Obituaries — Shenandoah County


Steven J. Carden


Steven "Stan" John Carden, 55, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away on Friday, March 11, 2016 at the UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville, Virginia.


A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 W. Main St., Front Royal, with the Rev. Lisa Webb officiating.
 Interment will take place at a later date at Panorama Memorial Gardens.


Mr. Carden was born May 7, 1960 in Brooklyn, New York to the late George Patrick Carden and Marie O'Brien Carden.


He has lived in the Front Royal area for 12 years and was currently a Regional Sales Manager with the Guerbet Company.


He attended the University of Nevada in Las Vegas, was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church.


He was a dog lover, adopting several dogs from the Warren County Humane Society.


Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Susan S. Carden of Front Royal; two sons, Reed Carden of Corolla, North Carolina and Drew Carden of Bunker Hill, West Virginia; two sisters, Maureen Carey and her husband Ed of Rye, New York and Virginia Carnahan and her husband David of Needham, Massachusetts; one brother, Bob Carden and his wife Susan of Naperville, Illinois; one sister-in-law, Donna Jewell and her husband Mike of Richmond, Virginia; and his aunt, Shirley Lynn of Woodstock, Virginia. He was blessed with many nieces and nephews whom he loved very much.


The family will receive friends on Friday, March 18, 2016 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Don R. Cook


Don Reid Cook, 81, of Bridgewater, went to be with the Lord, March 10, 2016.


Mr. Cook was born on March 3, 1935 in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Floyd Bowman and Hazel Billhimer Cook.


He was a long distance truck driver for Smith's Transfer in Verona for 23 years and later for S.L. Hess and Sons.


He was a member of the Mt. Clinton United Methodist Church. Mr. Cook served in the Army National Guard and was an avid sports fan.


Don enjoyed his family during holiday celebrations where there was always lots of love and food.


Mr. Cook was married to Linda Jean Dillard Cook, who died May 24, 2014 and to JoAnn Marie Cook, whom he married on May 5, 1975 and preceded him in death on May 4, 2000.


Mr. Cook is survived by his children, Donna Lynn Horan and husband John Jr., Strasburg, Edward Lee Cook Sr, Strasburg, Eldon Gene Cook, Bridgewater, and Erick Reid (Cookie) Cook, Harrisonburg; nine grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.


Mr. Cook was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Carrier and a sister, Nancy Lee Cook.


Reverend Andrew Peck-McClain conducted a funeral service Monday March 14, afternoon at 2 p.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.
 The family received friends prior to the funeral from 1 p.m. until 1:45 p.m.
 The casket was closed.

Gregory M. Dingus


Gregory Michael Dingus, 42, of Edinburg, passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at his residence.


He was born June 12, 1973 in Fairfax, Va. and was the son of David and Sharon (Bundick) Dingus.


He was raised and attended school in Mt. Olive, NJ, where he met and grew up with many dear friends.


Since moving to the Shenandoah Valley in 1996, he took great pleasure in spending time on the river and in the mountains with his friends and family.


He will be dearly missed by his family and friends, near and far.


In addition to his parents, Greg is survived by two sisters, Cynthia D. Walsh and husband Dan of Edinburg and Elizabeth D. Liptak and husband Cary of Lakeland, FL; one brother, Mark Dingus and wife Denise of Hackettstown, NJ; five nieces; and three nephews.


A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 14, 2016 at the Valley Funeral & Cremation Service's Chapel with Pastor Steve Wood who officiated.

Joel F. Donnelly Jr.


Joel Francis Donnelly Jr., 59, of Shenandoah Farms, Virginia, died Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at his home.


Joel was born Feb. 3, 1957 in Washington, DC, son of Joel Francis Donnelly Sr. and Jo Ann T. Sauber Donnelly.


He was a loving husband who married his soulmate, Stacy S. Murtha, on July 11, 1989 at sunrise on Bright Angel Trail in Grand Canyon, Arizona.


He was a devoted father and grandfather to four daughters, two grandaughters with another grandchild on the way.


He was a volunteer firefighter and EMT at SFVFD for 10 years. He thoroughly enjoyed his life on the river and was proud to share it with all.


Surviving with his wife is his mother of Vienna, Va.; four daughters, Seanan Corin Aubouin, Kailin Cori Donnelly, Jesse Francis Donnelly, and Jordan Delana Donnelly; two granddaughters, Amelie Belle and Avlynn May Aubouin; two brothers, James Donnelly of Vienna, Va. and Justin Donnelly of Reston, Va.; and a sister, Jennifer Donnelly-Schoffstall of Lovettsville, Va.


