Neil S. Hensley


Neil Samuel Hensley, 62, of Elkton, passed away June 4, 2016, in Harrisonburg.

He was born May 27, 1954, in Harrisonburg, and was a son of the late Osba Earl and Ruth Louise Shifflett Hensley.

On Dec. 31, 1984, he married Frances “Sissy” Merica Hensley, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Joshua N. Hensley of Nashville, Tenn.; daughters, Andrea H. Hensley of Elkton and Miranda Crowley of Shenandoah; brothers, Jessie Hensley of Shenandoah and Paul Hensley of Elkton; a sister, Betty Mae Hensley of Elkton; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He attended Elkton High School through the eighth grade. At 16, he went to Northern Virginia to work. By 18, he was running his own crew and, by his early 20s, he had started his own company, Neil Hensley Carpentry Contractors.

He worked in Northern Virginia and locally. He built timeshares for Massanutten Resort for many years before retiring from construction in 2007.

He loved drag racing and was a member of the Southern Outlaw Top Sportsman. He enjoyed old car shows and cruise-ins. He and his wife owned and operated Old Pine Farm in Shenandoah, where they raise pure bread Angus cattle and he was a member of the Virginia Angus Association.

His greatest joy in life was his family especially his grandchildren.

The Rev. Rick Robertson and John Crawford will conduct the funeral service at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 9, 2016, at the Kyger Funeral Home chapel in Elkton. Burial will follow in the Elk Run Cemetery.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.

Barbara A. Simmons


Barbara Ann Simmons, 71, of McGaheysville, passed away at her home on Thursday, June 2, 2016. She had been ill since 1990.

She was born April 30, 1945, in Tazewell, Va., and was a daughter of the late Ralph and Eloise Rose Yates.

She received her real estate license from Gaston College in North Carolina and managed the American Real Estate Company in Myrtle Beach, S.C. She was employed as a Realtor for much of her life. She was a member of the Sanctuary Church in Branson, Mo.

She enjoyed going to the beach and traveling.

On Nov. 25, 1980, she married Edwin W. Simmons, who survives.

She is also survived by a son, Steven Hendricks; a stepson, Travis Knight; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral service was held Sunday, June 5, 2016, at Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg with Pastor Stacy Meyerhoeffer officiating.

Burial was at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Vicki L. Cave


Vicki Lee Cave, 65, of Harrisonburg, passed away June 4, 2016, in her home.

She was born Jan. 30, 1951, and was the daughter of the late Lawrence T. Dove and Doris M. Dove, who survives.

She was a lifetime resident of the Valley and graduated from Broadway High School in 1969. She was also an avid member of the West Side Baptist Church in Harrisonburg.

On June 29, 2003, she married David R. Cave, who survives.

Also surviving is a son, Ronald L. Nutter Jr.; stepdaughters, Teresa Macaluso of Weirton, W.Va. and Melissa Long of McGaheysville; brothers, Randy R. Dove of Harrisonburg and Larry T. Dove of Staton Island, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg officiated by Pastor Troy Pearson.

A family interment followed at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends Tuesday, June 7, 2016, at the funeral home.

Donald L. Hensley


Donald Lewis Hensley, 64, of McGaheysville, died Sunday, May 29, 2016, at his home.

Born in Rockingham County on March 2, 1952, he was a son of the late Leo David Hensley and Agnes Lam Hensley.

He was employed for Ray Carr Tires for many years and also with Great Eastern Management.

He is survived by a daughter, Angela Hensley; two sisters, Merry Merica and Sylvia Hensley; three brothers, Dennis Hensley, Robert Hensley and Noland Hensley; a half brother, Larry Sampson; and two grandsons.

The memorial service was private and interment was in the Eppard & Lam Cemetery in Elkton.

The family received friends June 4, at the Monger Shelter in Elkton for a potluck dinner.



Roseanne L. Skinner


Roseanne Lynette Skinner, 34, of Grottoes, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 31, 2016.

She was born July 1, 1981, in Rockingham County, and was the daughter of Henry “Eddie” and Jacklyn Skinner.

She graduated from Broadway High School in 2000 and attend James Madison University, from which she graduated summa cum laude and received a bachelor’s degree in graphic design and fine arts.

She worked as a graphic designer for Eddie Edwards Signs and also worked as a rural route carrier out of the Grottoes Post Office.

