Elsie V. Batman
Elsie Virginia Comer Batman, 99, of Shenandoah, died on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at Bridgewater Home.
She was born on Dec. 11, 1912, in Shenandoah and was a daughter of the late Amos Jackson and Ada Florence McDaniel Comer.
Mrs. Batman grew up in Shenandoah and graduated from Shenandoah High School and Madison College. She retired in 1972, after 31 years with Page County Public Schools. She was past president of the Page County Education Association, secretary treasurer and president of District G. Teachers, treasurer of the Shenandoah High School Alumni Association and president of the Page County Retired Teachers.
She was a longtime member of the Christ United Methodist Church, where she served as choir director, organist for 30 years, Sunday school teacher, trustee and served on the administrative board.
 She served as chaplain and president of the Gideon Auxiliary.
On June 21, 1947, she married Jesse Louis Batman, who died on Oct. 13, 1981.
She is survived by a daughter, Janet Williams of Shenandoah; one granddaughter; and several nieces. She was preceded in death by a great-grandson; and brothers and sisters, Gertrude Robins, Owen Comer, Roy Comer, Vista Crowley, Anna Mae Comer and Mildred Comer.
A funeral service was conducted on Wednesday, Dec. 12, at the Chigger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton by the Rev. Stephen Screech and Pastor Jimmy Kite. Burial was in Easton Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg.

Roy G. Hilliards
Roy Gene Hilliards, 67, of Luray, died on Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
He was born on March 18, 1945, in Stanley and was a son of the late Paul E. Hilliards and Virgie Virginia Rhinehart Hilliards.
On April 20, 1964, he married the former Barbara Ann Haley, who survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife are four daughters, Peggy Weaver, Lori Woychak and Teresa Caviness, all of Luray, and Cathy Hilliards of Alexandria; a son, Roy “Buck” Hilliards Jr. of Luray; two brothers, Paul E. Hilliards Jr. of Luray, and Levi Hilliards of Front Royal; nine grandchildren; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Edmund Lee Hilliards; and a sister, Betty Jane Alger.
A funeral service was conducted on Sunday, Dec. 9, at the Bradley Funeral Home by Pastor Chris Palmer.

Goldie M. Zook
Goldie Marie Miller Zook, 92, of Stanley, formerly of Weatherford, Okla., died on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012.


A funeral service will be held by Lockstone Funeral Home in Weatherford, Okla., at a later date.
The family received friends at the Rileyville Church of the Brethren on Tuesday, Dec. 11.

Mary K. Atkins
Mary Kathleen Atkins, 88, of Bridgewater, died on Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at Bridgewater Home.
She was born on Feb. 21, 1924, and was a daughter of the late Dewey and Sadie Shifflett Hansbrough.


On April 29, 1939, she married Simmie Atkins, who died on April 1, 1985.
She is survived by four daughters, Juanita Lambert of Bridgewater, Judy VanDervander of Crimora, Betty Washburne of Oregon, and Geraline Borror of Harrisonburg; five sons, Dewey and Roger Atkins, both of Dayton, Jimmie Atkins of Brandywine, W.Va., Jesse Atkins of Timberville, and Ricky Atkins of Keezletown; a sister, Marie Shifflett of Shenandoah; two brothers, Denver and John Edward Hansbrough, both of Shenandoah; 26 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ellen Lenzi; two brothers, Homer and Leon Hansbrough; and a sister, Ruby Dean.
A funeral service was conducted on Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Johnson Funeral Service Chapel in Bridgewater by Pastor Tony Martin and the Rev. Arnold Repass. Burial was in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.

JoAnn M. Seal
JoAnn Marie Seal, 75, of Luray, died on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012.
She was born on April 1, 1937, in Luray and was a daughter of the late Charles Marion Jobe and Mona Marie Painter Jobe.
Mrs. Seal was a member of the St. Mark Lutheran Church.
On June 16, 1955, she married Daniel Ashby Seal, who died on Aug. 14, 2008.
She is survived by a son, Kenneth Seal of Staunton; a daughter, Linda Miller of New Market; a sister, Doris Jean Griffith of Luray; a brother, Douglas MacArthur Jobe of Shenandoah; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Edward Jobe.
A funeral service was conducted on Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Bradley Funeral Home by Garland “Bubba” Gochenour. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Luray.

