Eugene E. Barb


Eugene Edwin Barb, 77, of Edinburg, passed away Thursday, Nov. 17, 2016 at his residence.

He was born March 4, 1939 in Shenandoah County and was the son of the late Edwin P. and Emma May Runion Barb.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Wanda Olinger.

Mr. Barb was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam and receiving the Purple Heart.

He had been a backhoe operator for Burgess Dellinger Construction and Richard Hottle and Harry Cooper.

He is survived by his wife, Irene Janette Andes Barb; six children, Anthony Barb and wife Susan of Woodstock, Liz Barb of Colorado, Johnny Andes of Basye, Deb Roberts and husband Chuck of Edinburg, Patricia Markley and husband Ronnie of Edinburg, and Benny Andes and wife Tammy of Woodstock; four sisters, Beatrice Hoal of Newport News, Violet Lonas and husband of Basye, Lucy McDuffie of Florida and Patsy Silvious and husband of Harrisonburg; two brothers, Curtis Barb and wife of Texas and Ray Barb and wife of Middletown; four grandchildren, Becky Richman, John A. Andes, Kendra Richman and Derick Barb; five great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, 2016 at Antioch Church of the Brethren with Pastor George Bowers officiating.

Pallbearers were Dustin Richman, Nathan Richman, Derick Barb, John A. Andes, Randy Lonas and Bo Hall.

Burial was private in St. Lukeás United Church of Christ at County Line.

Doris I. Bowman


Doris Irene Bowman, 74, of Edinburg, died Friday, Nov. 18, 2016 at her home.

Mrs. Bowman was born July 3, 1942 in Fairfax County, Virginia, daughter of the late David and Helen Virginia Mason Kidwell.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond William Bowman.

She is survived by a daughter, Donna Bowman of Woodstock.

Services will be private.

John S. Conner


John Stuart Conner passed away Nov. 21, 2016.

He was born in Gloucester, Virginia on Nov. 9, 1937 to William and Doris Conner.

Stuart graduated from Gloucester High School in 1956. After a year as an apprentice at the Newport News Shipyard, he attended Shenandoah College & Conservatory of Music, where he graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor of Music Degree.

Stuart was a band/choir director for 25 years and taught at Salem High School, Gloucester High School, West Point High and Elementary Schools, Mount Jackson High School and Robert E. Aylor Middle School.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Billy Conner (Julia Lee); a sister, Mildred Dirle (Michael) and two brothers-in-law, William Courtney and Reinaldo Morales.

Stuart is survived by his beloved wife, Mary; and their children and spouses, Sharon Conner and David Rooks, Christi and Frank Morton, and Neale and Donna Kemp. They in turn blessed him with seven grandchildren, Dylan and Logan Rooks, Alexandra Morton King (Dan), Avery and Jack Morton and Samantha and Noah Kemp.

He is also survived by his brothers, Byron (Carmen), Gene (Judy), Edward (Susan); his sisters, Doris Courtney, Patsy Morales, Bessie Conner and Margaret Figgins (Bob); along with a host of nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to the Sentara Hospice team and especially Kat, Sharon and Janemarie.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26 at New Hope United Methodist Church, 2489 Lewis Puller Highway, Saluda, VA 23149.

Robert C. Deavers Sr.


Robert Clark Deavers Sr., 53, of Strasburg, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2016 at Blue Ridge Hospice in Winchester.

The funeral service was held Saturday, Nov. 19 at 1 p.m. at Liberty Baptist Church in Strasburg, Va. Pastor Keith Warren officiated. Burial followed in Harrisville Cemetery in Toms Brook, Va.

The family received friends from 11 a.m.-1 p.m Saturday at the Church.

Mr. Deavers was born April 13, 1963 in Silver Spring, Md., son of Mary Agnes Deavers Sibert of Strasburg and the late Charles W. Deavers.

He was a 1981 graduate of Strasburg High School, where he played football for the Rams.

He was a self-employed cement finisher and a member of the Strasburg Moose Lodge #403.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Blanche Kidwell Deavers and grandparents, Charles and Sarah Kenney.

He is survived, along with his mother, by his step father, Rodney L. Sibert of Strasburg; son, Robert Deavers Jr. of Edinburg; daughter, Kala Boucher and husband Brian of Strasburg; and step granddaughter, Chloe Boucher.

Pallbearers were Brian Boucher, Cody Shipe, Jeffrey Argueta, Terry Bowers Sr., Terry Bowers Jr., and Jeremy Campbell.

Mathew E. Halterman


Mathew Edward Halterman, 71, of Quicksburg, passed away Thursday morning Nov. 17, 2016 at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital in Woodstock.

Mr. Halterman, a retired carpet installer, was born at Woodstock on June 12, 1945 and was the son of the late Annie Barb.

He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara Didawick Heishman Halterman.

Mr. Halterman is survived by two sons, James Halterman of Quicksburg, with whom he made his home, and John Halterman of Maurertown; a sister, Shirley Green of Mt. Jackson; five grandchildren, Lexie Halterman, Jake Halterman, Heather Hodson, Justin Halterman and Emily Halterman; four step grandchildren, Tanner Boyce, Noella Mannus, Bradley Boyce and Aaron Carter; and a great granddaughter, Tinleigh Halterman.

