Tony A. Alger


Tony Ashton Alger, 63, of Palmyra, died on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2015.

He was born on Dec. 10, 1952, in New Market and was a son of the late Jacob Eugene “Gene” Alger and Luella Catherine Cullers Alger.

On March 3, 2006, he married Marie Frances Buracker Alger, who survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Betsy Diane Lloyd of Scottsville; two sons, Anthony James and Jason Lee Alger, both of Luray; three brothers, Gary “Joe” and Steve G. Alger, both of Luray, and Ricky L. Alger of Rileyville; a sister, Debra C. Clamon of Rileyville; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was conducted on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016, at the Bradley Funeral Home by Pastor Thomas H. Robinson. Burial was in the Mount Zion Cemetery in Luray.



Robert P. Zirkle Sr.


Robert Page Zirkle Sr., 93, of Shenandoah, died on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015, at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born on Feb. 28, 1922, in Page County and was a son of the late Clyde E. Zirkle and Blanche Strickler Zirkle.

Mr. Zirkle was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II in Egypt. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service, where he worked as a clerk for more than 37 years.

His wife of 58 years, Louise C. Dofflemyer Zirkle, preceded him in death.

He is survived by two sons, Robert Page Zirkle Jr. of Shenandoah, and J. Keith Zirkle of Newark, Del.; one sister, Ruth Righter; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by four siblings.

A graveside service was conducted on Monday, Jan. 4, 2016, at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens by Pastor Phyllis Diamond.

Dorothy N. Berry


Dorothy Nora Berry, 97, of Stanley, died on Friday, Jan. 1, 2016, at MontVue Nursing Home.

She was born on Feb. 22, 1918, in Pound and was a daughter of the late John Wesley Cox and Dallas Blevins Cox.

Mrs. Berry had worked for Prince William County as a custodian.

Her husband, Burlie Berry, died on March 6, 1971.

She is survived by a daughter, Carol Emogene Phipps of Stanley; two sons, Raymond Buford Berry of Manassas, and Ernest Cox of Max Meadows; a stepdaughter, Elsie Sheppard of Christiansburg; a sister, Jeanette Akers of Christiansburg; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 35 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Nannie Horton and Madeline Akers; and three brothers, Thomas, Donald and John Cox Jr.

A funeral service was conducted on Tuesday, Jan. 5, at the Fellowship Baptist Church by the Rev. Don Sherfey. Burial was held on Wednesday, Jan. 6, at Stonewall Memory Gardens in Gainesville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fellowship Baptist Church in Stanley.



Wayne E. Campbell


Wayne Edward Campbell, 78, of Shenandoah, died on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2015, at his home.

He was born on Jan. 18, 1937, and was a son of the late Ervy Lee Campbell and Martha Virginia Higgs Campbell.

Mr. Campbell was a bricklayer and worked for Charlie’s Backhoe Service for many years before retiring.

His wife, Charlene Breeden Campbell, preceded him in death.

He is survived by a daughter, Darlene Sawyer; two stepsons, Dale and James Courtney; two stepdaughters, Anna Housden and Debbie Knot; two brothers, Roy and Donnie Campbell; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter “Cookie” Campbell; a stepdaughter, Wanda Henderson Good; and one great-great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mary H. Craig


Mary Harlow Craig, 80, of Shenandoah, died on Friday, Jan. 1, 2016, at her home.

She was born on Aug. 19, 1935, in Mount Solon and was a daughter of the late Lucien H. Harlow and Stella Talmedge Milstead Harlow.

Mrs. Craig was a member of the Grove Hill United Methodist Church. She worked at Marvel Poultry Plant for 42 years from 1955-1998.

On April 8, 1956, she married Leonard Craig, who survives.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three sons, Dwight and David Craig, both of Shenandoah, and Jeffrey Craig of Sugar Grove, W.Va.; a daughter, Kathy Hostetter of Elkton; one sister, Peggy Huffer of Mount Solon; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by siblings Patsy Shull, Margaret Carter, Catherine Cline, Ruth Scott, Shirley Cassidy, Betty May, Norma Grim, Robert Harlow, Gus Milstead and Doc Milstead; a grandson and a great-granddaughter.

A funeral service was conducted on Tuesday, Jan. 5, at the Grove Hill United Methodist Church by the Rev. Ellen Martin. Burial was in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Linda B. Banks


Linda Bonita Banks, 53, of Stanley, died on Saturday, Dec. 26, 2015.

She was born on July 13, 1962, in Baltimore, Md., and was a daughter of David Dujardin of Stanley and Patricia Feigley Wise.

Her husband, Grant Banks, died on March 4, 2007.

Surviving in addition to her parents are a son, Michael Banks of Stanley; a brother, Roger Dujardin of Maryland; a sister, Terry; and three grandchildren.

Services are planned for a later date.



Alger clarification


Albert William Alger, who died on Monday, Dec. 28, 2015, was buried in the Ike Alger Family Cemetery. Services were conducted by the Rev. Eric Croft.



