Chester Bolyard Jr.


Chester Dale Bolyard Jr., 57, of Staunton, died on Sunday, June 11, 2017, at Winchester Medical Center.

He was born on Aug. 14, 1959, in Kingwood, W.Va., and was a son of Chester Dale Bolyard Sr. and the late Norma Knotts Whitlock.

Mr. Bolyard was a driver for Masonite Doors and was a veteran of the United States Army, 82nd Airborne.

Surviving in addition to his father and his wife, Laurie Bolyard, are a son, Chester D. Bolyard III; a daughter, Stormy Minor; his stepmother, Shirley Bolyard; a stepson, James Minor Jr.; a stepdaughter, Jamie Minor; a brother, Dayton Bolyard; a sister, Illeita Sisson; and eight grandchildren.

Arrangements are being handled by the Henry Funeral Home.

Mae B. Housden


Mae Belle Housden, 70, of Stanley, died on Thursday, June 15, 2017, at her home.

She was born on Nov. 7, 1946, in Page County and was a daughter of the late Nathan William McCoy and Lucille Cubbage McCoy.

Mrs. Housden was a 1965 graduate of Page County High School and worked at Luray Textile, Sleepwear and at poultry farms until retiring. She was a member of the Leake’s Chapel Church of the Brethren and was an avid gardener.

On March 18, 1966, she married Clyde M. Housden, who preceded her in death.

She is survived by a son, Brad Housden of Stanley; a daughter, Teresa Good of Stanley; two granddaughters; and a great-grandson.

A funeral service was conducted on Monday, June 19, at the Leake’s Chapel Church of the Brethren by Pastor Earl Painter, Pastor Randy Miller and Pastor Johnny Clements. Burial was in the church cemetery.

David A. Dean


David Arnold Dean, 67, of Elkton, died on Saturday, June 17, 2017, at his home.

He was born on Sept. 23, 1949, in Rockingham County and was a son of the late Leon Henry Dean and Ruby Jane Hansbrough Dean.



Mr. Dean retired from Riddleberger Brothers as a superintendent, where he worked for many years. He was a lifetime resident of Elkton.



He is survived by two sons, Jeremy Dean of Elkton, and David Comer of Shenandoah; a brother, Eugene “Gene” Dean of Florida; two sisters, Ruth Morris of Greene County, and Mary Dean of Dillwyn; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 He was preceded in death by a daughter, Bonita Renea Dean; and a brother, Willard Dean.


A funeral service was conducted on Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton by Pastor Carter Dean. Burial was in the Mount Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville.

Glenda L. Good


Glenda Lenora Good, 63, of Luray, died on Tuesday, June 20, 2017, at Winchester Medical Center.

She was born on July 30, 1953, in Luray and was a daughter of Carson Cornelius Aleshire of Luray and the late Vivian Maxine Smelser Aleshire.

Surviving in addition to her father are four daughters, Lora Good and Patricia Hilliards, both of Luray, Kathy Sours of Weyers Cave, and Elizabeth Sours of Stanley; a brother, Clinton Aleshire of Luray; her companion, Edward Dinges of Luray; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Gregory Carson and Mark Allen Aleshire.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 23, at the Bradley Funeral Home by Pastor Frank Painter. Burial will be in the Leake’s Chapel Cemetery in Stanley.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday one hour prior to the service, from 10-11 a.m.



Joy M. Bennett


Joy Marie Bennett passed from this life June 14, 2017, at her home in Stanley, Va., at the age of 85 years, eight months and 15 days. She was born Sept. 30, 1931, in New Orleans, La.

Joy attended St. Anthony’s Catholic School in Washington, D.C. She worked at the National Geographic in Washington, D.C., and married Paul Earnest Bennett Aug. 5, 1958. He served with the United States Navy as chief communications officer aboard the U.S.S. Bennington from 1951-1955. Both were members of the Catholic church.

She is survived by two cousins, Harold Brouphy of Covington, La., and Noel Banowetz of Covington, La.; and her childhood friends and co-workers, Betty Lacey, Jo Claire Edwards, Maggie Clements, Martha Fisher and Virginia Jefferson.

A special thanks also goes out to her local friends, Alma Thomas, Beatrice Rickard, Catherine Stepp, Jonathan and Heather Lucas, and Jeanette Compton, for their numerous years of friendship, support and help. Lastly, to her caregivers, Terry Lucas and his wife, Cynthia, whose undaunted love and support has been so instrumental in giving her the care she so deserved.



She was preceded in death by her father, Douglas J. Delahay of New Orleans, La.; her mother, Marie B. Penedo of Veracruz, Mexico; and her husband of 52 years, Paul Earnest Bennett, a native of Maryland but a resident of Page County since 1968.



Arrangements will be made by Bradley Funeral Home.



She will be laid to rest beside her husband in a private burial at the Mount Zion Cemetery. (Paid Obituary)



Arnel W. Breeden


Arnel Wayne Breeden, 67, of Port Republic, formerly of Elkton, died on Thursday, June 15, 2017, at his home.

He was born on Dec. 30, 1949, in Rockingham County and was a son of the late Leon Lloyd Breeden and Ruth Naomi Smith Breeden.

Mr. Breeden was a lifetime resident of the Shenandoah Valley and was a member of the Bear Lithia Baptist Church. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

On June 17, 1972, he married Sharr Lam Breeden, who survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, Trampas, Brandon and Wesley Breeden, all of Elkton; a daughter, Crystal Breeden of Port Republic; a brother, Boyd Breeden of Elkton; a sister, Faye Johnson of Verona; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Edward R. Breeden.

A funeral service was conducted on Tuesday, June 20, at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton by Pastor Don Leatherman. Burial was in the Koontz Cemetery in Page County.

Nina I. Grimsley


Nina Irene Grimsley, 91, of Luray, died on Thursday, June 15, 2017, at Page Memorial Hospital.



She was born on May 9, 1926, in Luray and was a daughter of the late John David Hoak and Mary F. Miller Hoak.

Mrs. Grimsley worked as a clerk at the H&H store for 27 years and was a member of the Beth Eden Lutheran Church.

On Aug. 13, 1962, she married Mitchell Grimsley, who survives.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a sister, Betty Lou Hoak of Luray.

A graveside service was conducted on Monday, June 19, at the Beahm’s Chapel Cemetery in Luray by Alexander C. Zuber.



Jeffrey J. Garretson 




Jeffrey James Garretson, 51, of New Market, died on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church.

He was born on Aug. 13, 1965, in Carbondale, Ill., and was a son of Alan James Garretson and Ruth Ellen Orr Garretson of New Market.

Mr. Garretson was a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and was a member of the New Market Eagles.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a brother, Scott Garretson of Germantown, Md.; a sister, Kristin Shriver of Fairfax; and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were handled by the Bradley Funeral Home.



Mildred E. Griffith


Mildred Elmira Griffith, 88, of Front Royal, Va., passed away on Wednesday, June 14, 2017, in Winchester, Va.

The family received friends on Saturday, June 17, at 1 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home, followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m. Burial was private.

Mrs. Griffith was born August 1, 1928, in Page County, Va., daughter of the late Hubert H. Manuel and Maudie Bell Baker Manuel.

She was involved with several organizations including Women of the Moose, Elks, VFW and American Legion.

She was the wife of the late Kenneth J. Griffith.

Surviving are her children, Ray Griffith and wife Cindy, Sandy Strickler and husband Craig, and Donna Evans and husband Kenny, all of Front Royal; a son-in-law, Mike Brookman of Front Royal; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