Phyllis C. Hullihan
Phyllis Christine Hullihan, 63, of Front Royal, died on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at Warren Memorial Hospital.
She was born on Sept.14, 1949, in Luray and was a daughter of Wanda Wood Mathews of Rileyville and the late Josh Kibler.
Surviving in addition to her husband, Henry F. Hullihan Jr., are three sons, Bruce Cave of Shenandoah, and Ronnie and Michael Cook, both of Luray; one daughter, Tracey Thomas of Lillington, N.C.; and seven grandchildren.
A funeral service was conducted on Friday, Dec. 7, at Maddox Funeral Home by the Rev. Rick Kerfoot. Burial was in Panorama Memorial Gardens.

Anna E. Zepp
Anna Elizabeth Zepp, 88, died on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, in Cumberland, Md.
She was born on Jan. 22, 1924, in Luray and was a daughter of the late Frank Griffith and Virgie Gochenour Griffith.
Mrs. Zepp was a 75-year member of Main Street Baptist Church.
On April 9, 1953, she married Harry Lee Zepp, who died on May 7, 1987.
She is survived by a daughter, Kathy Ann Livengood and husband Mark Livengood of Ridgeley, W.Va.; a sister, Garnett V. Judd of Luray; and two granddaughters, Megan Elizabeth and Greta Nell. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Everett Frank Griffith and Clyde Elmer Griffith; and a sister, Pearl Griffith.
A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12, at the Bradley Funeral Home by Dr. Charles Jolley. Burial was in the Beahm’s Chapel Cemetery in Luray.
The family was to receive friends from 1-2 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home prior to the service. (Paid Obituary)

Clinton P. Runyon
Clinton Page “Pop” Runyon, 80, of 388 Runyon Rd., Rileyville, died on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
He was born on May 1, 1932, in Rileyville and was a son of the late Cecil Roy Runyon and Virgie Lee Henry Runyon.
Mr. Runyon worked as a park ranger for Shenandoah National Park, retiring in 1989 with more than 27 years of service. He was a Marine veteran, having served as sergeant during the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion Post 22, VFW, PATC, Marine Corps Association and the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation.
He is survived by a daughter, Cynthia Gale Runyon of Luray; two sons, Clinton Dale Runyon and wife Teresa Runyon of Rileyville, and Teddy Lee Runyon and wife Tina Runyon of Luray; two half sisters, Nancy and Shirley; two granddaughters, Melissa Riley and Charity Runyon; and three great-grandchildren, Emily Seal, Liam Riley and Audyn Good. He was preceded in death by a brother, Norman W. Runyon.
A graveside service was conducted on Monday, Dec. 10, at the Rileyville Cemetery by Gary Birkett.

Betty L. Dovel
Betty Lee Dovel, 82, of 778 Aylor Grubbs Ave., Stanley, died on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
She was born on Dec. 20, 1929, in Stanley and was a daughter of the late George Grigsby Stroupe and Sally Edna Higgs Stroupe.
On Aug. 9, 1950, she married Roy Elmo Dovel, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by a daughter, Pamela D. Goff and husband Larry Goff of Faber; a brother, Charles N. Stroupe of Luray; and two grandchildren, Tanner Golf and Lauren Goff, both of Faber. She was preceded in death by six sisters, Anna Christine Shenk, Gladys Marie Good, Frances Maxine Stroupe, Louise Virginia Hilliard, Elsie Elaine Rickard and June Estelle Wilson; and two brothers, Siford Eugene Stroupe and Tommy Wayne Stroupe.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, at the Leaksville Cemetery in Luray by the Rev. Charles R. Turner.
The family will receive friends at 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, at 778 Aylor Grubbs Ave, Stanley.