Preceding him in death were his father, Joel Francis Donnelly Sr. and his brother, Jeffrey T. Donnelly.


A Celebration of Life will be held 7:30 - 11:30 p.m. Friday, March 18, 2016 at Boyce Volunteer Fire Hall, Boyce, VA. Casual "tye dye" attire is suggested in honor of Joel.

Ann R. Schwarz Draper


Ann R. Schwarz Draper, 88, of Mt. Jackson, died Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at her home.


Mrs. Draper was born June 30, 1927 in Baltimore, Md., daughter of the late Herman P. and Catherine Dausch Schwarz
.

She was member of St. John Bosco Roman Catholic Church in Woodstock.


Mrs. Draper was married May 20, 1950 to LeRoy L. Draper Jr., who preceded her in death, June 29, 2001.


She is survived by two daughters, Debora A. Sinclair of Mt. Jackson and Karen R. Thomas of Pasadena, Md.; two sons, Lee L. Draper of Edinburg and Bruce K. Draper, of Baltimore, Md.; four grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.


A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 11 a.m. at St. John Bosco Roman Catholic Church in Woodstock. Father Michael Dobbins will officiate. Burial will follow in Mt. Jackson Cemetery.


The family will receive friends Friday, March 18, 2016 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Dellinger Funeral Home in Mt. Jackson.

Louis R. Gray


Louis R. Gray, 76, of Woodstock, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2016 at his home.


Services will be at a later date.


Louis was born March 20, 1939 in Page County. He was the son of the late Emory Gray and Erma Seal Gray Cook.


He was also preceded in death by a sister, Celia Gray and a brother, Charles Gray Sr.


He is survived by five sisters, Della Frazier of Remington, Charlotte Jenkins and husband Leonard of Luray, Rita Good and husband Frank of Luray, Rena Spain of Luray, and Mary Breeden and husband Roger of Stanley. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

Belinda M. Helsley


Belinda Marie Helsley, 58, of Toms Brook, passed away Monday, March 14, 2016 at the Winchester Medical Center.


She was born Oct. 6, 1957 in Woodstock and was the daughter of Carl and Lois (Thompson) Kavanaugh of Edinburg.


Belinda was a member of Wakemans Grove Church of the Brethren in Edinburg.


In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Carl Helsley of Toms Brook; one son, Malcolm Helsley of Toms Brook; and two brothers, Mike Kavanaugh of Edinburg and Wesley Kavanaugh of Quicksburg.


A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 18, 2016 in the Valley Funeral & Cremation Services Chapel with Rev. Howard Lutz officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset View Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Joey Miller, Marshal Barb, Teddy Helsley, Mike Helsley, Clay Cook and Doug Helsley.

William H. Jenkins Sr.


William Harry "Jack" Jenkins Sr., 81, of Woodstock, died Friday, March 11, 2016 at his residence.


He was born in Winchester on June 7, 1934, the son of Guy and Sarah Kane Jenkins.


Jack was married to Lillian Carter Jenkins for 45 years.


In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, William Jenkins Jr., Susan Taylor, Anthony Jenkins, Janie Jenkins, and Cynthia Getts; and numerous grand and great grandchildren.


A funeral was Tuesday at 12 p.m. in the Woodstock Christian Church, 109 S. Muhlenberg Street, Woodstock, with Pastor Bill Erbach who officiated.


Burial will be private.


Honorary bearers are Ricky Fravel and the Woodgrill Quilt Group Breakfast Bunch.


Friends will be received an hour prior to the service in the church.

Dallas M. Jones


Dallas Matthew Jones, 36, passed away on Sunday, March 13, 2016 at his home.

Dallas was born on July 16, 1979 in Beckley, WV. Although unable to walk from the age of three due to Muscular Dystrophy, he was an avid and active sports fan. He was a volunteer for several Frederick County Little League Baseball teams.

As a student at Aylor Middle and Sherando High School he was a manager for the basketball and baseball teams. He also coached a junior league basketball team through Frederick County Parks and Recreations for two years with his brother, Brandon. Despite his first name, he was an unwavering Redskins fan.

Dallas graduated with honors from Sherando High School in Stephens City, Va. in 1997 and attended Shenandoah University for two years as a business major. He was a member of Stephens City United Methodist Church and served as president of the youth group from 1996-1997.

