Mae I. Biller


Mae Irene Biller, 87, of Luray, died on Saturday, June 10, 2017.

She was born on Jan. 29, 1930, in Virginia and was a daughter of the late William Zachariah Smith and Eva Virginia Seekford Smith.

Mrs. Biller was a member of the White Hill Church of the Brethren and the Newport Christian Church.

On Nov. 1, 1947, she married Emmett Randolph Higgs, who died on April 21, 1982. On March 2, 1984, she married Raymond Edward Biller, who died on Nov. 15, 2015.

She is survived by three sons, William Randolph, Thomas Edward and Scott Craig Higgs, all of Luray; two daughters, Wanda Jean Foster of Harrisonburg, and Gail Denise Rhinehart of Luray; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Walter Ashby, George William, Kenneth Paul, Roy Dale and Bobby Allen Smith; four sisters, Betty Lou Stillwell, Shirley Virginia Triggs, Nancy Lee Pettit and Frances Elizabeth Painter; and one grandchild.

A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 14, at the Bradley Funeral Home by Pastor Dave Chappel. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Luray.

The family received friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 1-2 p.m.

Ruby A. Nicholson


Ruby Ann Nicholson, 76, of Shenandoah, died on Saturday, June 10, 2017, at Sentara RMH Medical Center.

She was born on April 14, 1941, in Page County and was a daughter of the late Hulbert and Ethel Jewell.

Mrs. Nicholson was a hairdresser. She owned her own business in Elkton for 25 years and later worked at the Hair Cuttery in Harrisonburg until retiring in 2014. She attended the Shenandoah Pentecostal Holiness Church and played the piano for several groups in the Elkton area.

On Aug. 15, 1996, she married Frank Nicholson, who survives.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Donna Cave; three sons, Craig, Allen and Will Nicholson; one brother, Donnie Jewell; two sisters, Bonnie Robichaud and Sandy Kite; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Mark T. Jewell, Wayne Blosser and Denver Blosser.

A celebration of life service was conducted on Tuesday, June 13, at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton by Pastor Jimmy Kite. Burial was private at the Newport Christian Church Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the building fund at the Shenandoah Pentecostal Holiness Church.



Roy H. Morris


Roy Howard Morris, 83, of Shenandoah, died on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at Life Care Center of New Market.

He was born on Oct. 30, 1933, and was a son of the late Welty Morris and Hettie Williams Morris.

Mr. Morris was a veteran of the United States Army, earning the rank of corporal. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for A.B. Torrence Construction Co. and Stone and Webster Construction before retiring. He was an avid fisherman and hunter.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 50 years, Mabel Jean Jones Morris, are a daughter, Tammy Yager of Shenandoah; two sons, Eddie Morris of Stanley, and Randy Morris of Shenandoah; a stepdaughter, Linda Short of Shenandoah; a sister, Shirley Shifflett of Elkton; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Millard, Amos, Raymond, Ray and Herman; and two sisters, Virginia Rosson and Mary Sanders.

The family received friends on Thursday, June 8, at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. A private burial was held at Elk Run Cemetery.

Dorothy O. Vreeland


Dorothy Olinda Vreeland, 85, of Luray, died on Friday, June 9, 2017, at Sentara RMH Medical Center.

She was born on June 27, 1931, in New York and was a daughter of the late Christian VanDeurs and Jenny Magnason VanDeurs.

Mrs. Vreeland was a member of the Rileyville Baptist Church and had volunteered at Page One, Salvation Army and the Page Pregnancy Center.

On Dec. 27, 1950, she married William Jones “Bill” Vreeland III, who survives.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Kent Vreeland of Aurora, Colo., and William Jones Vreeland IV of Long Island City, N.Y.; a daughter, Olinda G. Vreeland of Patchogue, N.Y.; a sister, Grace Crowe of Virginia; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Noelle Vreeland Lam; and a brother, Ralph VanDeurs.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 15, at the Bradley Funeral Home by the Rev. Dan Ellis. Burial will be in the Beahm’s Chapel Cemetery in Luray.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rileyville Baptist Church Building Fund.



Julia A. Dinges


Julia Annette Dinges, 55, of Stanley, died on Saturday, June 10, 2017.

She was born on Aug. 14, 1961, in Luray and was a daughter of the late Ray Owen Gray and Jean Elizabeth Housden Gray.

Mrs. Dinges worked at Page Memorial Hospital in the medical transcription department for 35 years. She was a member of the Stanley United Methodist Church.

On June 25, 1994, she married Jeffery Allen Dinges, who survives.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Kristen Elizabeth Jane Dinges of Stanley; and a sister, Karen Elizabeth Gray Martin of Stanley. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Terry Ray and Lawrence David Gray.

A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 14, at the Stanley United Methodist Church by Evangelist Doug Gochenour. Burial was in the Graves Chapel Cemetery in Stanley.

The family received friends at the church on Wednesday from noon - 2 p.m.

Peter I. Bradt


Peter Irey Bradt, 69, of Mitchells, died on Friday, June 9, 2017, at Culpeper Health and Rehab Center in Culpeper.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Bradley Funeral Home.
