Mildred Y. Dovel


Mildred Yvonne Dovel, 78, of Elkton, died on Sunday, Aug. 6, 2017.

She was born on June 12, 1939, in the Ida area of Page County and was a daughter of the late Salathiel “Clark” Taylor and Minnie Mae Lam Taylor.

Mrs. Dovel worked in quality control at Genie and Overhead Door before retiring. She attended the Shenandoah Pentecostal Holiness Church and was an avid gardener.

On June 20, 1958, she married Noah N. Dovel, who died on March 15, 1965.

She is survived by two daughters, Sharon Wheeler and Rolanda Price, both of Shenandoah; her companion of 34 years, Gary L. Ferrell; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by eight siblings, Glenn, Russell, David, Roy, Perry and Alvah Taylor, Ruth Kayan and Helen Aleshire.

A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 9, at the Shenandoah Pentecostal Holiness Church by Pastor Jimmy Kite and Larry Sullivan. Burial was in the Rest Haven Community Cemetery in Shenandoah.

Roy R. Hensley


Roy Rudolph Hensley, 64, of Shenandoah, died on Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2017.

He was born on July 4, 1953, in Harrisonburg and was a son of the late Ronnie Rudolph Hensley and Loretta Frances Shifflett Hensley.



Mr. Hensley was a carpenter for many years.



He is survived by two sons, Scott and Roy Hensley II; two brothers, Ricky and Lee Hensley; two sisters, Sandra Hensley and Lisa Wilson; and four grandchildren.

A celebration of life service was conducted on Saturday, Aug. 5, at the family home by Pastor Rick Robertson.

Betty Jo Spencer


Betty Jo Spencer, 81, of Martinsburg, W.Va., died on Friday, Aug. 4, 2017, at her home, under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle.

She was born on July 31, 1936, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and was a daughter of the late Ira Albert McIntyre and Bertha Theola Catlett McIntyre.

Mrs. Spencer was Methodist by faith. She attended public schools in Morgan County, W.Va., had worked as a clerk at Mike’s Grocery and as a waitress at the Fairfax Restaurant, both in Berkeley Springs, W.Va. She had been a homemaker in recent years and was an avid cook.

Her husband, Harry Alvin Spencer Jr., preceded her in death.

She is survived by a son, Harry Alvin “Buddy” Spencer III of Martinsburg, W.Va.; a daughter, Mary Bess Spencer-Ridgeway of Luray; a stepson, David Spencer of Grand Bay, Ala.; a stepdaughter, Christina Britner of Bolivia, N.C.; two grandchildren; four step grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Baker; and six brothers, Wilbur “Bud,” Wilson, Willard, Clyde, Clark and Cleo McIntyre.

A funeral service was conducted on Tuesday, Aug. 8, at the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., by Pastor Ted Marsh. Burial was in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Cross Junction.

Arthur W. Walker


Arthur Wayne Walker, 57, of Luray, died on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2017.

Mr. Walker was born on April 29, 1960, in Culpeper and was a son of the late Emanuel Frank Walker and Josie Deco Horton Walker.

He is survived by two sisters, Monica Turner and Sharon Maebright, both of Luray; and William Franklin Walker of Front Royal. He was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Walker.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 11, at the Antioch Independent Bible Church in Luray by Pastor Frank Painter.



Donald L. Merica


Donald L. “Don” Merica, 83, of Elkton, died on Monday, July 31, 2017.

He was born on March 2, 1934, in Page County and was a son of the late Joseph Clinton Merica and Agnes Harris Merica.



Mr. Merica served in the U.S. Army and retired from ConAgra Foods, previously Morton Frozen Foods in Crozet.


Surviving in addition to his wife of 58 years, Beulah B. Merica, are two sons, Tim Merica and Greg McDonaldson; a daughter, Sherry Hensley; a brother, Dallas Merica; two sisters, Vertis “Peachy” Merica and Brenda Merica; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.



A celebration of life service was conducted on Saturday, Aug. 5, at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton by the Rev. Travis Hensley and Pastor Bob Silling.

Raymond Campbell


Raymond Eastham Campbell, 89, of Luray, died on Sunday, Aug. 6, 2017, at MontVue Nursing Home.

He was born on May 7, 1928, in Front Royal and was a son of the late Clarence and Ruth Campbell.

Mr. Campbell was a member of the Harvest Pentecostal Holiness Church in Luray.

