Obituaries — Shenandoah County


Barbara S. Ambrose


Barbara Sperry Ambrose passed away on Dec. 17, 2016 at Winchester Medical Center from complications of Pneumonia.


Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2016 at 2 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 West Main St., Front Royal with Sammy Campbell officiating. The family received friends one hour prior to the service. Burial followed in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Middletown, Virginia.


Mrs. Ambrose was born on Aug. 10, 1943 to the late Thomas Ainsworth Sperry and Arreta Wakeman Sperry.


She grew up in Middletown, Virginia and graduated from James Wood High School. She continued her education at the Medical College of Virginia, School of Pharmacy where she received her Pharmacy degree. She was a Pharmacist at Trout Drug Company for many years.


She was very active in the community and was a past member of the BPW and Warren Memorial Hospital Auxiliary as well as a life member of the Middletown Fire Department Auxiliary. She was a member of the Front Royal Jaycettes, having served as president. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and The Helltown Red Hatters.


Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Edgar Ambrose; daughter, Heather (Brent); grandchildren, Baylin and Piper, whom she adored; brother, Dr. Thomas Sperry (Sandy) and a niece and nephew.


In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Samuels Public Library, 330 East Criser Road, Front Royal, VA 22630, for the children's section.




Tyler W. Bailey


Tyler Waverly Bailey, 22, of Strasburg, passed away Monday, Dec. 12, 2016 at Fauquier Hospital, Warrenton.


A funeral service was conducted 12 p.m. Monday, Dec. 19, 2016 at Stover Memorial Chapel, Strasburg with Pastor Randy Hayes officiating. Burial followed in Panorama Memorial Gardens, Waterlick.


Mr. Bailey was born Sept. 28, 1994 in Front Royal. He was a paver operator for W-L Construction, Stephenson.


Surviving are his parents, Don Waverly Bailey of Front Royal and Jamie Ruth Bolt Stonebreaker of Strasburg; his wife, Samantha Marie Moore Bailey; two sons, Levi Wayne Bailey of Front Royal and Liam Axle Bailey of Strasburg; his siblings, Kaila Bolt, Austin Stonebreaker, Dalton Stonebreaker and Ashlynn Bailey, all of Strasburg, and Hunter Bailey and Alexis Bailey, both of Winchester; his step father, Robert "Bobby" Stonebreaker of Strasburg; his step mother, Michelle Henry of Strasburg; step brother, Robert Henry of Strasburg; step sister, Shelby Henry of Strasburg; his grandparents, Waverly and Catherine Bailey of Front Royal, Lorraine and Gary Bolt of Front Royal and Melodie Williams of Strasburg; his great grandmother, Dorothy Jones of Front Royal; his Aunt Gin Kirby; and many other uncles, aunts and cousins.


Pallbearers were Sergio Mejia, Austin Stonebreaker, Dalton Stonebreaker, Nathan Knight, Wayne Lewis, Matthew Bolt, Collin Cook and Machias Davis.


Honorary pallbearers were Allan Stinson and Buddy Mahoney.


The family received friends at Stover Funeral Home, 177 N. Holliday St., Strasburg on Sunday from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m.

Gertrude D. Boyd


My beloved mother, Gertrude Dorothy Boyd, 88, of Front Royal, Virginia passed away on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2016 at Warren Memorial Hospital.


Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2016 at 10 a.m. at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 West Main St., Front Royal with Pastor Happy Anderson officiating. Burial followed in Panorama Memorial Gardens, Waterlick, Virginia where she will be laid to rest next to my father, Thomas Eugene Boyd.


Mrs. Boyd was born on May 21, 1928 in Warren County, Virginia to the late Charles Ernest Kuser and Ella Virginia Fox Kuser.


She was a homemaker and the wife of the late Thomas Eugene Boyd. Married in 1945, they were married for 54 years before he went to meet his Lord.


Survivors include her son, Roger Lee Boyd, Sr. (Carol) of Front Royal; daughter-in-law, Darlene Boyd of Woodstock, Virginia; three grandchildren, Roger Lee Boyd, Jr. and Christine Boyd Ruffner both of Front Royal and Stephen Eugene Boyd of Woodstock; and four great grandchildren, Chelsea LeAnn Ruffner, Brady Lee Ruffner, Anjelica Lee Boyd and Halie Anne Elizabeth Conroy all of Front Royal.


She was preceded in death by her son, Daniel Eugene Boyd and three brothers, Charles S. Kuser, Reuben W. Kuser and Aubrey Lee Kuser.


My precious mother was a member of the Church of God in Front Royal for many years.