Dallas was a warm and caring person, and he was treated kindly by everyone he met throughout his life. He would play sports with his brother, neighbors and friends who gladly made adaptations so he could be part of the group. He enjoyed participating in the Winchester Star Football Forecast and had the best record every year for more than a decade against his father and his best friend Brad Keelor.

He is survived by his parents, Debbie and Bob Jones of Stephens City; his brother, Brandon Jones and wife, Katie, and niece, Penny, of Arlington, Va.; his paternal grandparents, Robert and Helen Jones, of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; uncles, Kevin Jones (Connie), Paul Jones (Jan) and Mark Jones (Holly) all of Pa. and Bill Demarest of Middletown, Va.; his three cousins, Kelly, Tim, and Dylan Jones.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Arnold and Ruth Demarest.

A Funeral Service will be held at Stephens City United Methodist Church on Friday, March 18, 2016 at 1:30 p.m., with Sr. Pastor Bob Gochenour officiating and Reverend Waverly Reames co-officiating.

The family received friends from 6pm to 8pm on Thursday, March 17, 2016 at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel.

Interment will follow at Shenandoah Memorial Park Cemetery, Frederick County, Virginia. Joseph S. Lively, III


Joseph “Joey” Spencer Lively, III, 58, passed away on March 1, 2016 in Edinburg, Va. in the home of his caretakers, Scott and Sonya Lahmann.

Joey was born in 1957 in Winchester, Va. to the late Joseph Spencer Lively, Jr. (died 2005) and the late Alice Elizabeth Goodell Lively (died 1978).

Joey spent a number of years living in Lynchburg Training School and later in Beechcroft Group Home in Winchester, where he also worked for many years at the Northwestern Workshop Inc.

Many people cared about Joey. He was a loving and sweet boy who touched many lives. He will be missed.

Joey is survived by his two sisters: Betty A. Kovacs of Hummelstown, Pa. and Mary W. Lively of Spokane, Wa.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 3 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 114 W Boscawen St, Winchester, Va. 22601.

Michael Dearaway


Michael Dearaway, 36, of Woodstock, passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2016 surrounded by loved ones at his home.


Michael is survived by his wife, Jennifer Torres Fuentes; his son, Michael Antonio Dearaway; his mother, Janice Carol Standridge; his father, Edward Raymond Dearaway; his step mother, Genevieve Dearaway; his sister, Amanda Dearaway-Freeze; his brother, Kristopher Alexander Standridge; a niece; two nephews; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.


Michael's dear friend, Reverend Michael Crabill will be officiating the services.


A visitation was open to friends and family on Friday evening, March 11 from 6 p.m.- 8 p.m. at Dellinger Funeral Home in Woodstock.


A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 12 at Dellinger Funeral Home in Woodstock. Burial followed in the Massanutten Cemetery.


A reception for close family and friends was held at his sister's home to celebrate his life following the burial service.

Grace G. Pangle


Grace Lavonne Gochenour Pangle, 92, a resident of Strasburg, Va., passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at the home of her daughter in Strasburg, Va.


A funeral service for Mrs. Pangle was conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, March 14, 2016 at the Lebanon Lutheran Church with Rev. J.D. Cutlip who officiated. Burial followed in Lebanon Church Cemetery.


She was born in the Waterlick community of Warren County, VA on October 1, 1923, a daughter of the late Charles Medford and Naomi Frye Gochenour.


She was a member of Lebanon Lutheran Church and retired from Aileen Corporation in Strasburg, where she worked as a seamstress.


In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Arthur Pangle Jr.; and siblings, Tillden Gochenour, Garland Eastep, Catherine Cullers, Lola Gochenour and Freda Hill.


Survivors include her children, Carolyn Hitt, Richard Pangle, Delbert G. Pangle and wife Brenda, and James R. Pangle, all of Strasburg, Va.; six grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.


Pallbearers will be Jeremy Pangle, Carl Pangle, Michael Pangle, Rob Westcoat, Paul Alexiou, and Terry Baker.


Honorary pallbearers will be Floyd Ryman and Wayne Walker.

Donald Rinker


Donald Rinker, 85, of Toms Brook, went to be with the Lord on March 9, 2016 at Dutch Haven, Morning Glory in Maurertown.


The funeral was held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Valley Pike Church of the Brethren. Reverend Bill Garber officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery.


