Obituaries — Warren County


Mary M. Bean


Mary Margaret Baker Bean, 85, of Middletown, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016, at Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Bean was born in 1930, in Philadelphia, the daughter of the late Raymond and Irene Baker. She was a graduate of Little Flower High School in Philadelphia.

Mrs. Bean was a retired cashier for the City of Philadelphia Tax Department and a former cashier for Acme Markets.

Mary moved to Virginia from Assonet, Mass. in December 2009 to be close to her sister, Theresa.

She married Kenneth R. Bean on May 9, 1963, in Philadelphia. He preceded her in death in December 1985.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church with Father Brendan W. Bartlett, officiating. Interment will be private.

William B. Bell


William B. "Billy" Bell, 91, of Abingdon, died Wednesday, Jan.13, 2016, in the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.

A graveside service was held on Monday, Jan. 18, at Panorama Memorial Gardens, conducted by The Rev. Dr. R. Mark Jordon.

Mr. Bell was born July 30, 1924, in Roanoke, son of Bennett W. and Claudine Coffman Bell. He was married to the late Carrie ìDollyî Bell.

He was a retired purchasing agent for American Viscose/Avtex Fibers. He was a Warren County High School graduate and attended Bluefield College. He was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Army.

Surviving are two sons William B. ìBennyî Bell, III and David Lee Bell; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Bell was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard N. ìDickî Bell and James Robert ìBobbyî Bell.

Ralph L. Bennett Sr.


Ralph Leon Bennett Sr., 70, of Browntown, passed away in his home on Friday, Jan. 15, 2016.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, Jan. 19, at Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal, with Pastors Dale Ramsey and Jeff Fletcher officiating. Burial followed in Panorama Memorial Gardens.

He was born on June 30, 1945, son of the late Mildred Mae and Fred Jackson Bennett.

He was married to Dorothy Ann Bennett on May 27, 1966 They were married 49 years.

Surviving with his wife Dorothy Ann Bennett are his daughter, Veronica Ann Berg and her husband Pete; his son, Ralph Leon Bennett Jr.; his granddaughters Brandi Nashell Bennett, Kailynn Nicole Bennett, and Ana Valerie Bennett; his grandson Shawn T. Berg and his sister Helen Airhart.

He is also survived by his stepsister Mary Ann Rodgers, and his two stepbrothers, Jimmy and Charlie Bennett.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Aubrey ìBuckî Bennett and Harrison ìMuskyî Bennett; and his sisters Mary Ann Bennett and Nancy Aleshire.

Andrew Bodnaruk


Andrew Bodnaruk, 94, of Berryville, died Saturday, Jan.16, 2016 in Warren Memorial Hospital, Front Royal.

Capt. Bodnaruk was born Dec.20, 1921, in Chelsea, Mass., the son of the late Alex Bodnaruk and Anna Perepilitsa Bodnaruk.

Capt. Bodnaruk enjoyed a highly successful career in the U.S. Navy. After receiving an engineering degree from Tufts University, he began his naval career during World War II aboard the USS Mission Bay.

After his retirement from the U.S. Navy, he became President and Director of Stanwick International Corporation, an international marine engineering firm.

He married Ann Catherine Harrington in 1945 in Boston. Mrs. Bodnaruk died in 2003.

A devoted and loving husband and father, he leaves behind a daughter, Diane Bodnaruk-Kuenne of Hannover, Germany, and Berryville; and a sister, Lillian Bruni of Lynnfield, Mass.

A son, Paul Andrew Bodnaruk, preceded him in death.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 29, 2016, at St. Bridgetís Chapel in the Field, Berryville, with the Rev. Stanley J. Krempa officiating. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Winchester.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville.

Laura A. Denny


Laura Anne Denny of Edgehill, Front Royal, died Friday, Jan.15, 2016, from complications of pulmonary hypertension, surrounded at the time by her close friends.

Laura was born on Sept. 22, 1951, in Richmond. She was a daughter of the late Elizabeth P. and Joseph L. Denny.

She graduated from Warren County High School and was a member of the Class of 1969. She attended Westhampton College and then graduated from the Medical College of Virginia School of Pharmacy. She was a retired pharmacist. She also volunteered her time at numerous local charities that served the needy.

She was a devoted dog lover and was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and the Washington Redskins. She was known for her Redskin tailgate parties and her annual Fourth of July picnics. She also loved exploring Civil War Battlefields and was a ìdiggerî of Civil War relics.

