John F. Bowman


John Franklin "J.B." Bowman, 78, of Maurertown, passed away Saturday, March 4, 2017 in Thomasville, NC.


The funeral will be held Friday, March 10 at 11 a.m. at Valley Funeral Service in Bowmans Crossing. Pastor Joe Fleming will officiate. Burial will follow in Sunset View Memorial Gardens in Woodstock.


Mr. Bowman was born Aug. 3, 1938 in Shenandoah County, son of the late Joseph Fred and Hazel Marie Epard Bowman.


He worked at Bausermans Transfer for 42 years and loved driving his truck and hauling cattle.


He was preceded in death by a brother, Chester Bowman and sister, Eva Marie Bowman.


He is survived by daughter, Teresa Land of Thomasville, NC; son, Greg Bowman and wife Shelly of Maurertown; brothers and sister, Harold Bowman of Fulks Run, Raymond Bowman and wife Earline of Woodstock, Earl-Lee Bowman and wife Frances of Maurertown, Virginia Stultz and husband Steve of Woodstock, Sammy Bowman and wife Jeannie of Maurertown; five grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.


Pallbearers will be Roger Hockman, Scott Stickley, Cecil Miller, Stanley Miller, Bennie Beeler, Arlen Malone and William "Willie" Reedy.
 Honorary pallbearers will be drivers from former Bausermans Transfer.


The family received friends Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Jewel H. Brice


Jewel H. Brice, "Julie", 88, passed away Thursday, March 2 at her residence in Basye, Va.


Julie was born in Washington, DC July 3rd, 1928, daughter of the late Ben and Alma Rose Hayes of Congress Heights.


She was a graduate of Anacostia High School and attended George Washington University.


As a young girl, she spent several summers at Bryce's Hillside Cottages, in Basye, VA, - first as a guest and later as a waitress. There she met her future husband, Paul "Pete" Bryce. They later developed the Resort from a summer destination, to a four season recreation center, Bryce Resort.


She is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years and her grandson, John. 


Survivors include a son, Tom Brice and wife, Yancy; three daughters, Lee Ann Brice, Ellen Brice and Mary Rust and husband, John Rust; three grandsons; and four great grandchildren.


Julie was an avid gardener, floral designer, quilter, weaver, and lover of four legged creatures.


Julie cherished dearly her family, many friends and community.


Burial will be private.

Robert L. Butler


Robert Lee "Bobby" Butler, 61, of Woodstock and formerly of Front Royal, passed away on Monday, Feb. 27, 2017, at the Winchester Medical Center.


A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 11 at 3 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home conducted by Sammy Campbell.


Bobby was born on Jan. 21, 1956, in Front Royal, son of the late James E. Butler, Sr. and Cora Leigh Beatty Butler.


He owned and operated his own building contracting business for many years. He was a member of the Front Royal Moose Lodge # 829, the Front Royal Fraternal Order of Eagles, and the Giles B. Cook Post 53 of the American Legion.


Surviving are five daughters, Tori Butler, Caitlin Butler, Amber McCauley, Morgan Butler, and Chelsey Butler, all of Front Royal; one son, Brian McCauley of Front Royal; one brother, James E. “Boy” Butler, Jr. of Lovettsville; one sister, Carolyn Bolton of Front Royal; four grandsons; and his companion Elise Conforte of Woodstock.


Bobby was preceded in death by a daughter, Jenna Butler; and two sisters, Brenda Butler and Judy Brookman.


The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 11 from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

Gyneth G. Dellinger


Gyneth Genevieve "Genny" Dellinger, 89, of Edinburg, passed away Saturday, March 4, 2017 at her home.


The funeral service was held Tuesday, March 7 at 2 p.m. at Valley Funeral Service in Bowman's Crossing. Pastor Shelvie Mantz officiated. Burial followed in Cedarwood Cemetery in Edinburg. The family received friends one hour prior to the service.