On April 15, 1953, he married Alice Kenny Campbell, who survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, June Cave of Luray; two sisters, Pauline Mitchell of Woodstock, and Clara Richards of Front Royal; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rachel Everlene Utz; and a brother, Paul “Jake” Campbell.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12, at the Harvest Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Terry Cave.

The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday one hour prior to the service, from 1-2 p.m.

Peggy M. Corbin


Peggy Marie Corbin, 74, of 350 Dovel Hollow Rd., Stanley, died on Sunday, Aug. 6, 2017, at the Life Care Center of New Market.

She was born on July 29, 1943, in Stanley and was a daughter of the late Clarence Matthew Good and Mary Marie Good.

Mrs. Corbin was a 1960 graduate of Shenandoah High School and had worked as a secretary for Shenandoah National Park for 25 years.

On March 16, 1963, she married Orea Mitchell Corbin, who died on Jan. 4, 2016.

She is survived by two sons, Brad Matthew Corbin of Westmoreland, Tenn., and Josh Amon Corbin and wife Stacy of Stanley; a sister, Bonnie Elaine Blosser and husband Page of Stanley; two brothers, Ronnie Mathew Good and wife Elizabeth, and Charles MacDonald Good, all of Stanley; three grandchildren, Barrett Corbin of Tulsa, Okla., and Laney Elizabeth Corbin and Jacob David Corbin, both of Stanley.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 10, at the Calvary Independent Brethren Church by the Rev. Charles Turner. Burial will be in the Mount Zion Cemetery in Luray.

The family was to receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 9, at the church. (Paid Obituary)



Barbara D. Yesner


Barbara D. Yesner, 96, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, August 6, 2017, at Lynn Care Center.

A memorial service will be held at Page United Methodist Church at a later date.

Mrs. Yesner was born on February 21, 1921, in Breckenridge, Texas, to the late Eugene Perry Doyle and Nellie Sanders Canfield Doyle. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jack Yesner.

She was a librarian and a quilter. With her husband they sold quilts and fabric crafts while living in Florida.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet Wachsmuth (David) of Alaska, and Julia Bragan of Bentonville; two grandchildren, Michael Wachsmuth and Donna Schopp; and two great-grandchildren, Julia Henegar and Andrew Henegar.

Rufus J. Good


Rufus Junior Good, 65, of 2276 Farmview Rd., Luray, died on Thursday, Aug. 3, 2017.

He was born on March 8, 1952, in Luray and was a son of the late Rufus Luther Good and Carrie Victoria Gray Good.

On July 7, 1986, he married Diana L. Wailes Good, who survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Jeremiah J. Good and wife Michelle of Stanley; a stepdaughter, Kimberly Gamble of Stanley; three sisters, Grovene Cave, Nancy F. Aleshire and Mary Rothgeb, all of Luray; two grandsons, Jonathan Test of Orange, and Tyler Gamble of Luray; and two granddaughters, Mackenzie Stillwill of Luray, and Ashlynn Good of Stanley. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Johnny, Clyde, Albert and Carol “Bossy” Gray; and a sister, Nellie Turner.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12, at the Leake’s Chapel Church of the Brethren in Stanley by the Rev. Eric Croft.

The family received friends on Saturday, Aug. 5, at the Bradley Funeral Home.

Friends may also visit with the family at the residence at any time.

Robert H. Diehl


Robert H. Diehl, 80, of Luray, Va., passed away Sunday, August 6, 2017, at Page Memorial Hospital.

Robert was born March 29, 1937, in Harrisburg, Pa. He was the son of the late J. Robert Diehl and Janet Pauline Fetters Diehl.

He was in the U.S. Reserves in the 1960s. He retired from both AT&T and Kmart and was an active member and Sunday school teacher at Page United Methodist Church in Luray, Va.

Robert is survived by his companion of 23 years, Mabel E. Smith; her three daughters, Sandra Rowe (Pete), Sharon Daniels (Jason) and Susan Baker (Bobby); eight grandchildren, Danielle, Joshua, Jeremy, Victoria, Jonathan, Lindsay, Allison and Madeline; three great-grandchildren Austin, Jackson and Jameson; and his beloved dog, Sadie.

The family will receive friends at the Bradley Funeral Home in Luray on Thursday, August 10, 2017, from 7-8 p.m.

A graveside service will be held Friday, August 11, 2017, at 11 a.m. at Panorama Memorial Gardens in Strasburg, Va., with the Rev. Laura Stratton officiating.

A luncheon will be provided following the graveside service at Page United Methodist Church. (Paid Obituary)
