Robert H. Arnold

Robert Hartwell Arnold, 88, of Woodstock, Va, passed away Monday, Jan. 9, 2017 at Skyline Terrance Nursing Home, Woodstock, Va.

Services and burial for Mr. Arnold will be conducted privately at a later date.

Mr. Arnold was born in Bedford, Va. on March 24, 1928, a son of the late Joseph David and Beulah Craig Arnold.

Mr. Arnold was a veteran of the United States Air Force and retired from the U.S Government where he worked for the Office of Personnel Management.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Robert H. Arnold Jr. and a brother, David Arnold.

He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Reynolds Arnold of the home; his beloved children, Rebecca Mann (Larry) of White Plains, Md., Laura Hurlebaus (John) of Stevensville, Md., and Susan Arnold Philpott (Clive) of Centerville, Va; and his grandchildren, Lauren Gradowski, Jennifer Gradowski, Robert Coker, Maxwell Philpott, Jacob Philpott, Mark Hurlebaus, Eric Hurlebaus and Caroline Hurlebaus.

The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorial contributions to Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 122 E. Court St., Woodstock, VA 22664.

Walter H. Barkley

Walter Henry Barkley, 78, of Broadway, Va, died Jan. 5, 2017 at his home.

He was born March 26, 1938 in Highland County, Va. to the late Alfred and Almeda Hedrick Barkley.

He worked at Tyson's before retiring. He loved turkey and deer hunting.

Surviving are two sons, Sam Lineweaver and wife Melissa, and Buckshot Lineweaver, all of Timberville; three daughters, Bonnie A. Driver of Woodstock, Christine Mongold of Moorefield, WV, and Barbara Jean Kite and companion Bill Payne of Harrisonburg; son-in-law, Dennis Mongold of Bergton; three sisters, Betty Wolfe of Highland County, and Phyllis Barkley and Patsy Reedy, both of Broadway; a grandson raised in the home, Teddy Custer of Broadway; seven grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

His son, Walter "Noonie" Custer, and two sisters, Katherine Doyle and Margaret Hoover, preceded him in death.

The Rev. Stephen Estep conducted a funeral service at 1 p.m. Monday at Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway. Burial was in Blue Grass Cemetery in Highland County.

The family received friends 6 - 8 p.m. Saturday at Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway.

Ruth E. Jordan

Ruth Elisabeth Jordan, 60, of Basye, passed away Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017 at her home.

The family received friends Wednesday, Jan. 11 from 6-8 p.m. at Valley Funeral Service in Bowman's Crossing.

Miss Jordan was born Feb. 9, 1956 in Woodstock, daughter of the late John Joseph Jordan and Helene Behr Jordan.

She retired from Fairfax County Public Schools and was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her son, Christopher Jordan and wife Bethany of Mt. Jackson; and brother, Peter Jordan and wife Mary Ann of Mt. Jackson. She is also survived by her companion, Richard Barb of Basye.

Memorial contributions may be made to Otterbein United Methodist Church, c/o Philip Bowman, 11117 S. Middle Rd., Edinburg, VA. 22824 or to the Humane Society of Shenandoah County.

Betty J. Long

Betty Jane Long, 74, of Winchester, Va. died on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017 at Sentara RMH Medical Center in Harrisonburg, Va.

Mrs. Long was born on July 10, 1942 in Winchester, Va, to the late Floyd E. and Helen J. Washington Walker. She previously worked for International Automotive Components in Strasburg, Va. Mrs. Long was a member of the Supreme Council of the House of Jacob in Winchester, Va and a member of the Daughters of God Organization.

Mrs. Long was married to Noah R. Long on May 17, 1975 in Winchester, VA. Mr. Long died on April 4, 1985.

Surviving is one son: Curtis Walker and wife Denise of Harrisonburg, Va. Three brothers: Floyd Walker of Winchester, Joe Ray Walker of Tea Neck, NJ; Danny Walker of Winchester, Va; two sisters: Anna Mae Curry of Winchester, Va; Joan Jenkins of Sacramento, Ca. and two grandchildren: Kendra Walker Knight & Damien Walker.

She is preceded in death by three brothers: William, Jimmy and Samuel Walker and one sister, Helen Louise Walker.