Mrs. Dellinger was born Aug. 4, 1927 in Woodstock, daughter of the late Landon Lee and Clemence Irene McInturff Nicholson.


She formerly worked at Windsor Knit and retired as co-owner of Edinburg Gulf.


She was a member of Palmyra Church of the Brethren and Edinburg VFW Aux.


She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Lee Munch; and four brothers, Ralph, Irskel, Alfred and Quinten Nicholson.


She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Clyde Calvin "Tim" Dellinger, whom she married on Jan. 26, 1946; daughter, Deborah Irene Dellinger and husband, Steve Parsons of Fort Valley; sister, Jean Short of Edinburg; brother, Stanley Nicholson of Toms Brook; four grandchildren, Tom Parsons, Steve May, Trent May and Wendy Rigsby; seven great grandchildren; and six great great grandchildren.


Pallbearers were Tom Parsons, Steve May, Trent May, Trenty May, Galen Fadeley and Timmy Reedy. 
Honorary pallbearer will be Reverend Everett Burner.

Betty A. Ellis


Betty Burke Arbogast Ellis, 80, a resident of Toms Brook, Va., passed away Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017 at her residence.


A graveside service for Mrs. Ellis was conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, March 3, 2017 in Bennett's Chapel Cemetery, 839 Rivermont Drive, Front Royal, Va. 22630.


She was born in Strasburg, Va. on Aug. 31, 1936, a daughter of the late John Robert and Vesta Virginia Rinker Burke.


In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Donald A. Arbogast Sr.; second husband, Donald Frank Ellis; a grandson, Brian W. Arbogast; and siblings, John A. Burke, Orville Racey and John Robert Burke Jr.


Survivors include her children, Donald A. Arbogast Jr. and wife Jane of Slanesville, WV, Mark W. Arbogast and late wife Cathy of Toms Brook, Va., David Lee Arbogast and wife Terri of Toms Brook, Va., Christine H. Arbogast Stickles and husband Richard of Toms Brook, Va. and Sarah "Sally" Ellis Donovan of Stafford, Va.; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren; and one sister, Vanessa Burke of Strasburg, Va.

Wayne A. Hottle


Wayne Allen Hottle, 62, of Edinburg, passed away March 4, 2017 at his home.
Wayne was born on Dec. 16, 1954 .

Wayne was a resident of Edinburg, Virginia at the time of his passing.

He was an army veteran and formerly employed at Lowes.

Tawana I. Long


Tawana Ilene Long, 63, of Woodstock, passed away Sunday, March 5, 2017 at the Winchester Medical Center.


The funeral was held Thursday at 12 p.m. at the Valley Funeral Chapel in Bowmans Crossing. Pastor Steve Wood officiated.
 Burial will be private.


Mrs. Long was born Aug. 31, 1953 in Knoxville, Tn., daughter of the late John Henry Thomas Houser and Johnnie Mae Florence Williams Houser.


She formerly worked at the Express Mart in Woodstock.


She was preceded in death by a son, William Long and three brothers, Johnny, Joe and David Houser.


She is survived by her son, Greg Long of Woodstock; daughter, Alisha Long of Fort Valley; four sisters, Alice Miller of Colonial Beach, Jerry Cutler of Washington, NC, Joy McCann of Colonial Beach and Betty Chailastri of Taneytown, Md.; two brothers, Mickey Houser of Lanham, Md., and Ronnie Houser; and 10 grandchildren.


The family received friends one hour prior to the service.

Charles L. Palmer


Charles Lloyd Palmer, 78, of Staunton and formerly of Toms Brook, passed away Feb. 26, 2017 at Inova Fairfax Hospital, Fairfax.


A family burial service will be held at a later date.

Robert M. Parks


Robert M. Parks, of Hollywood, California, passed away at his home on Feb. 15, 2017.


He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Audrey Jones Parks, formerly of Edinburg.