Pallbearers were her grandsons, Roger Lee Boyd, Jr. and Stephen Eugene Boyd and her nephews, Charles W. Boyd and John Kuser. Also serving will be Jody Ruffner and Matthew Boyd.
Honorary pallbearers were her granddaughter, Christine Boyd Ruffner and great granddaughters, Chelsea LeAnn Ruffner, Anjelica Lee Boyd and Halie Anne Elizabeth Conroy and her nieces, Rosa Cusick, Linda Goodman, Patricia Ann Williams and Virginia Cave.


The family received friends on Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.




Diane L. Clinedinst


Diane Lynn Clinedinst, 60 of New Market passed away Sunday, Dec. 18, 2016 at Winchester Mediacal Center.

She was born July 11, 1956 and was the daughter of the late Theodore Clinedinst, Jr. and Annabelle Hansberger Clinedinst.

She is survived by three sisters, Delores Lucas, Polly Weatherholtz and Gloria Huffman and two brothers Theodore Clindinst, 3 and Mickey Clinedinst.

No services are planned.

Robert L. Dinges


Robert Leon Dinges, 80, of Woodstock, passed away Thursday, Dec. 15, 2016 at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital in Woodstock.


A graveside service was held Monday, Dec. 19, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Emerson Walters Cemetery in Fort Valley. Pastor Shelvie Mantz officiated.


Mr. Dinges was born Feb. 13, 1936 in Fort Valley, son of the late Samuel and Minnie Bell Plauger Dinges.


He retired from the U.S. Forest Service and was a member of the former Trinity Brethren Church in Fort Valley.


He was preceded in death by his wife, Golda Rinker Dinges.


He is survived by his sister, Frances Helsley Dinges of Strasburg.

Ray W. Hall


Ray William Hall, 69, passed away on Dec. 8, 2016 at his home in Winchester.


Ray was born on November 15, 1947 in Front Royal, the youngest of nine children.


He graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration from James Madison University in 1974.


In 1976, he married Sharon Louise Foltz of Edinburg.


He independently owned an Interstate Batteries distributorship in Prattville, AL, before retiring in 2009 and moving to Winchester in 2015.


Ray was an avid hiking enthusiast; he hiked the Grand Canyon and Appalachian Trail numerous times, among dozens of other hikes all over the country. He also volunteered his time to help with wilderness trail repair, so that others may enjoy nature as he did.


Ray is survived by his wife, Sharon Hall; and two sons, Jason (Lindsay) Hall of Seattle, WA and Jordan Hall of Winchester VA; four brothers, Francis Hall, Delano Hall, Gene Hall, and James Hall; three sisters, Adelaide Siegel, Susan Bayens and Mary Ruth Wenner. 


In addition to his parents, Dalton and Grace Hall, he was preceded in death by his sister, Ophelia Holliday.


Ray will be cremated and services will be held at a later date.


His family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Sierra Club, National Parks, or Melanoma Research Foundations.





Sarah L. Hammond


Sarah Louise Hammond, 87, of Strasburg passed away Saturday, Dec. 17, 2016 at Heritage Hall Nursing Home, Front Royal.


A funeral service was conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2016 at Stover Memorial Chapel, Strasburg. Burial will follow in Panorama Memorial Gardens, Waterlick.


Mrs. Hammond was born Oct. 3, 1929 in Strasburg, a daughter of the late Raymond James and Bessie Mae Middleton Palmer.


She was a homemaker and had worked at National Fruit and as a certified nursing assistant.


She was the wife of the late Garland Bernell Hammond.


Surviving are her daughter, Karen Rae Sissler, Inwood, WV; two sons, Craig D. Hammond of Middletown and Steven A. Hammond of Strasburg; four grandchildren, Kimberly Brake, Kevin Racey, Craig Hammond, Jr. and Brandi Michaels; four great-grandchildren, Fortis Brake, Cullen Hammond, Landon Hammond and Sophia Louise Hammond; a sister, Hazel Detamore of St. Louis, MO; a brother, Gary Rotruck of Burlington, WV.


She was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Hammond.


Pallbearers were Craig Hammond, Jr., Kevin Racey, Jason Farmer, Jerry Henry, Randy Garcia and Fortis Brake.


Honorary pallbearers were Sandy W. Wilkins and the staff at Heritage Hall Nursing Home.


The family received friends at Stover Funeral Home, 177 N. Holliday St., Strasburg on Tuesday from 6 p.m. til 8 p.m.

Philip E. Heishman Jr.


