William H. Huffman


William Harold “Dee” Huffman, 88, of Shenandoah, died on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2016.

He was born on Dec. 31, 1927, in Shenandoah and was a son of the late Glenn Benjamin Huffman and Margaret Duncan Huffman.

Mr. Huffman was an Army veteran. He began his career with the Norfolk and Western Railroad as a call boy and retired after 44 years of service as a dispatcher and clerk.

On Nov. 5, 1948, he married Julia Templon Huffman, who survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, David and Andy Huffman, both of Shenandoah, and James “Glenny” Huffman of Grottoes; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Lester Huffman; and a sister, Rachel Neblett.

A graveside service was conducted on Monday Jan. 18, at East Lawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg by Larry Sullivan.

Edward F. Duncan


Edward Floyd Duncan, 71, of Front Royal, died on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2016.

He was born on Nov. 1, 1944, in Shenandoah and was a son of the late Richard Henry Duncan Sr. and Charlotte Eleanor Comer Duncan.

Mr. Duncan worked for Avtex as a mechanical engineer for 43 years.

On March 6, 1968, he married Sharon K. Bailey Duncan, who survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Sheila Renee Perdue of Front Royal; a son, Timothy Edward Duncan of Front Royal; two brothers, Richard H. Duncan Jr. of Luray, and James C. Duncan of Winchester; two sisters, Annie C. Lucas and Dottie Higgs, both of Shenandoah; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was conducted on Sunday, Jan. 17, at the Bradley Funeral Home by the Rev. Erich Bennett. Burial was in the Beahm’s Chapel Cemetery.



Lee A. Dofflemyer


Lee Anthony Dofflemyer, 53, of Elkton, died on Monday, Jan. 11, 2016, at his home.

He was born on March 15, 1962, in Harrisonburg and was a son of Larry Dofflemyer and the late Jane Dofflemyer.

Mr. Dofflemyer was a graduate of Page County High School, where he was active in sports. He was an avid animal lover.

On Dec. 25, 1998, he married Leeanne Shenk Dofflemyer, who survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Jacob Lee Dofflemyer; three brothers, Skip, Ray and Scott Dofflemyer; and numerous nephews.

A funeral service was conducted on Friday, Jan. 15, at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton by Evangelist Doug Gochenour. Burial was in the Dovel Cemetery.

Arbutus M. Frazier


Arbutus Marie Lam Frazier, 90, of Elkton, died on Thursday, Jan. 14, 2016.

She was born on Sept. 12, 1925, in Rockingham County and was a daughter of the late William Oliver Lam and Laura Belle May Lam.



Mrs. Frazier worked at Duplant and Crompton for a number of years and was a caregiver. She attended Mount Zion United Methodist Church in her youth.

Her husbands, Charles E. Frazier and Clarence C. Raynes, preceded her in death.

She is survived by two daughters, Darlene Campbell of Grottoes, and Peggy Breeden of Elkton; a brother, Weldon E. Lam of Shenandoah; a sister, Charlotte Lam Stover of Shenandoah; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; and two step great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sons, Owen Frazier, and twins Gary and Larry Frazier; a daughter, Jean E. Frazier; a grandson; two granddaughters; and six siblings.

A memorial service was conducted on Monday, Jan. 18, at St. Stephens and the Good Shepherd Church. Burial was private.



Judy A. Dove


Judy Ann Dove, 67, of Luray, died on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016.

She was born on Feb. 27, 1948, in Jerome and was a daughter of Gwendolyn “Barb” Miller of Basye and the late Norman Miller Sr.

Mrs. Dove worked for Emco door company for 10 years.

Her husband, Beverly W. Dove, died on Feb. 8, 1974.

Surviving in addition to her mother are a son, Bradley Dove of Stanley; a daughter, Yvonne Buracker of Stanley; three brothers, Brian, John W. and Norman Miller Jr., all of Basye, three sisters, Diane Dellinger and Patricia Miller, both of Basye, and Wanda Layman of West Virginia; two step daughters, Mindy Richards of Shenandoah, and Charlotte Price of Stanley; eight grandchildren; and her companion, Kenneth F. Price of Luray.

A memorial service will be conducted at a later date.



Alice V. Comer




Alice Virginia Comer, 91, of Shenandoah, died on Monday, Jan. 18, 2016, at her home.

She was born on June 15, 1924, in Shenandoah and was a daughter of the late Ada Comer.

Ms. Comer retired from Sentara-RMH, formerly known as Rockingham Memorial Hospital, where she worked as an aide. She was a member of Mt. Lebanon Conservative Congressional Christian Church.

She is survived by a son, Roger L. “Cotton” Comer of Shenandoah. She was preceded in death by a brother, James Comer; and a sister, Nance Whiteside.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21, at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery by the Rev. James Martin.



Brett Lam


Brett “Mavrik” Lam, of Elkton, died on Sunday, Jan. 10, 2016.