In addition, he is survived by a son, John R. Parks of Hollywood; a daughter, Janet Huston of Sherwood, Oregon; three grandchildren, Rebecca Parks of Bend, Oregon and Hannah and Reed Huston of Sherwood; and a sister-in-law, Cleo Didawick of Edinburg.


A private memorial service will be held at a later date.



Beatrice J. Ritenour


Beatrice Johnson Ritenour, 98, a resident of Strasburg, Va., passed away Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017 at Skyline Terrace Nursing Home, Woodstock, Va.


A funeral service for Mrs. Ritenour was conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, March 6, 2017 at the Strasburg Christian Church with the Rev. Alfred Lawrence officiating. Burial followed in Detrick Cemetery, Fort Valley, Va.


She was born in Fort Valley, Va. on July 14, 1918, a daughter of the late Charles and Clara Cave Johnson.


Mrs. Ritenour retired from the Aileen Corp. in Woodstock, Va. with 30 years of service. After retiring she went to work at Hi Neighbor Restaurant in Strasburg, where she worked as a cashier for 20 years.


She was a member of the Trinity Brethren Church of Fort Valley where she taught Sunday School for many years and was a charter member of the Fort Valley Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.


In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Granville Ritenour Sr.; a son, Jacob G. Ritenour Jr.; and siblings, Clarence, Carson, William and Allen Johnson and Elsie Fravel.


Survivors include her children, Judith R. Troxell and husband Jackie of Strasburg, Va., Trudy Ritenour of Woodstock, Va. and Allan "Moe" Ritenour and wife Phyllis of Strasburg, Va.; nine grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and 11 great great grandchildren.


Pallbearers were grandsons, Anthony Wade Ritenour, Chad Lee Ritenour, Jacob Douglas Ritenour, Joshua David Ritenour, Christopher Loving and great granddaughter, Carrington Leigh Smith.
 Honorary pallbearers were granddaughters, Kelly Smith, Sheryl Stickles and Katie Ritenour.


The family received friends at Stover Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m.

Robert L. Ritenour Jr.


Robert L. Ritenour Jr., 84, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Riverside Hospital in Newport News, Virginia, surrounded by family.


Robert was born Feb. 8, 1933 in Woodstock, Virginia to Robert and Elaine Ritenour.


He was a 1952 graduate of Central High School in Woodstock.


Robert was a U.S Army veteran, proudly serving his country 21 years from 1953 until his retirement in 1974 as a Master Sergeant. A Korean War and two-time Vietnam War veteran, Robert was awarded the Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross, along with other medals and commendations, during his time of service.


After retiring from the Army, Robert continued serving his country as a civil servant and as a government contractor for Northrop Grumman, Beech Aerospace and Raytheon Aircraft at Ft. Eustis and Langley Air Force Base.


Robert was a resident of Newport News for over 50 years.


A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Robert was a role model for his children and grandchildren. Robert also enjoyed gardening, woodworking, photography, aviation history, auto racing, volunteering at the Ft. Eustis transportation museum and spending time with his family and friends.


Robert was a member of American Legion Post 199 in Woodstock, Virginia for 32 years.


Robert is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ruth Ritenour, whom he married on Dec. 24, 1952; daughter, Debra Ritenour of Newport News; son, Steven Ritenour and his wife Kathleen of Newport News; daughter, Becky Kinney and her husband Steve of Locust Grove, Virginia; five grandchildren, Amanda, Donnie, Cai, Kelly and Madison; five great-grandchildren, Savannah, Shelbie, Bearett, Beau and Bryce; brother, James and his wife Mary Ann of Millsboro, Delaware; sister, Virginia of Culpepper, Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews.


The family would like to thank the staff of the Riverside Health System for their compassion, respect and care while Robert was in their care.


A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 10, 2017 at Warwick Memorial United Methodist Church, 38 Hoopes Road, Newport News. There will be a reception immediately following the memorial service.

Beverly W. Rosenberger Sr.