Philip Elmer Heishman Jr., 91, of Edinburg, passed away Monday, Dec. 12, 2016 at the Winchester Medical Center.


The funeral service was held Saturday, Dec. 17 at 1 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Fort Valley. The Reverend Shelby DePriest officiated.


He was born April 6, 1925 in Fort Valley and was the son of the late Philip Elmer and Caroline Elizabeth (Carpenter) Heishman.


He was a used car salesman and formerly worked at Edinburg Aileen and Walmart.


He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and Woodstock Moose Lodge.


He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine "Jeannie" Heishman; and three sisters, Ruth Hollar, Ellnora McClanahan and Charlotte Gingerich.


Mr. Heishman is survived by his daughter, Mary Heishman Makely and her husband John of Woodstock; step daughter, Virginia "Ginny" Minor of Linden; two brothers, Charles and Cecil Heishman, both of Fort Valley; four grandchildren, Kimberly Jenkins, Kelly Grape, Mileah Gundy and Stephanie Farrell; five great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.


Pallbearers were, Allen Gingrich, Terry Baugher, Mike Hollar, Philip W. Heishman, William Mantz, Tyler Adams and Steven Heishman.


The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Lillian V. Johnson


Lillian Virginia “Pete” Johnson, 93, of Broadway, died Dec. 18, 2016, at Life Care Center of New Market.

She was born Jan. 30, 1923, in Broadway and was a daughter of the late Mark and Bessie Williams Campbell.

She was a homemaker and a U.S. Army veteran, having served from 1943-46. She attended Calvary Baptist Church in Timberville.

Her husband, Winton Paul Johnson, preceded her in death on Feb. 16, 2003.

She is survived by a son, John Johnson of New Market; three granddaughters, Michelle Johnson, Donna Wilson and Kari Johnson; and five great-granddaughters, Layla and Brenna Wilson, Bridget and Nicole Silvious and Hannah Johnson.

Pastor Guy Ferrell will conduct a graveside service Friday at 1 p.m. at Timberville Cemetery.

Friends may call or visit the Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway. The casket will be closed.

George T. Keller


George Thomas Keller, 79, of Edinburg, passed away Friday, Dec. 16, 2016 at his home.


George was born May 21, 1937, in Washington D.C., son of the late Charles Russell and Florence Myrtle Beall Keller.


He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy receiving an honorable discharge after his plane crashed off of Greenland in the Atlantic Ocean on April 21, 1960. He had to relearn to write with his other hand.


He became an electrician licensed in Va., Md., & WV, and also taught electrical skills to the Local Union 26 members for 14 years.


He won the Presidential award for the Lions club and also a lifetime pass for Oakton High School for donating his time to install the stadium lights at his children's school.


He is survived by his wife Hilda Haun Keller; children, Kar-en Lea Bishop and husband, Mike, of Tampa, Fl., Valerie Lynn Keller of Edinburg, Va. and George Todd Keller and wife, Loriann, of Fairfax, Va.; his sister, Catherine Louise Brown and husband, Jerry, of Washington, In.; his grandchildren, Clint L. Bishop, Bryant S. Bishop, Laura Rose I. Bishop, Nicholas P. Ahern, Tori, Cole, Zachary and John Keller; great grandchild, Gavin Bishop; Step children Pamela Courtney and husband, Perry, of Warrenton, VA; Michael Lindamood and wife, Barbara, of Martinsburg, WV; Step grandchildren, Heather Kidd and husband, Christopher, Michael T. Lindamood II and wife, Brea; step great grandchildren, Emma Kidd and Alyvia Lindamood.


In addition to his parents, Mr. Keller was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice H. Keller, in 2008; his sisters and brothers, Evelyn M. Payne, Charles R. Keller Jr., Elizabeth Ann Knapp, and Walter B. Keller.


Memorial services were conducted by Rev. Dr. Charles Wood II at Dellinger Funeral Home in Woodstock, Va., Wednesday, Dec. 21 at 2pm. The viewing was Tuesday, Dec. 20 between 6 and 8 p.m. at Dellingers Funeral Home in Woodstock.

Joan P. Miller


Joan Parnell Miller, 78, of Woodstock, Va. passed away in a peaceful sleep on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2016.

Joan was the daughter of the late Ilene Hammond, who resided in Goodwater, Al.

Joan attended Madison College (currently James Madison University) and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Following her graduation, Joan worked in the Winchester Memorial Hospital operating room. Subsequently it was Joan’s next position as operating room supervisor at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital that she would meet and eventually marry the love of her life, Dr. Harold W. Miller Jr.