A celebration of Betty’s life was held at the Supreme Council of the House of Jacob, 1420 Redbud Rd., Winchester, Va on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017 at 11 a.m. Pr. Elder David Thomas III officiated. The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Russell A. Miller

Russell "Russ" A. Miller, 85, of Frederick County, Virginia, died Monday, Jan. 9, 2017 at the Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Miller was born in 1931 in Winchester, Virginia, the son of the late Russell A. Miller and Pearl M. Lake and stepson of the late Alfred Lake.

He was a graduate of Strasburg High School, Class of 1948, and a Veteran having served in the United States Air Force from 1951-1955.

Mr. Miller was an installer for C&P Telephone Company until his retirement in 1985.

He was a past President of the local C&P Union, member of the Judicial Watch, volunteered for a number of years with the local food bank, and enjoyed bowling.

Mr. Miller was of the Methodist faith.

Mr. Miller married Pauline Conrad on Nov. 12, 1949 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Surviving with his wife are daughter, Vicki Strong (Edward) of Alabama; son, Grayson Miller (Loretta) of Pennsylvania; brothers, Preston Miller (Randy) of Virginia and Kyle Miller (Ruth) of Lynchburg, Virginia; grandchildren, Rosie Fletcher (William) of Inwood, West Virginia, Heather Perez (Salvador) of Inwood, West Virginia, Holly Perez (Micky) of Inwood, West Virginia, Walter Strong of Georgia, and Jennifer Strong of Georgia; nine great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Mr. Miller was preceded in death by daughter, Terry Dill; son-in-law, Harry Dill; and brother, Grayson Miller.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Street.

Larry A. Racey

Larry Allen Racey, 75 of Woodstock, died Friday, Jan. 6, 2017 at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital in Woodstock.

Mr. Racey was born June 27, 1941 in St. Luke, son of the late Katherine G. Racey Orndorff.

He was a charter member of the Woodstock Moose Lodge # 575.

He was a member of Saint Luke Brethren Church.

Mr. Racey is survived by his wife, Carolyn Hottel Racey, whom he married June 25, 1961.
 Also surviving are a daughter, Sharon M. Hollar of Edinburg; a son, Steven Edward Racey (Ann) of Woodstock; a half-sister, Anna Ruffner; a half- brother, Ray Orndorff; six grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gary Allen Racey.

A graveside service will be at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Woodstock Volunteer Fire Department.

Mary H. Swann

Mary Charlotte Holtzman Swann, 97, of Woodstock, passed away Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017 at Skyline Terrace Nursing Home in Woodstock.

A graveside service will be held Friday, Jan. 13 at 11 a.m. in Cedarwood Cemetery in Edinburg. Pastor Peter Mitchell will officiate.

Mrs. Swann was born Sept. 8, 1919 in Shenandoah County, daughter of the late Chester W. Holtzman and Clara Rudolph Hazard.

She was a retired beautician and a volunteer with the Clothes Closet.

She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Woodstock, Edinburg VFW Auxiliary and Woodstock American Legion Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin W. Swann Sr. and sister, Joanne S. McKinley.

She is survived by three children, Benjamin W. Swann Jr. and wife Kathy of Richmond, Bonnie Swann Painter and husband Frank of Edinburg and Brian R. Swann and wife Rita of Richmond; eight grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.

The family received friends Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Valley Funeral Service in Bowman's Crossing.

In lieu of flowers, contribution may be made to St. Paul's United Church of Christ Kitchen Fund, 235 S. Main St., Woodstock, Virginia 22664.

Paul E. Wood

Paul Edward Wood, 77, of Edinburg, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017 at his home.

Woody was born Sept. 22, 1939 in Altoona, Pa., son of the late Paul David and Catherine Ruth Beegle Wood.

He served in the United States Air Force.
Woody was a self-employed artist.

He was a member of St. John Bosco Roman Catholic Church in Woodstock.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Ann Wood, whom he married Aug. 12, 1961.

Also surviving are two daughters, Theresa Kemp of Leesburg and Louise LaClair of Waynesboro; a son, Paul Wood of Leesburg; two sisters, Mary Keller of Deland, Fl. and Dorothy Wachter of Altoona, Pa; five grandchildren, Curtis, Jenny, Michell, Melissa and Robbie; and two great grandchildren, Andre and Livie.

He was preceded in death by a son, Wayne A. Wood.

A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017 at 11 a.m. at St. John Bosco Catholic Church in Woodstock by Father Michael Dobbins.
