Ruth A. Burke


Ruth Ann Burke, 75, of Huntly, passed away on Sunday, July 31, 2016, at Warren Memorial Hospital in Front Royal.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. today at Flint Hill Pentecostal Church with Pastor Bobby Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Flint Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Burke was born on July 7, 1941, at her home in Rappahannock County to James B. and Colleen Foster.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Edward Garfield Burke II, and her sister, Rena Mae Atkins.

She worked for the Aileen Sewing Factory for 22 years and was a member of Flint Hill Pentecostal Church.

Survivors include her son, Edward Garfield Burke III (Lisa); two daughters, Carol Ann Nicholson and Rebecca Lynn Foreback; six siblings, Mildred Riley, James Foster, Marie Woodard, Elzora Nicholson, Margaret Settle and Irene Fletcher; six grandchildren, Shanna Nicholson, Zachary Gunter, Jennifer Foreback, Samantha Foreback, Brittany Burke and Edward Garfield Burke IV and six great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Sam Foreback, Wayne Burke, Bill Burke, Mike Atkins, Ronnie Atkins, Jonathan Fletcher, James Fletcher and Stewart Settle. Honorary Pallbearers will be Mike Williams, Elvis Foster, Chuck Riley, Mark Steele and Donald Steele.

Aubrey W. Darr


Aubrey Wilson Darr, 83, of Front Royal, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 31, 2016, in his home surrounded by his loving family.

A graveside service was held Wednesday, Aug. 3, at Prospect Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Bill Pearson officiating.

Mr. Darr was born on Oct. 4, 1932 in Baltimore, son of Irvin Jackson Darr and Laura May Sealock Darr.

He worked many years as a superintendent and carpenter in the construction field. He was married to Norma Carolyn Kines Darr.

Along with his parents and wife, Mr. Darr was preceded in death by one daughter, Melanie Darr; three brothers; and one sister.

Surviving are his ìBabeî Anna Ardinger of Front Royal; three daughters, Deborah Jones, Crystal Chrisman and husband Mick, and Jacquelyn Critzer and husband Sam, all of Front Royal; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Marcelle Green


Marcelle Green, 91, of Front Royal, and formerly of Falls Church, passed away on Sunday, July 31, 2016, at Loving Arms Assisted Living.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 8, 2016, in Quantico National Cemetery conducted by Father John Alderson.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7 at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 W. Main St., Front Royal.

Mrs. Green was born Aug. 23, 1924, in French Morocco, daughter of Prospero Benghouzi and Emily Pinto Benghouzi. She immigrated to this country in December 1946 to marry William Chester Green. They met in Casablanca during World War II while Lt. Green was stationed there and she was working in the U.S. Army office as a bilingual secretary. They were married for 60 years until Mr. Green's death on June 1, 2006.

Surviving are her loving children, Ward W. Green (Linda) of Charlotte, N.C., Claire G. Brandon (David) of Front Royal and Randall S. Green of Richmond; and her grandchildren, Jennifer, Wesley and Marcelle.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to any of the following organizations: the Parkinson's Foundation, Leukemia Foundation, Diabetes Foundation or the Scleroderma Foundation.



Ireta C. Hallman


Ireta Carol Hallman, our beloved Mother, went to the Lord peacefully at her home on July 18, 2016.

A Celebration of Life was held July 22, 2016, at the Front Royal Moose Lodge, conducted by the Rev. James Boyette.

Mrs. Hallman was born on June 25, 1937, in Dawson, W.Va., the daughter of Sherley and Mollie Anderson.

She was retired from the Winchester Medical Center and Warren Memorial Hospital. She was very active in her church.