Joan lived a majority of her adult life in Woodstock, Va. She attended Saint Paul’s United Church of Christ and served in a variety of capacities within the church. Joan had many fond memories during her time there.

Joan will be dearly missed by her son, Ramsey S. Miller, and daughter in law Charis R. Miller.

A public viewing will be held at Dellinger Funeral Home in Woodstock, Va. from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday Dec. 23. A public graveside memorial service will be held at Sunset View Memorial Gardens at 1 p.m. Following the memorial service a reception will be held at the family residence – 609 Kestrel Court, Woodstock, VA 22664.

Elva M. Pence


Essie "Essie" (Nichols) Pence, 92, formerly of Mt. Jackson passed away Monday, Dec. 19 in Roanoke, Va.


Mrs. Pence was born Feb. 11, 1924 in Page Co. She was the daughter of William Daniel (Bubby) Nichols and Martha Jane (Cook) Nichols.


She was a member of St. Mary's Pine Lutheran Church at Mt. Jackson.


Mrs. Pence was preceded in death by her husband Wade H. Pence Jr. on Jan. 19, 2011.


She is survived by a daughter, Cheryl Moody; a son, Wade Pence III and his wife, Carrie; sister, Marguerite Turner; and brother, Ernest Nicholas; two grandchildren, Mary Beth Chopski and her husband, Michael, Danielle Wilcox and her husband, Dustin; and two great grandchildren, Jonas Chopski and Ruth Wilcox.


She was preceded in death by her brothers, Daniel Nicholas and his wife, Lilly, and John Nicholas and his wife, Dorothy; and by her sister, Elizabeth (Gin) Jenkins and her husband, Harold (Pete).


Funeral services will be held at 11a.m. on Friday, December 23 at St. Mary's Pine Church with the Rev. Karen Van Stee officiating. Burial will follow at Solomon Cemetery at Forestville.
The family will receive friends at St. Mary's Pine Church fellowship hall following graveside services.

Herman A. Rudacille


Herman Allan "Sonny" Rudacille, 78, of Front Royal, Va., passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2016.


The family received friends on Sunday, Dec. 18 from 1 to 2 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m. conducted by Sammy Campbell. Burial followed in Prospect Hill Cemetery.


Sonny was born Feb. 9, 1938 in Martinsburg, WV, son of the late Herman Clifton Rudacille and Virginia Elizabeth Woodward Rudacille.


He was a graduate of Warren County High School.


Sonny was a U.S. Air Force veteran and retired as a supervisor from Raytheon.


Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Compton Rudacille; one son, Scot Allan Rudacille of Front Royal; and one nephew, Tom Cooper of Woodstock, Va.


He was preceded in death by his sister, Elsie Redden.




John H. Stauff


John H. Stauff, 87, of Harrisonburg, and formerly of New Market, passed away Sunday, Dec. 18, 2016, at Sentara RMH Medical Center in Harrisonburg.

A memorial service was held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Reformation Lutheran Church in New Market.

Theis Funeral Chapel in New Market will be handling the cremation arrangements.



James R. Stroop


James Ray Stroop, 70, of New Market, passed away Saturday, Dec. 17, 2016, at home. He was born Jan. 3, 1946, in Shenandoah County and was a son of the late Melvin and Grace Norcross Stroop.

Mr. Stroop worked for Shen-Valley Meat Packers, Franwood Farms Inc., and APT Inc. before retiring. He loved his family and enjoyed his farm and hunting.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra Biller Stroop; a daughter, Angela Miller, husband, Doug, and one granddaughter, Icie Marie; sisters, Janice Scudder, Margaret Biller, Marlene Huffman, Diane Tisinger, Sandra Vasbinder and Linda Carter; and one brother, Davy.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Harold and Clyde, and a sister, Bernice Smith.

He wished to be cremated and a private memorial service is to be held at a later date at the farm he loved.

Arrangements are being handled by Theis Funeral Chapel in New Market, where friends may sign the register book until Wednesday.



Priscilla E. Wenger


Priscilla Ellen Wenger, 72, of Edinburg, passed away Saturday, Dec. 17, 2016 at Winchester Medical Center.


She was born Dec. 17, 1944 in Woodstock, daughter of the late Bernard Wenger, Jr. and Nadine Beckett Wenger.


She is survived by a son, Stacy Bonner and his wife Debbie of Edinburg; a brother, John Wenger of Alaska; and three grandchildren.


A memorial service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Community Mission Church, 50 Coffmantown Road, Woodstock, VA with the Rev. Howard Lutz officiating.


Arrangements are by Dellinger Funeral Home in Woodstock.
