Patricia A. Derflinger


Patricia Ann Derflinger, 85, of Front Royal, passed away on March 30, 2016, in the Lynn Care Center in Front Royal.

A funeral service was held Saturday, April 2, at Maddox Funeral Home with Sammy Campbell who officiated. Interment followed in the Panorama Memorial Gardens at Waterlick.

Mrs. Derflinger was born on Aug. 13, 1930, in Martinsburg, WV, daughter of the late Lawrence C. Whittington and Goldie Ann Whittington.

Surviving are two daughters, Jean Baggarly and Linda Garber , both of Front Royal; four grandchildren, Charles Jenkins, Amanda Riley, Crystal Garber, and Todd Garber; six great-grandchildren, Dalton Jenkins, Rylee Jenkins, Cassandra Riley, Cory Norman, Elaina Garber and, Daisy Garber.

Pallbearers were Dalton Jenkins, Cory Norman, Charles Jenkins, Todd Garber, Crystal Garber, and Amanda Riley.

Arrangements were handled by Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal.



Maedine R. Gardiol


Maedine Rexrode Gardiol, 86, of Front Royal, passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2016, in the Warren Memorial Hospital.

A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, April 8, at Maddox Funeral Home with Pastor Danny Clegg and Sammy Campbell officiating. Interment will follow in the Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Gardiol was born on Feb. 22, 1930, in Brandywine, W.Va., daughter of the late Lon D. Rexrode and Mary Hazel Hedrick Rexrode. She retired from Boeing. She was very active in the Front Royal Fire Department and ladies Auxiliary and an extremely talented artist. Mrs. Gardiol was married to the late Pierre Bower Gardiol.

Surviving are a son, John O. Kaufman Jr. of Front Royal; one daughter, Mary E. Kibler of Front Royal; one sister, Shelby R. Bible of Franklin, W.Va.; five grandchildren, David Wade Kaufman, Jonathan Floyd Kaufman, Crystal Funk, Rhonda Thompsen, and Jason Kibler; nine great-grandchildren, Peyton, Brady, Corey, Colby, Nathan, Taylor, Autumn, Winter, and Summer; and her faithful companion Molly.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, David Kaufman, Jonathan Kaufman, Jason Kibler, Corey North, Colby North, and Nathan Thompsen.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Rebecca A. Hall


Rebecca Anne Hall, 49, of Front Royal, passed away on Saturday, April 2, 2016, in Winchester.

She was born on Feb. 3, 1967, in Baltimore, to Thomas W. Hall of Washington, D.C., and Gloria C. Hall (nee Little) of Glen Rock, Pa.

Rebecca worked in Information Technology for CACI International Inc. among other career accomplishments.

Becky is survived by her parents, her son, Daniel Hall of Dallas Town, Pa., and sister, Jennifer Phelan of Parkton, Md., as well as her fiancÈ, Thomas P. Tanis Jr. of Front Royal.

A memorial service in celebration of Beckyís life will be held at a later date.



Billy C. Howle


Mr. Billy Howle, 78, passed away suddenly on Saturday, April 2, 2016, at Conway Medical Center in Conway, S.C.

Local funeral services will be held at noon Friday, April 8, at Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal, with Sammy Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in the Washington Masonic Cemetery in Washington, Va.

Mr. Howle was born on Sept. 6, 1937, in Conway, the son of the late David Coker Howle and the late Lizzie Porter Howle. Billy was a 1954 graduate of Conway High School and received an associate degree from Anne Arundel Community College; Billy also attended the University of Maryland. He served six years in the U.S. Air Force before beginning his civilian career at the Department of Defense in Fort Meade, Md., retiring after 38 years of service. Billy was a member of First United Methodist Church of Conway.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Sue Slaughter Howle of Conway; his son, Jeffrey Howle (Sharon) of Millersville, Md.; his daughter, Victoria Howle (Kevin Long) of Lubbock, Texas; his grandchildren, Devin Howle DeLange (Steef), Grace Howle, Russell Long Howle, and Charlotte Long Howle; his brother, James ìJimmyî Howle (Phyllis); his nieces, Lisa Bledsoe, Cindy Looby, Stefanie Redwine, and their families, all from Amarillo, Tx; and many other beloved family members.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon Friday, April8, at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway chapel.

Local arrangements are being handled by Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal.



Michael W. Lewis


Michael Wayne Lewis, 59, of Front Royal, passed away on Tuesday, March 29, 2016, in his home.

A celebration of Wayneís life was held Friday, April 1, at Grace Fellowship Church of God, 55 Westminster Drive, Front Royal.