He was predeceased by two great granddaughters, Isabella and Lilliana Hodson.

A private family burial will be held at a later date.

Theis Funeral Chapel in New Market will be handling the cremation arrangements.



Albert T. Mitchell


Albert T. Mitchell, 73, died Sunday, Nov. 20 at his home in Palmyra, Va.

Mr. Mitchell was born in Alexandria, Va. and graduated from Francis C. Hammond High School. He attended the University of Richmond on a football scholarship, where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1964. He received his law degree from the Washington & Lee University School of Law in 1967.

Mr. Mitchell started his legal career in the Law Offices of Marsh & Sarver in Strasburg, Va. and later formed the firm of Mitchell & Arthur with the late Douglas C. Arthur of Strasburg.

After serving as the Commonwealth Attorney for Shenandoah County, he returned to private practice in 1976. Mr. Mitchell served as the assistant Commonwealth Attorney for Shenandoah County from 1990 until 1999 and was elected as the Commonwealth Attorney in Nov. 1999. He served as the Commonwealth Attorney until 2011, when he did not seek reelection.

In addition, Mr. Mitchell has served as town attorney for Woodstock since 1970.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Toni; three children, Christine and her husband Steve, Jennifer and Trav; three grandchildren, Mitch, A.J. and Elizabeth; two step grandchildren, Genevieve and Garrett; two brothers and their wives, Robert and Nancy and William and Cecelia; and a cousin and his wife, Scott and Michelle.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Robert and Evelyn Mitchell; and a cousin, Beverly Wetsel.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 26 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Woodstock.

A reception will follow in the parish hall.



Gatha L. Souder


Gatha Lee Souder, 89, of Mathias, W.Va., died Nov. 16, 2016, at Life Care Center of New Market. She was born Dec. 22, 1926, in Mathias, W.Va., to the late Lester Westfall and Katie Lee Mathias Garrett.

Gatha was a beautician for 45 years. She was a lifelong member of Garrett’s Chapel United Methodist Church. She served as a board member of Mathias Community Center. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Moorefield and the Hardy County Democratic Committee. She loved tending to her garden and flowers, and loved cooking for others.

She is survived by her husband, Roland Souder.

Also surviving are one son, Richard Heishman and wife, Patricia, of Mathias; one granddaughter, Jennifer Haviland of Criders; four grandsons, Aaron Heishman of Washington, D.C., and Patrick Cowan, Andrew Cowan and Benjamin Cowan, all of Maryland; eight great-grandchildren; special brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and 14 nieces and nephews.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

A funeral service was held 10 a.m. Saturday at Garrett’s Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jonathan Hedrick officiating. Burial was in the Cedar Hill Cemetery.

The family received friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway.

Curtis E. Stroop


Curtis Eugene "Gene" Stroop, 84, of Mount Jackson, Va., passed away Saturday, Nov. 19, 2016 at Life Care of New Market, Va.

He was born to the late Fredrick W. and the late W. Maude (Day) Stroop on June 3, 1932 in Rockingham County, Va.

Gene was a retired truck driver and retired from the Shenandoah County Sheriffás Office.

One of his greatest joys was playing bluegrass music with his brothers and large circle of blue grass buddies. He was a member of the Mt. Jackson Lodge 103 AF & AM.

Gene is survived by his wife, Kay Gosney Stroop; three children, Steven Eugene Stroop of Staunton, Va., Lois Ann Morrison of Woodstock, Va., and Kathy Lynn Stroop of Falls Church, Va.; six step children, James Gosney, Wanda Revercomb, Donna Allman, Lisa Haines, Gregory Haines, and Robert Haines; two sisters, Mildred Green Sherman and Dorothy Grim Bean, both of Mt. Jackson, Va.; one granddaughter; 14 step grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In 1952 he first married the late Margaret Thorpe and in 1983 he married the late Frances Southerly Haines.

He was preceded in death by six siblings, Francis M. Keister, Mamie R. Stroop, Freeman W. Stroop, Sidney R. Stroop, Donald F. Stroop and Georgie N. Hamilton.

A funeral, officiated by the Rev. Donnie Owens, was held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Valley Funeral Chapel, 14116 South Middle Rd., Edinburg, Va. where the family received friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Interment followed in the Mount Jackson Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Larry Green, Nolan Green, Rob Lankard, Charles Dellinger, Mike Grim, Kenny Hamilton and Dan Higdon.

Honorary pallbearers were the Scooter Club, Merle Thorpe and Ronnie Runion

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Mt. Jackson Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 251, Mt. Jackson, VA 22842.

Glenn E. Thompson


Glenn Ellrose Thompson, 75, of Mt. Jackson, died Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2016 at Sentara RMH Medical Center in Harrisonbiurg.

He was born May 25, 1941 in Whitmere, West Virginia, son of the late Grover Cleveland and Florence Ellen George Thompson.

He was a supervisor with Aileen, Inc. in Edinburg prior to his retirement.

He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Virginia Thorpe Thompson.

Mr. Thompson is survived by two daughters, Christina Maier and Amanda Ellen Thompson, both of Mt. Jackson; a son, Glenn Scott Thompson of Mt. Jackson; a brother, Richard Thompson of Bergton; 10 grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
