Mary M. Hammer


Mary Magdalene Lam Merica Hammer, 89, of Elkton, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2016, at her home.

She was born June 11, 1926, in Rockingham County, and was a daughter of the late Phillip and Fannie Lam.

She enjoyed gardening and canning meats and veggies.

She was a homemaker and was a member of the Naked Creek Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Harry Calvin Merica Sr. and Edward Hammer.

She is survived by daughters, Lillian (Lynn) Sions and Mary E. Merica; and a son, Lloyd F. Lam, all of Elkton; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and special caregiver, Amy Miller.

A funeral service was held Friday, Jan. 22, 2016, at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton with the Rev. Bob Silling officiating.

Burial followed at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.

Alice V. Comer


Alice Virginia Comer, 91, of Shenandoah, passed away at her home on Monday, Jan. 18, 2016.

She was born June 15, 1924, in Shenandoah, and was a daughter of the late Ada Comer.

She retired from Sentara RMH, formerly known as Rockingham Memorial Hospital, where she worked as an aide.

She was a member of Mount Lebanon Conservative Congressional Christian Church.

She is survived by a son, Roger L. “Cotton” Comer of Shenandoah.

A graveside service was held Thursday, Jan. 21, 2016, at Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Shenandoah with the Rev. James Martin officiating.

Robert C. Miller


Robert Carlton Miller, 80, of Harrisonburg, passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2016.

He was born Sep. 22, 1935, in Rockingham County, and was a son of the late Raymond Garber and Roberta Charlton Miller.

He worked at American Safety Razor in Verona and retired in 1991 after 37 years of service.

He served in the Navy Reserves and was a member of Saint James United Methodist Church in Pleasant Valley.

He enjoyed camping, boating, playing bluegrass and gospel music and riding his Harley.

On Jan. 1, 1955, he married Kaye Flory, who preceded him in death on March 17, 2000.

Surviving family include his children, Dawn L. Gochenour, Linda K. Pettit, Robert C. Miller Jr. and Ronald L. Miller; sisters, Rosa Lee Early and Janie Trobaugh; a brother, Richard Miller; four grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren.

The family will celebrate his life at a later date.

John S. Hamilton


John Stuart Hamilton, 72, of Harrisonburg, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016, at Sentara RMH Medical Center.

Mr. Hamilton was born May 18, 1943, in Ravenna, Ohio, and was a son of the late Harry Stout and Lucille Joyce (Williston) Hamilton.

He was a self-employed wood worker and was a longtime member of Ridgeway Mennonite Church.

On Feb. 21, 1984, he married the former Linda Watson, who survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two stepchildren, Jerry Wayne Conley and Jamie Ordonez; siblings, Linda Ludholtz, Sandy Fishel and Susan Hamilton, all of Mount Crawford, and Ray Hamilton of Harrisonburg; and three grandchildren.

Pastor Ben Risser will conduct a memorial service Thursday, Jan. 28, 2016, at the Ridgeway Mennonite Church at 11 a.m. The family received friends on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2016, from 6 until 8 p.m., at Ridgeway Mennonite Church.

Donald E. Bible


Donald Elwood Bible, 78, of McGaheysville, passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2016, at his home.

He was born April 15, 1937, in Linville, and was a son of the late Benjamin and May Morris Bible.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gisela Janzer Bible; and second wife, Rebecca Grace Bible.

He served in the U.S. Army for more than 20 years. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, where he was awarded multiple medals, including the Bronze Star for meritorious service, the General Douglas MacArthur Award for distinguished leadership and the Good Conduct Medal for exemplary behavior, efficiency and fidelity.

He loved nature an spent his time during retirement in the woods – fishing, hunting and chopping wood. He cleared forests for the National Forest Service.

He was a longtime member of Keezletown United Methodist Church.