Orea M. Corbin


Orea Mitchell Corbin, 75, of 350 Dovel Hollow Rd., Stanley, died on Monday, Jan. 4, 2016, at the Life Care Center of New Market.

He was born on March 7, 1940, in Rock Mills and was a son of the late Orie Amon Corbin and Grace Pearl Whorton Corbin.

On March 16, 1963, he married Peggy Good Corbin, who survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Brad Matthew Corbin of Westmoreland, Tenn., and Josh Amon Corbin of Stanley; three brothers, Edward and Rolley Corbin, both of Manassas, and Garfield Corbin of Culpeper; two sisters, Pearl Corbin of Manassas, and Dolly Thorpe of The Plains; and three grandchildren, Barrett Corbin of Okmulgee, Okla., and Jacob David Corbin and Laney Corbin, both of Stanley. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lilly Corbin and Ressie Cain; and two brothers, Wade and David Corbin.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 7, at the Calvary Independent Brethren Church by the Rev. Charles R. Turner. Burial will be in the Mount Zion Cemetery in Luray.

The family was to receive friends from 7-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 6, at the Calvary Independent Brethren Church. (Paid Obituary)



Carl G. Duerr Sr.


Carl G. Duerr Sr., 78, of Luray, Va., died quietly at home after a long illness. He was surrounded by family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gustav and Beatrice Duerr; two brothers, Colby and William Duerr; and one sister, Evelyn Thornley.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Duerr of Luray, Va.; one son, Carl Duerr Jr. and wife Pearl of Dover, Del.; two daughters, Beth Marie Duerr of Dover, Del., and Cindy Lynn Hahn and husband Bubba of Luray, Va. He has one surviving brother, Augustus Duerr and wife Laura of Florida. He also is survived by eight grandchildren, Jason McPherson and wife Chelsea of Dover, Del.; Robert Jones Jr. and wife Heather of Dover, Del., Britney Jones of Dover, Del., Christopher Duerr and wife Sandy of Wilmington, Del., Brian Duerr and wife Veronica of Harrington, Del., Stephen Duerr and spouse Mike Castura of Newark, Del., Jon Duerr and partner Hank Robinson of Claymont, Del., and Amy Lane of Felton, Del.; as well as five great-granddaughters, Arianna and Abagale Jones, both of Dover, Del., Kayla and Melody Dennis, also of Dover, Del., and Aubrey Duerr of Harrington, Del. He is also survived by his granddog, Gracie of Luray, Va.; and several well-loved nieces and nephews.

He was born July 17, 1937, in Wyoming, Del. He was the fifth child of the late Gus and Bea Duerr. Carl graduated from Caesar Rodney High School in 1956.

He married his wife, Nancy of 57 years, in 1958.

Carl retired from Reichhold Chemicals in 2001 after 37 years. A devoted family man, he enjoyed travel, classic cars, bluegrass music and was a lifelong Philadelphia Eagles fan.

The family received friends for a celebration of life in honor of Carl at Mok-n-She’s Restaurant in Luray on Sunday, Dec. 27, between 1-3 p.m.

Richard B. Ahern


Richard Berry Ahern, 54, of 321 Honeyville Ave., Stanley, died on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016, at Page Memorial Hospital with his family at his side.

He was born on Feb. 11, 1961, in Philadelphia, Pa., and was a son of Roy Berry Jr. of Stanley and the late Leona A. Berry.

Mr. Ahern was employed for DuPont in Wilmington, Del., as a manager.

Surviving in addition to his father are Una Murphy of Stanley (father’s companion); husband, Kevin Ahern of Stanley; two brothers, Roy Walter Berry of Frederick, Md., and Douglas Berry of Pottstown, Pa.; three sisters, Virginia Hydock of Abington, Pa., Barbara Woodhams of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Alicia Berry of Upper Darby, Pa.; and two stepsons, Brandon Miller of Harrisonburg, and Chauncey Dinges of Stanley.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9, at the Bradley Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday one hour prior to the service, from 1-2 p.m. (Paid Obituary)



Charlotte A. Lee


Charlotte Aleshire Lee, 94, of Laurinburg, N.C., passed away peacefully and with compassionate care on December 31, 2015, at Morrison Manor.

She was born May 10, 1921, in Stanley, Virginia.

She is survived by one son, Larry Wesley (Marie) Lee of McColl, S.C.; one sister, Marie Aleshire DeCline of Owings, Maryland; five grandchildren, Anna Lee Chewning (Clark) of Easley, S.C., Katie Lee Clark (Will) of Shelby, N.C., Adam H. Lee (Pamela) of San Antonio, Texas, Deana Lee McHugh (Kevin) of Florence, S.C., and Dawn Lee Seals (Kale) of Bennettsville, S.C.; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles H. Lee; her parents, the Rev. John Wesley and Etta Aleshire; two sisters, Lillian A. Couch and Hazel Aleshire; and one brother, Haskel Aleshire.

Charlotte was a member of the First Christian Church in Arlington, Va., and was a long time employee of GEICO serving as an accountant.

A private family graveside service was held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 3, 2016, at the Leaksville United Church of Christ in Luray, Virginia.
