Calvin E. Hansbrough Jr.

Calvin Eugene “Gene” Hansbrough Jr., 65, of Shenandoah, died on Monday, April 3, 2017, at his home.

He was born on April 17, 1951, in Harrisonburg and was a son of the late Calvin Eugene Hansbrough and Betty Ann Foote Hansbrough.

Mr. Hansbrough was a project engineer/quality control manager for Jacobs Contracting, LLC, in North Carolina and was a member of the Shenandoah Moose Lodge.

He is survived by his companion of nearly 20 years, Goldie M. Hensley.

 He was preceded in death by a sister, Beverly Ann Hansbrough Good.

A celebration of life service was conducted on Saturday, April 8, at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to a charity of choice.

Paul W. Emory

Paul Wesley Emory, 66, of Luray, died on Sunday, March 26, 2017, at MontVue Nursing Home.

Mr. Emory was born on Nov. 18, 1950, in Washington, D.C., and was a son of the late Vaiden Emory and Bertha Mae Heck Emory.

He is survived by a sister, Claire Emory of Arlington.

Ethel E. Sweezy

Ethel Emma Sweezy, 88, of 300 Williams Ave., Shenandoah, died on Monday, April 10, 2017, at Timberview Crossing Assisted Living in Timberville.

She was born on May 28, 1928, in Freeport, N.Y., and was a daughter of the late Phillip Joseph Mascot and Ethel Marie Wright Mascot.

Mrs. Sweezy was a member of the Church of the Valley.

On Aug. 6, 1944, she married David Leo Sweezy, who died on Jan. 15, 2007.

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Fellows of Luray; one grandson, Michael Taylor of Shenandoah; and three great-grandchildren, Jay Fittry of Singers Glen, Sierra Fittry of Broadway, and Alexei Fittry of Shenandoah. She was preceded in death by a son, David Joseph Sweezy; two sisters, Eva Marie Ramo and Virginia Smith; and one brother, Alfred Mascot.

Vanessa R. Cubbage 

Vanessa Renee Cubbage, 26, of Luray, died on Thursday, April 6, 2017, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

She was born on June 26, 1990, in Charlottesville and was a daughter of Roger Lee Cubbage of Stanley and Lois Ann Stoneberger Tharpe of Luray.

Surviving in addition to her parents are two sisters, Amanda Stoneberger of Luray, and Brittany Campbell of Stanley; and a brother, Brandon Buracker of Stanley.

A funeral service was conducted on Tuesday, April 11, at the New Life Gospel Church by the Rev. Tony Cubbage. Burial was in the McCoy Family Cemetery in Stanley.

Guy L. Louderback

Guy L. Louderback, 74, of Luray, died on Saturday, April 1, 2017, at Winchester Medical Center.

He was born on July 9, 1942, in Rockingham County and was a son of the late Guy L. Louderback Sr. and Treva Comer Louderback.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Loretta Kibler Louderback, are a son, Guy L. Louderback III; a daughter, Edwina Tanzi; and two sisters, Martha Vaughn and Mary Ellen Atwood. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Louderback.

Private services are planned, with arrangements handled by Jones Funeral Home in Winchester.

Portia G. Roberts

Portia G. Roberts, 66, of Luray, passed away on Saturday, April 8, 2017, in her home with her son and daughter by her side.

Services will be at a later date.

Mrs. Roberts was born on December 1, 1950, in Washington, D.C., daughter of the late Howard “Cotton” Goodman and June Victoria Edwards Goodman.

Surviving are a son, Richard Roberts, and his wife, Elizabeth, of Luray; four brothers, Jesse Goodman, Pat Goodman, Tom Goodman, and Mike Goodman, all of Virginia; two sisters, Patricia Munn of Michigan, and Julia Doll of Virginia; four grandchildren, Sarah, Joshua, Kyson and Zoe; two great-grandchildren, Peyton and Killian; her faithful dog, Winter; and numerous other family members.

William A. Miller

William Amos Miller, 80, of Luray, died on Sunday, April 9, 2017.

Mr. Miller was born on Dec. 13, 1936, in Luray and was a son of the late Clarence Lee Miller and Jennie Bertha Printz Miller.

He is survived by three sisters, Sally M. Ettare of Stanley, and Catherine Annie Miller and Florence Bertha Miller, both of Luray; and a brother, George Freeman Miller of Luray. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Sarah Jane Smith and Viola Pearl Good; and a brother, Kirby Miller.

A graveside service was conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 12, at the Mount Zion Cemetery in Luray by Pastor Pete Campbell.
