Norma H. Childers


Norma Hollis Childers, 95, of Front Royal, passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at Commonwealth of Front Royal.

An inurnment will take place at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.

Mrs. Childers was born in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 9, 1920, a daughter of the late Joseph and Naomi Daniels Hollis.

She was a dairy farmer in Georgia along with her husband for many years.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing the piano, gardening, and cooking. She was Baptist by faith.

Mrs. Childers is survived by her nephew, Robert Bloyer of Front Royal and her niece, Norma Martin of Delaware.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Childers was preceded in death by her husband, Troy M. Childers in 2005; and her 11 brothers and sisters.

Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.



Daniel L. McCarty


Daniel Lee McCarty, 63, died peacefully on May 28, 2016.

Dan, a lifelong resident of Front Royal, will always be remembered as a vibrant man whose compassion and loyalty were immeasurable as was his love for his family and friends. †

Dan was born in 1953 and grew up on West Main Street in Front Royal. He attended school at Mercersburg Academy and graduated from Warren County High School.†After retiring from his plumbing business, Dan enjoyed his family, friends, dogs, and watching NASCAR and NFL with his close friends on the weekends.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Dennis P. McCarty.

Dan is survived by his brothers, Douglas Neal McCarty of Ashton, Md., Dennis Page McCarty and wife Julie of Delaplane and Donald Jay McCarty and wife Josie of Clifton.

Dan adored his nieces and nephews, Christopher McCarty of Atlanta, Jesse McCarty of Fairfax, Alexis McCarty of Blacksburg, Elizabeth McCarty of Delaplane, James McCarty of Clifton, and Jessica McCarty of Ashton, Md.†He also is survived by a multitude of cousins and friends, all of whom will remember him as an outspoken and compassionate man with strong beliefs and convictions.

Family always came first with Dan and many of his friends were considered family as well.†For those who knew him best, he was an enigmatic character that never failed to entertain and sometimes provoke us out of our comfort zones. We loved him, as he did us, and he will be missed dearly. ††††

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 18, at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 9668 Maidstone Road, Delaplane. The family is requesting everyone come to the service dressed casually and comfortably, as Dan would have wanted.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Danís name to Emmanuel Episcopal Church, PO Box 126, Delaplane, VA 20144.

Helen T. Royall


Helen Turner Royall, formerly of Front Royal, passed away Sunday, June 5, 2016, at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro, N.C., after a five-year decline in health.

Mrs. Royall was born March 30, 1929, in Front Royal, the daughter of the late Raymond P. Turner and Anna Wilkison Turner. She was a member of The Front Royal United Methodist Church and the wife of the late Henry H. Royall.

Surviving are two daughters, Joan R. Johnson and husband Don, and Marylou R. Baugher and husband Randy, all of Danville. Also surviving are two brothers, Raymond P. Turner Jr., of Cumberland, and Robert L. Turner of Naples, Fla.; four grandchildren, Allison Spilman and husband Dain, Amanda Kiely and husband Matt, Christopher Baugher and wife Kelsey, and Courtney Baugher; and three great-grandchildren, Savannah, Sara, and Caroline.

Funeral services will be private. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Joan Johnson, 120 Adobe Court, Danville.

Sara T. Warren


On May 27, 2016, Sara Warren, "Aunt Sara," passed at Overlook in Warrenton, at age 95. She was born Sara Wilkins McCarty on July 30, 1920, at Woodside Farm in historic Fauquier County.

Sara married Delmer Lee "Tommy" Thompson, a bacteriologist in 1948 in Washington, D.C. They had a daughter, Mary. He passed in February 1953. Sara returned home to Fauquier County and became Marshall High Schoolís librarian. In October 1954, she married her childhood friend James Morris Warren, postmaster of Delaplane.

Sara worked part-time as a medical technologist at Warren Memorial Hospital; then as bookkeeper at The Delaplane Store.

Sara was preceded in death by her parents, Richard Henry McCarty Sr. and Edith; her husbands, D.L. Thompson and James Warren; her brothers and their wives, Dr. Dennis Parfrement McCarty and Dorothy and Richard Henry McCarty Jr. and Margaret. Saraís nephew Daniel Lee McCarty died May 28, 2016.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Thompson; her cousins, Stuart McCarty Martin of Frederick County; and John Daniel McCarty and wife Ann of Fauquier County. She also is survived by her nieces and nephews, Margaret May of Indiana, Jane Grove and her husband Howard of Fauquier County, Richard Henry of McCarty III and wife Florence of Fauquier County, Sarah Hazel and husband Doug of Warren County, Douglas Neal McCarty of Maryland, Dennis Page McCarty and wife Julie of Fauquier County, and Donald Jay McCarty and wife Josie of Fairfax County; plus two more generations.

Her memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 9668 Maidstone Road, Delaplane. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The McCarty Scholarship Fund c/o Emmanuel Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 126, Delaplane, VA 20144.

Melvin L. Wright Sr.


Melvin L. Wright Sr. of Front Royal, passed away on Sunday, June 5, 2016 at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 13, at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 W. Main St., with the Rev. Bradley F. Thorne officiating. Burial will follow at Stonewall Memory Gardens, Manassas, with military honors.

He was born on Dec. 16, 1945, in Delaplane, to the late Pershing and Elizabeth Wright and was a lifetime resident of Northern Virginia.

Mr. Wright was a tree expert with Asplundh Tree Services, a U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran, an avid trout fisherman and pool player.

Survivors include his three daughters, Sherry D. Braithwaite of Front Royal, Angela Tiller of Hedgesville, W.Va., Brandy L. Brown of Front Royal; two sons, Melvin L. Wright Jr. of Warrenton, and James Alan Wright of Front Royal; two sisters, Pauline Wright of Stephenson, Daisy Wright of Romney, W.Va.; three brothers, Randy Wright of Stephenson, Allen Baker of Chantilly and Ronnie L. Wright of Remington; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Bobby L. Hicks, James A. Wright Jr., Berry D. Smith Jr., David Zinn, Randle Wright and J.E. Wright.