Wayne was born on Aug. 6, 1956, in Alexandria, son of Phyllis Ruth Hutson Edwards of Front Royal and the late Franklin Delano Roosevelt Lewis. Wayne was a U. S. Marine Corps veteran, having served from 1973 to 1975, when he received an honorable discharge due to medical reasons. Wayne was a mechanic with Sunoco until his retirement.

Surviving with his mother are his wife Crystal M. Lewis; one son Michael Wayne Lewis, II of Washington D.C.; three daughters, Brandi Lynn Lewis, Brittany Lee Lewis, and Rebecca Ann Martin all of Front Royal; two brothers, Razor Lewis and companion Patty Moon, and Mark Anthony Lewis both of Front Royal; mother-in-law, Wanda Lawson and companion Charlie Davis; brothers-in-law, Daniel, Eddie and Donnie Lawson; sisters-in-law, Denise Burke and Laverne Lawson; and many grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends, and family.

Wayne is also survived by his adopted children and grandchildren, whom he thought of as his own: Brittany Silvus, Destiny Vincent, Amber Funk, Olivia Funk, Tyler Funk, Lay Lay; and chocolate drop "Nana". He is also survived by his two faithful companions Bonnie and Precious Lewis.

Wayne was preceded in death by his father, step-father, brother, aunts, and uncles.

Helen M. Putman


Helen Miller Putman, 67, of Front Royal, passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2016 at her home.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home with Pastor William Shifflett officiating. Burial will follow in Panorama Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Putman was born in Clarke County on Oct. 12, 1948, a daughter of the late Edward and Mamie Miller.

She worked in the coning room at Avtex for 20 years, and later worked as a cashier for Costco.

She was a member of the Front Royal Church of God.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed her flower garden and spending time with her grandchildren.

Mrs. Putman is survived by her husband, Randolph ìTommyî Putman; her daughter, Jennifer Tusing and husband John of Maurertown; her brother, Charles Miller of Front Royal; her sisters, Mary Sechrist of Paris Mountain, Catherine Tisor of Illinois, Jessie Rutherford of Front Royal, Betty Williams of Reliance, Phyllis Hall of Strasburg and Gladys Grimes of Strasburg; her grandchildren, Brandon Tusing, Krissica Tusing, Brady Haden and wife Sabrina; her great granddaughter, Isabella Mae Haden; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Putman was preceded in death by her daughter, Misty Dawn Putman in 2015; her brothers, Ernest Miller and Jimmy Miller; and her sisters, Iva Thompson and Peggy Embry.

Pallbearers will be Brady Haden, Tony Rutherford, Randy Grimes, Edmund Miller, Alan Fleet, Derick Williams and Brian Williams.



William P. Supples Sr.


William P. Supples Sr., 71, of Front Royal, died on Tuesday, March 29, 2016, at his home, surrounded by his family.

The Rev. Jerome Fasano celebrated a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Front Royal on Tuesday, April 5. Burial was held at Quantico National Cemetery with military honors on Wednesday, April 6.

William was born Aug. 30, 1944, in Buffalo, N.Y., son of the late Thomas Vincent Supples and Lela Barnes Supples. He was a U.S. Navy veteran who served during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he joined the U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division and retired 30 years later as a sergeant. Mr. Supples was a member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy; eight children: Sarah, Christian, Gregory, Sean, Anna Katharine, William Jr., Matthew, and Brian; three sisters: MaryLee, Sheila and Patricia; one brother, Thomas; 25 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family received friends on Monday, April 4, at Maddox Funeral Home in Front Royal.



Gloria Sutton


Gloria "Chicken Woman" Sutton, 62, of Front Royal, passed away on Monday, March 28, 2016, at Warren Memorial Hospital in Front Royal.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 W. Main St., Front Royal, with Elder Franklin Roberts officiating. A visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Mrs. Sutton was born on Oct. 29, 1953 in Fauquier County to the late James Edward Walden and Josephine P. Bland Walden.

Survivors include her husband, Anthony H. Sutton Sr. of Front Royal; three brothers, Ralph Diggs of Richmond, Steven and Vincent Diggs, both of Front Royal; sister, Brenda Cecil of Front Royal; God daughters, Moneshea Diggs, Shakira Porter and Justize Silver all of Front Royal and a host of nieces and nephews.

Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Natt, Chuckie Lane, Mike Gibson, Jeff Hayley, Albert Gatewood and Richard Lane.

The family would like to thank all who have donated to Gloriaís homecoming and those that may like to donate may do so to Maddox Funeral Home.