Beverly Wayne Rosenberger Sr., 78, of Woodstock, passed away Saturday, March 4, 2017 at the Winchester Medical Center.


The funeral was held on Wednesday, March 8 at 11 a.m. at Valley Funeral Chapel in Bowmans Crossing. Pastors Darlene Wilkins and Lisa Coffelt officiated. Burial with military honors by the United States Marine Corps will follow in Sunset View Memorial Gardens in Woodstock.


Mr. Rosenberger was born Nov. 5, 1938 in New Market, son of the late Robert L. Rosenberger and Hannah Frances Clem Rosenberger.


He was a 1958 graduate of New Market High School and a United States Marine Corps veteran. He was formerly employed with John Manville for 27 years.


He was a member of Hawkinstown United Methodist Church, the Rockingham Bow Club and a NRA life member.


He is survived by his wife, Joanne Z. Rosenberger; two sons, Beverly Wayne Rosenberger Jr. and wife Misty of Maurertown and David Lee Rosenberger and wife Bobbi of Mt. Jackson; and five grandchildren, Ashley, Kendall, Madison, Camryn and Logan Rosenberger.


He was preceded in death by brothers and sister, Robert L. Rosenberger Jr., Charles Rosenberger, Arthur Benny" Rosenberger, Betty Green, Galen Rosenberger and James Foltz.  


Pallbearers were Clark Bauserman, Ted Lytton, Robert Neff, Ricky Green, Brandon Green and Phil Bauserman.

Larry R. Showalter


Larry Roger Showalter, of Southern Shores and originally from Orkney Springs, Va. passed away peacefully on Friday morning, March 3, 2017, at his home surrounded by his family.

Larry was born in Orkney Spring, Va. on March 22, 1939. He was the son of the late Frank Lee Showalter and Reba Moomaw.

Larry is survived by his wife, Babara Showalter, daughter and son-in-law, Kelley and Gene Griffith; and grandchildren, William and Riley Griffith.

Larry had a successful career working for the Central Intelligence Agency. He loved to travel the world, golf, hunt, fish, and root for the Green Bay Packers .

He will forever be in our thoughts and prayers. Plans for a local memorial are pending. A memorial service at Prince of Peace Church in Orkney Springs, Va. will be held Saturday March 25, 2017 at 11 am.

Dennis W. Wines, Sr.


Dennis W. "Denny" Wines, Sr., 67, of Front Royal, Va., passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at Warren Memorial Hospital.


A memorial service was held on Wednesday, March 8, at 4 p.m. at Grace Fellowship Church, 55 Westminster Dr., Front Royal. A reception was held at the church following the service.


Mr. Wines was born Dec. 3, 1949 in Front Royal, Va., son of the late Haywood Wines and Sybil Elizabeth Fox Wines.


He retired as a truck driver for G.E.I.


Mr. Wines was an avid hunter and enjoyed his antique cars. He never met a stranger and was willing to help anyone at anytime.


Surviving are his wife, Joan T. Wines of Front Royal; one son, Dennis W. Wines of Middletown, Va.; one daughter, Tracy Fincham and husband, Jeff of Toms Brook; one sister, Teresa Magalis and husband, Jeff of Front Royal; two step-brothers, Bobby Costello and Buster Costello; five grandchildren, Phillip Wines, Lacy Wines, Nathan Fincham, Cody Fincham, and Dillon Fincham; numerous great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces, Robert Moore, Charles Barbardo, and Cosmo Barbardo all of Front Royal, Angelo Barbardo of Germany, Angela McMillan of Greeley, Co., and Diana Brady of Charles Town, WV, Daniel Jacob Thompson of Arizona, Robert Pennington, Jr. of Front Royal, Jordan Magalis of Richmond, Va. and Kelsey Smith of Florida; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.


He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lorraine Wines Pennington Lichliter and Linda Wines Thompson; two nieces, Gertrude Anna Moore and Lisa Pennington Burke; and a stepmother, Frances Wines.