Mr. Rinker was born April 19, 1930 in Shenandoah County, son of the late Sarah Kohne Rinker and Filmore Rinker.


He was preceded in death by his wife, Grethel Rinker; his parents; five brothers; and two sisters.


He is survived by two sons and their wives, Ret. SSG. Robert and Wanda Rinker of Toms Brook, Va. and Danny and Andrea Rinker of New Market, Va.; grandchildren, Roberta Rinker of Silver Spring, Md., Stacey Rinker of Mt. Jackson and Chris Rinker of New Market; eight great grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Compton of Woodstock.


Donald was a member of Valley Pike Church of the Brethren and attended every Sunday and helped with whatever he could.


He was employed at Aileen Inc., Walt Smith Construction and in later years he operated his own construction company doing remodeling work in Shenandoah County.


Pallbearers will be Steve Rinker, Lloyd Click, Dave Burrows, Bill Shrum, Irvin Holler, Mike Farley, and Mark Bucher.

Donald L. Shaffer


Donald Lee Shaffer, 80, of New Market, passed away Sunday evening, March 13, 2016, at his home.

He was born April 28, 1935 and was a son of the late Andrew Jackson and Viola Florence Shiflett Shaffer.

Mr. Shaffer was a graduate of Bladensburg High School and Washington Bible College. He served in the U.S. Army and was a retired produce manager for Safeway.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Charlotte June Brown Shaffer; five children, Donna Leigh Shaffer Trent, Lloyd Andrew Shaffer, Richard Mark Shaffer, Lisa Gail Shaffer Wells and Matthew Brian Shaffer; a brother, Glenn Farrell Shaffer; 17 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Mr. Shaffer was a member of the Smith Creek Regular Baptist Church at New Market, where a funeral service was conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. with his pastor, the Rev. Brent Hockema, officiated. Interment followed at Cedar Grove Cemetery north of New Market.

A visitation was held at the church from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Friends also called at Theis Funeral Chapel in New Market until 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Ruby P. Thompson


Ruby Geraldine Polk Thompson, 93, of Edinburg, passed away Monday March 14, 2016 at Royal Haven in Front Royal.

The funeral was held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at Wakeman’s Grove Church of the Brethren. Pastor Mark Bowyer officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Thompson was born April 21, 1922 in Columbia Furnace, daughter of the late Rodney and Aggie Barrick Polk.

She was a member of Wakeman’s Grove Church of Brethren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John P. Thompson whom she married on August 17, 1946; two brothers, Glenn Polk and Floyd Polk and sister, Shirley Bentley.

She is survived by her son, Wilbur F. Thompson and wife Linda of Woodstock; daughter, Diana T. Barton and husband Richard of Edinburg; three sisters, Fern Ryman of Maurertown, Betty Mumaw of Edinburg and Patsy Himelright and husband Ray of Strasburg; brother, Norman Polk of Edinburg; sister-in-law, Goldie Polk of Edinburg; two grandchildren, Tara Bowers and Steven Thompson and great grandson, Evan Bowers.

Pallbearers were Phil Burner, Marty Helsley, Kenny Ryman, Bill Lam, Ronnie Hoffman, and Ronnie Wakeman.

Margaret A. Wilkins


With amazing grace, Margaret Ann Wilkins of Madison, Va., age 61, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 11, 2016, at her home embraced by her loved ones and her adored Irish wolfhound, Nolly.

Born in Woodstock, Va., she was the second of four daughters born to Caroline Matthews Wilkins of Bridgewater and the late James Cooper Wilkins.

For 38 years, Ann was a public schoolteacher until her retirement in 2014. She taught sixth-grade math at Criglersville Elementary School, Waverly Yowell Middle School, William Wetsel Middle School in Madison and most recently at Floyd T. Binns in Culpeper.

Ann’s passion in life was her Irish wolfhounds, to whom she referred as her “boys.” She participated in many dog shows in Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

In addition to her mother, Ann is survived by three sisters, Lenée Bryan of Avondale, Pa., Mary Wilson and her husband, Jack, of Charlottesville, Va., and Beth Bland and her husband, Gary, of Bridgewater, Va.; five nephews; three nieces; two great-nephews; and many cherished friends who cared for and supported her through her illness.

In addition to her father, she was predeceased by her brother-in-law, Fred Bryan.

A Celebration of Ann’s life will be held at a later date.
