Edward W. Alexander III

After a courageous battle with cancer, Edward Walter Alexander III, of Front Royal, died on Wednesday, April 27, 2016, at the age of 64.

A funeral service was held Sunday, May 1, at Maddox Funeral Home, with Sammy Campbell officiating. Interment followed in the Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Eddie was born on Aug. 8, 1951, in Front Royal, son of the late Edward ìMuttî Alexander Jr. and Kathleen Wines Alexander.

He was a 1969 graduate of Warren County High School and a 1974 graduate of Virginia Tech. In 2007, he retired after 31 years with A&P Grocery Stores.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Tina D. Alexander; two children Amanda Nicholson (Trent) and Edward ìE.W.î Alexander, IV (Amy); two grandchildren, Natalie and Alexander Nicholson, all of Front Royal. Eddie is also survived by many cousins.

Pallbearers were Trent Nicholson, Herb Melrath, Paul Baker, Paul Dofermire, Jr. Chad Ramey and Jeffrey Grove.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 West Cork Street, Winchester, VA 22601.

Angela M. Burge-Bingaman

Angela Marie Burge-Bingaman, 45, of Winchester, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 1, 2016, surrounded by her loving family.

A visitation was held Wednesday, May 4, at Maddox Funeral Home in Front Royal.

Angie was born on June 16, 1970, in Houston, daughter of Russell Lee ìBobbyî Williams and the late Vivian Jean Armbrister Williams. She worked for Spring Arbor as a resident care coordinator assistant.

Surviving with her father are her loving fiancÈ Roger Bingaman of Winchester; one son, Nick Burge and wife Kirsten of Winchester; one daughter, Samantha Burge of Front Royal; one brother, Bobby Allen Williams and wife Pamela of Front Royal; one grandson Holden Charles Happel of Front Royal; a sister-in-law whom she thought of as a sister, Gina Bingaman of Inwood; and a mother-in-law whom she thought of as a mother, Dorothy Bingaman of Winchester.

Angie was preceded in death by her mother; one brother, Huelin Eugene Williams; and mother-in-law Virgie Frederick.

Ellis R. Johnson Jr.

Ellis Raymond "Ray" Johnson Jr., 69, of Front Royal, passed away Wednesday, April 27, 2016, at Winchester Medical Center.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, with the Rev. Larry Johnson officiating.

Mr. Johnson was born in Buchanan on June 23, 1946, a son of the late Ellis Raymond and Mary Katherine Coxton Johnson.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife of 45 years, Shirley Brinegar Johnson; his daughters, Kathy Ann White and husband Lee of Winchester and Tara Kelley and husband Rob of Wardensville, W.Va.; his brothers, Howard Estle Johnson, Charles Mark Johnson and Jeff Allen Johnson, all of Front Royal and Jason Johnson of Manassas; his sisters, Juanita Smith of Manassas and Betty Stiltner of Bristol; and his grandsons, Brandon White and Hunter White.

Hazel A. Lupton

Hazel Andrews Lupton, 84, of Front Royal, passed away at home on hospice care surrounded by her family on Thursday, April 28, 2016.

A funeral service was held Monday, May 2, at Maddox Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Dottie Holden. Burial will follow in Bennettís Chapel Cemetery.

Mrs. Lupton was born March 16, 1932, in Warren County, daughter of the late Harry Lee and Barbara Jane Andrews. She married her husband Maynard Bayliss Lupton on April 27, 1953, having just celebrated their 63rd anniversary. She was a member of AARP and she and her husband were both active in the Warren County Senior Center.

Surviving with her husband are two sons, Arthur Ray Lupton and David Lynn Lupton.

Pallbearers were Alvin McDonald, Delmar Lineweaver, Bobby Esteppe, George Lupton, Wayne Sealock, Steve Evans and Dennis Grove.

Honorary pallbearers were Calvin Duncan, Michael Dauria, Bob Castle and Barry Neighbors.

Jerry L. Mathews

Jerry Lee Mathews, 58, of Bentonville, passed away on Monday, May 2, 2016, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 6, at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 W. Main St., Front Royal, with burial to follow at Panorama Memorial Gardens, Strasburg Road.

Jerry was born Feb. 27, 1958, in his family home to the late William Oswald Mathews and Pauline Corbin Mathews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by four brothers, Bill, Ray, Preston, Elmer Lee and by two sisters, Joyce and Louise.

He was a 1977 graduate of Warren County High School. He enjoyed hunting, was a NASCAR fan and an avid outdoorsman.

Survivors include his son, Cody R. Mathews and fiancÈe Jessica Riley of Bentonville; daughter, Shalee O. Mathews of Front Royal; two brothers, Allen Mathews and Wayne Mathews, both of Bentonville; six sisters, Connie Grim of Winchester, Barbara Smelser, Mary Lou Stoneberger and Martha ìSueî Henry, all of Bentonville, Ann Jenkins and Linda McDonald, both of Front Royal; two grandchildren, Dawson Lee Leatherman and Brooklyn Paige Mathews; many nieces and nephews and many special friends.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Joseph (Sweetie) Stoneberger, Gregory Mathews, Rod Mathews, Brian Woddell, Jay Lamb, Matthew (Hoss) Sharp and David Riley Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Mathews Sr., Clyde Burkhart, Sam Lamb, Darrell Mathews and Larry Mathews Jr.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to SONA Bank in memory of Jerry Mathews.

Mary I. Whetzel

Mary Isabel Whetzel, 94, of New Market, peacefully passed from this Earth on Friday, April 29, 2016, at Sentara RMH Medical Center in Harrisonburg.

She was born May 22, 1921, in Fort Valley, daughter of the late Claude McKinley Cave and Hattie Bell Dinges Cave Phillips.

She had worked at New Market Aileen Inc. for 29 years prior to her retirement. Mrs. Whetzel was a member of Front Royal Church of the Brethren and when health permitted, attended Valley Central Church in New Market.

She was married March 10, 1942, to Charles Alden Whetzel, who preceded her in death March 4, 1994.

She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Elizabeth Diann Whetzel; sisters, Louise and "Teetie" Elva Mae; and a special sister, Gladys.

She is survived by three sons, Claude "Joe" Whetzel and wife, Linda, Pastor Bobby W. Whetzel and wife, Pastor Diann, Alden "Augie" Whetzel and wife, Marie; grandchildren, Bryan and wife, Leslie, Sherrie and husband, Michael, Laurie and husband, Frank, Brett and wife, Tammy, Amanda, Amber, Megan, and Jeffrey; great-grandchildren, Kyle, Alicia, Rowen, Elie, Kainen, Hunter, Kristen, Nathaniel, Maddie, Lily and Alana; great-great-grandchildren, Aldon, Jade and Sariah. Also surviving is a special caregiver, Tammy Jenkins.

A funeral service was held Tuesday at Dellinger Funeral Home in Mount Jackson, with Pastors Hardy Lutz and Diann Whetzel officiating. Burial followed at Massanutten Cemetery in Woodstock.

Pallbearers were her grandchildren and Ronnie Markley.