He is survived by three sons, Rick Bible of McGaheysville, Frank Hartman of Pineville and Mike Hartman of Keezletown; three daughters, Donna Bible of Bridgewater, Dedra Layman of Keezletown and Julie Bible of Grottoes; one brother, Roger Bible of Bridgewater; two sisters, June Rasnick of Richmond and Jean Myers of Richmond; nine grandchildren,; and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2016, at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg with Pastor Joel Robinette officiating.

Entombment followed in the mausoleum at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.

Martin B. Hendricks


Martin Blaine Hendricks, 72, of McGaheysville, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2016, at Willow Estates in Penn Laird.

Martin was born April 27, 1943, in Martinsville, Va., and was the son of the late James C. and Mamie Carrico Hendricks.

Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by a sister, Juanita Morris, and a brother, James “Buddy” Hendricks.

Martin served two tours in Vietnam as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. After an honorable discharge from the USMC, he was employed with Norfolk and Western Railroad as a detective in Chicago.

He returned to Elkton, where he became a police officer for several years.

He then went to work with Reynolds Metals and eventually retired from Merck and Co. Inc.

He was a beloved father of three daughters, Marti Lane Hendricks-Perry and husband, Robert, of McGaheysville, Gail Shifflett and husband, Jerry, and Tina Eppard and husband, Alan, all of Elkton.

Also surviving are sisters, Betty Kite of Elkton and Doris Dean and husband, Doug, of Elkton; three grandchildren, Matthew Shifflett and wife, Ashley, Megan Shifflett and Madison Perry; two greatgrandchildren, Parker and Paxton Shifflett; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service was held Thursday, Jan. 21, 2016, at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton with Pastor Carter Dean officiating.

Burial followed at Mount Olivet Cemetery with military rites by the American Legion Post 29.

A. Regina Reilly


Aileen “Regina” Reilly, 100, of Harrisonburg, passed away Jan. 19, 2016, at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born, in Harrisonburg, on Aug. 30, 1915, and was a daughter of the late William Charles and Margaret Sheehy Reilly.

She graduated from Harrisonburg High School and lived her entire life in the Harrisonburg area.

She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, sang in the choir, and participated in the Young at Heart, Council of Catholic Women.

She was a secretary at the State Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service and retired in 1970.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Honoring her request, she was cremated and the family received friends 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2016, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

A memorial service followed at 11 a.m. with Father Silvio Kaberia officiating. Burial will be at Woodbine Cemetery.

Virginia M. Fox


Virginia M. “Ginny” Fox, 85, of Harrisonburg, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016.

She was born Dec. 7, 1930, in Chicago, Ill., and was a daughter of the late James Martin and Virginia Smith Martin.

In 1973, she and her husband moved to the Shenandoah Valley to raise a family.

She became a member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and was active in the church and also volunteered at Sentara RMH.

On July 7, 1951, she married Paul M. Fox, who survives.

She is also survived by her children, Paul Fox and Kathy Lam; five grandchildren; and three great- grandchildren.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, 2016, at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Harrisonburg.

The Mass will be conducted by Father Silvio Kaberia.

Interment and additional services will be held in Des Plaines, Ill.

Brian R. Foltz


Brian Ray Foltz, 41, of Stanley, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016, in Stanley.

Visitation was at Calvary Independent Brethren Church on Monday, Jan. 25, 2016.

The service was also held at the Calvary Independent Brethren Church on Monday, Jan. 25, 2016.

Burial was at the Calvary Independent Brethren Cemetery in Stanley.

Arrangements were by Bradley Funeral Home in Luray.



Clarence E. Shifflett


Clarence Edward Shifflett, 69, of Elkton, passed away at Sentara RMH Medical Center on Nov. 27, 2015.

He was born Nov. 19, 1946, to the late George and Nina Shifflett.

Clarence served a term the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Conflict and worked for more than 30 years as a mechanical supervisor at U.Va. before his retirement.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Catherine Fitzgerald, and his son, Scott Shifflett.

He is survived by his sister, Patricia Shifflett; two nieces; and one nephew.

The family would like to thank the Harrisonburg Health and Rehab Center, Sentara and Devita Dialysis Center for their support during his illness.
