paternal grandfather, Elmer Lee Hammer; girlfriend, Taegan Sellers; and a special cousin, Cole Hammer.

Jerrick was preceded in death by a paternal grandmother, Wilma Lee Hammer.

Jerrick was a 2015 graduate of East Rockingham High School. He had an infectious laugh and the most beautiful smile that would light up a room. He made days brighter wherever he went, always sharing a hug along the way. He was an adventurous free spirit with such a youthful innocence. His greatest love was music.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, 2016, at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton with Pastor Brad Lewis officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