She was active in a local ministry program, At The Well, and also participating routinely for “GOT” Goals Oriented Training program at Gold’s Gym in Harrisonburg and the Carter Hays “Unleash the Champion” in Franklin, Tenn.

She was multi-talented musically and artistically, playing various instruments. She loved to travel and had an adventurous spirit.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her brothers, Tim Skinner and Dansby Skinner; companion, Corey Oliver; and a maternal grandmother, Rosie Hensley.

A funeral service was held Saturday, June 4, 2016, at the Kyger Funeral Home chapel in Harrisonburg.

Burial followed the funeral and was at Mount Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor her by doing something kind for a neighbor or a friend in an anonymous and God-honoring way.

Shelby J. Lowery


Shelby J. Lowery, 65, of Henrietta, N.C. and formerly of Shenandoah, passed away Thursday, May 26, 2016, at the Hospice House of Rutherford County.

Born Oct. 26, 1950, in Luray, she was a daughter to the late Julius Rosser and Iva Bradley Rosser.

She worked as a substitute teacher in the public schools and as an inspector for the Craddock & Terry Shoe Co. for several years.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed collecting dolls and ceramics.

She was a member of the Saint Peters United Methodist Church of Shenandoah.

Survivors include her husband of 31 years, Roger “Charlie” Lowery; two sons, Bobby Hudgins of Arvonia, Va. and Kenneth Hudgins of Henrietta; two brothers, Doug Rosser of Shenandoah and Tim Rosser of Luray; and three grandchildren.

Services were held May 28, 2016, by Harrelson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Johnny McCarty offi ciating.



Humie J. Kite


Humie Junior Kite, 75, of Broadway, died Friday, June 3, 2016, in Broadway.

Services were held at the Lighthouse Tabernacle in New Market on Tuesday, June 7, 2016.

Burial was at St. Luke Cemetery at Alma in Stanley.

Services were performed under the direction of Bradley Funeral Home.



Ruth C. Pence


Ruth C. Pence, 85, of Elkton, passed away May 31, 2016, at her home.

She was born June 7, 1930, in Rockingham County, and was a daughter of the late Robert Lee and Georgianna Lawson Crawford.

She worked at the Grottoes Knitting Mill, Alliance in Shenandoah and was the manager at the Dollar General Store for many years.

She was a former member of Saint Stephen’s Church in Berrytown in her youth and attended Lighthouse Tabernacle in Elkton.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed crocheting.

On Aug. 3, 1956, Ruth married Clyde Norman Pence Sr., who survives.

She is also survived by a daughter, Barbara Bailey of Elkton; a son, Rusty Pence of Gallatin, Tenn.; five grandchildren; and two sisters, Lillie Hawkins of Elkton and Joyce Potter of Raceland, Ky.

A funeral service was held Saturday, June 4, 2016, at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton with Pastor James Kite officiating.

Interment followed at Elk Run Cemetery.

Friends may visit the home at any time.

Wilda G. Croy


Wilda Grim Croy, 85, of Timberville, passed away on June 1, 2016.

She was born March 7, 1931, in Singers Glen, and was a daughter of the late Joseph Daniel and Bessie Ritchie Grim.

She graduated from Linville-Edom High School. She was a bookkeeper with Valley Implements for 31 years before retiring. She had previously attended Ray of Hope Church.

On April 11, 1953, she married Lewis Sidney Croy, who preceded her in death on June 3, 2001.

She is survived by a daughter, Linda C. Conn of Grottoes; eight grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; brothers, Charles Grim of Singers Glen and Harold Grim of Bridgewater; and sisters, Betty Allen of Weyers Cave and Lois Robertson of Martinsville, Ind.

A funeral service was held Friday, June 3, 2016, at Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg with Pastor Jim Kite officiating. Burial was at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.

Mary L. Blose


Mary Lou Blose, 80, of Elkton, passed away Tuesday, May 31, 2016, at her son’s home in Crossville, Tenn.

She was born April 16, 1936, in Pulaski, and was a daughter of the late Julius and Edith Hufford.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Harold E. Blose, who passed away on June 9, 2012.

She is survived by her family, church family and many friends.

A funeral service was held Friday, June 3, 2016, at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. Pastors Bob and Carrie Talbott and Pastor Rick Robertson officiated.

Burial followed at Elk Run Cemetery.