He is the son of David Delaine Lam of Elkton and the late Elizabeth Stroop.

Surviving in addition to his father and his wife, Beverly F. Lam, are a daughter, Faith Lam of Elkton; a stepson, Andrew Thomas of Grottoes; a brother, Tony Lam of Elkton; four sisters, Sherry Cook of Luray, Dawn Lam of Elkton, Melissa Lam of Hyattsville, Md., and Jamie Stroop of Hot Springs; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was conducted on Saturday, Jan. 16, at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.



Ruth E. Spitler


Ruth Elizabeth Spitler, 88, of 8 Eden Rd., Luray, died on Friday, Jan. 15, 2016, at Page Memorial Hospital.

She was born on July 16, 1927, in Luray and was a daughter of the late Luther Vernon Ellis and Minnie Catherine Griffith Ellis.

Mrs. Spitler owned and operated Fairview Grocery for 50 years. She was a member of the Beth Eden Lutheran Church.

On June 27, 1959, she married Landon W. Spitler, who died on Oct. 31, 1998.

She is survived by a daughter, Martha Fleming and husband Dennis of Luray; a granddaughter, Katie Fleming of Luray; and a grandson, Bryan Fleming and Michael Orr of Denver, Colo. She was preceded in death by a brother, Vernon Ellis; and a sister, Irene Catherine Huffman.

A funeral service was conducted on Monday, Jan. 18, at the Beth Eden Lutheran Church by Alexander C. Zuber. A graveside service was held Tuesday, Jan. 19, at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Luray.

Lydia F. Atkins


Lydia Frances “Chubby” Atkins, 92, of 72 Reservoir Ave., Luray, died on Monday, Jan. 18, 2016.

She was born on April 7, 1923, in Luray and was a daughter of the late Raymond Clem and Beulah Rhoda Compton Clem.

Mrs. Atkins owned and operated the Sears and Roebuck store in Luray for 25 years. She was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church and the Edith Rebekah Lodge 93.

On Sept. 6, 1943, she married Gayland Earskine Atkins, who died on March 10, 1994.

She is survived by two daughters, Judy Atkins Price of Luray, and Gay Atkins Yowell of Stephens City; four grandchildren, Heather Bailey and husband Tim, and Holly Rudolph and husband Rudy, all of Winchester, Hudson Price of Stanley, and Miller Price II of Luray; three great-grandchildren, Ross Bailey, Parker Price and Kaleb Smith; three step grandchildren, Bryan Price of Gloucester, Jonathan Price of Mount Crawford, and Jessica Cooper of Oakton; and five step great-grandchildren, Maren Cooper, Jack Cooper, Samuel Cooper, Rileigh Ann Price and Shepard Price. She was preceded in death by a sister, Lorraine Rozelia Umbel.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21, at St. Mark Lutheran Church by the Rev. R. Nicholas Eichelberger. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Luray.

The family was to receive friends from 6-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20, at the Bradley Funeral Home.

Lorraine V. Fike


Lorraine Virginia Texiere Fike, 95, died peacefully on January 16, 2016, at the Bridgewater Home in Bridgewater, Virginia.

Lorraine is survived by two children, Judith Fike Riley (Frank) of Luray, Va.; Michael Fike (Cindy) of Bridgewater Va.; daughter-in-law Lisa Fike of Greensburg, Pa.; grandchildren Chris Riley of Luray, Va., Lori Riley Maxfield (Stefan) of Seattle, Wash., Shannon Fike (Loretta Rose) of Petersburg, W.Va., Carol Fike of DeKalb, Ind., and Bethany Fike of Greensburg, Pa.; great-grandchild Liam Maxfield of Seattle, Wash.; and siblings, Lowell Texiere of Bridgewater, and H.G. Texiere of Harrisonburg, Va. She was preceded in death by husband Galen Ezra Fike, son Melvin Fike, daughter Alice Maye Fike, and sister Rosemary Seese.

Lorraine was born November 8, 1920, in Port Chester, New York, to Jacob William and Mattie Alice Miller Texiere.

She graduated from Harrisonburg High School (Va.) and Bridgewater College (Va.) and attended Bethany Theological Seminary (Ill.).

She married Galen in 1944. Settling in Eglon, W.Va., they operated the post office and the family’s general store. After raising their family, they moved to the Bridgewater Retirement Village in 1988.

Lorraine devoted much of her life to church activities. A lifelong member of the Church of the Brethren, she served in many capacities, most notably as a minister’s wife, Sunday School teacher and deacon.

A graveside service for family and friends, officiated by Mark Teets, will be held on January 21 at 1 p.m. at the Eglon Cemetery (W.Va.). A memorial service at the Bridgewater (Va.) Church of the Brethren will be scheduled at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to honor Lorraine may be sent to the Bridgewater Home Auxiliary at 302 North Second Street, Bridgewater, Va. 22812.