She is survived by her sisters Keturah Neville (Joe) of Leesburg and Jane Levy (David) of Glen Allen; her nephews Joseph Neville, Brent Levy, and John Levy; and her niece Elizabeth Levy. She also leaves behind devoted friends Linda Allen, Micki McDonald, Mary Stuart Sayers, Suzanne Silek, David Silek, and Mary Ann Rankin, who cared for and loved her. In addition, she leaves behind her companion dogs who stood watch over her.

Visitation is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal. The funeral is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, 2016, at Calvary Episcopal Church.

Roger W. Fox


Roger William Fox, 63, of Front Royal, passed away on Friday, Jan.15, 2016, at his home.

Mr. Fox was born on Aug. 20, 1952 to the late Richard and Clara Fox in Front Royal and has been a lifetime resident of this area.

He was a retired ramp tower controller at Dulles Airport and a former police officer for the Town of Front Royal. He was also a member of the Front Royal Moose Lodge and the Limeton United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Carney Fox of Front Royal; three children, Richard Leland Fox of Front Royal, Kelly Jean Fox Hicks of Stephenson, and Ryan Wesley Fox of Front Royal; two stepchildren, John Robinson and Jaimie Robinson Bergstralh, both of Colorado; a sister, Sue McIntosh of Browntown, and 10 grandchildren.

A memorial service will is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016, at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 W. Main St., Front Royal. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service.

Patricia A. McDonald


Patricia Ann McDonald, 65, of Front Royal, passed away on Friday, Jan. 15, 2016 at Envoy of Winchester.

A funeral service was Tuesday, Jan.19, at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home with Pastor Moore officiating.

Mrs. McDonald was born Sept. 21, 1950, in Frederick, Md., a daughter of the late George and Helen Elsrode Hefner.

She was a custodian with General Dynamics and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister. She enjoyed housework and spending time with her family.

Mrs. McDonald is survived by her husband, Gary Wayne McDonald Sr.; her son, Gary Wayne McDonald Jr. of Culpeper; her daughter, Missy McDonald of Front Royal; her brothers, Harry and Ricky; her sisters, Barbie, Teresa and Terri Lynn; her grandchildren, David Allen Riley Jr., Christopher Michael Riley and Keith Dylan McDonald; and her great grandson, Braxton Kye Riley.



Gertrude V. Miller


Gertrude Virginia Miller, 81, of Riverton, passed away on Friday, Jan. 15, 2016, at her home.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, Jan. 20, at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dottie Holden officiating. Burial followed in Panorama Memorial Gardens.

Gertie was born in Martinsburg, W.Va., on July 4, 1934, a daughter of the late Oscar David and Lucy Mae Shores Fogle.

She had been a custodian for Riverton United Methodist Church for many years.

She enjoyed gardening, flowers, crocheting, family and cooking, especially family dinners at Thanksgiving and Christmas where everything was homemade.

Mrs. Miller is survived by her daughter, Delores Watkins and husband Daniel of Bentonville; her brother, Tommy Fogle of Riverton; her sister Betty Eackles of Buckton; her granddaughter, Wendy Hamilton; and her great grandchildren, Traeh Hamilton and Zander Hamilton.

Pallbearers were Ray Fogle, Ricky Fogle, Bennie Eackles, Raymond Fogle, David Fogle and Travis Hamilton.



Bruce R. Roberts Sr.


Bruce R. Roberts Sr., 53, of Bentonville, passed away on Friday, Jan. 15, 2016, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.

Mr. Roberts was born on May 16, 1962, in Leesburg to the late Willard and Marian Roberts and has been a lifetime resident of this area.

He did upholstery work for both home furnishings and automotive work.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Adrian Roberts.

Survivors include his son, Bruce Raymond Roberts Jr. of Strasburg; three brothers, Willard Roberts Jr. of Manassas, Charles Roberts of Front Royal, and James Roberts Sr. of Bentonville; two sisters, Rhonda Knotts of Bentonville and Rose Apple of Fairfax; two grandsons, Kristopher and Karson Roberts, both of Strasburg.

Nancy M. Wood


Nancy Marie Wood, 72, of Front Royal, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 14, 2016 at Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Wood was born on June 11, 1943, to the late Hencil and Lois Dodson. She was born in Sperryville and has been a lifetime resident of this area.

Mrs. Wood was a teacherís aide for Warren County Public Schools, volunteered at Winchester Medical Center and was a member of Marlow Heights Baptist Church, Front Royal.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne E. Wood.

Survivors include her daughter, Janice L. Wood; brother, Frank Dodson; five sisters, Margaret Strickler, Juanita Cather, Alice Partlowe (Ray), Frances Brown (Henley) and Vicki Michael (Joe) all of Front Royal.

A graveside service was held Monday, Jan. 18, at Shenandoah Memorial Park, Winchester.