She was a rare and special person who touched everyoneís life she came across. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Surviving are her five children, Beverly Hallman Augustine (husband John), Bill Hallman, Ben Hallman (wife Selena), Mindy Hallman (Dwayne Mauck) and Bobby Hallman (wife Sarah); a brother, Cleveland Anderson; two sisters-in-law, Judy Anderson and Charlotte Partlow (husband Giles); nine grandchildren, Jeanette, Willie (wife Tabitha), Jan, Jill, Jaclyn, Devin (husband Michael), Mollee, Samantha and Daniel; and 17 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 58 years, Daniel B. Hallman; a daughter, Carolyn D. Hallman; a sister, Shelby Sealock; and a granddaughter, Jennifer A. Hallman.

James W. Hensley


James Woodrow "Woody" Hensley, 70, of Shenandoah, passed away Saturday, July 23, 2016, at the University of Virginia Transitional Care Hospital in Charlottesville.

He was born Nov. 11, 1945, in Rockingham County, and was a son of Ted and Pearl Knighten Hensley.

He was a welder for Greenwood Construction in Elkton and Fluor Construction (DuPont) in Front Royal before his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Surviving are three sons, Preston Hensley of McGaheysville, and Kenny Hensley and Charles Hensley, both of Elkton; daughters, Carla Morse of Elkton and Jeanne Hensley of Shenandoah; a brother, Teddy Hensley Jr. of Penn Laird; a sister, Kathy Barkdoll of Bel Air, Md.; five grandchildren; and his former wife, Janet Lam Hensley.

A memorial gathering was held Saturday, July 30, at Stonewall Memorial Parkís Monger Shelter in Elkton. Burial was private.



Karen K. Hudson


Karen Kephart Hudson, 65, of Browntown, passed away on Tuesday, July 26, 2016, in the Winchester Medical Center.

A graveside service was held Friday, July 29, at Prospect Hill Cemetery, with Sammy Campbell officiating.

Karen was born on July 26, 1951, in Washington, D.C., daughter of the late Lawrence Lee Kephart Jr. and Bonnie Kephart Fox.

Karen was a 1970 graduate of Warren County High School. She was still employed with the Warren County School system, where she drove a bus for 22 years and worked with the special needs children through the school system for 16 years. She was a member of the Women of the Moose Chapter No. 1194. Karen was a friend to all and will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Surviving are her husband of 43 years, Dennis O. ìDennyî Hudson; daughter Sarah Hudson of Front Royal; son Brian Hudson and his fiancÈe Mary Jo of Front Royal; two grandchildren Kayla Hudson and McKalyn Hudson; a very dear cousin, Jim Butler; one brother and one sister.

Marie F. Vermillion


Marie Frances Vermillion, 93, of Stephens City, formerly of Front Royal, passed away on Monday, Aug. 1, 2016, at Amerisist in Stephens City.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Maddox Funeral Home in Front Royal, conducted by the Rev. James Baseler. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery in Strasburg.

Mrs. Vermillion was born Nov. 25, 1922, in Hagerstown, Md., daughter of Robert and Beulah Bowers Fisher. She was married to the late James M. Vermillion Sr.

Mrs. Vermillion retired from the Central Intelligence Agency after 24 years of service. She was a longtime member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Front Royal.

Surviving are two sons, James M. Vermillion Jr. of Stephens City and his wife Anne and Jerry A. Vermillion of Strasburg and his wife Mary; daughter Linda Launders of Woodstock; brother John Fisher of Stuarts Draft; son-in-law Albert Felicio Sr. of Winchester; six grandchildren, Melissa Taylor, Daniel Vermillion, Jerry Vermillion Jr., Kimberly Harwood, Douglas Ramos Jr., and Marci Ramos; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter JoAnn V. Felicio; three brothers; two sisters; and a granddaughter.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers will be Joseph Darr, Ronald Darr, and Douglas Ramos Sr.

The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Helen F. Wilhite


Helen Fritts Wilhite, 85, of Annandale, passed away Aug. 1, 2016 at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5, 2016, at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, with the Rev. Kevin Havens officiating. Burial will follow at Prospect Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service.

Mrs. Wilhite was born in Warren County on Dec. 16, 1930, to Howard and Lillian Simmons Fritts and grew up on the family farm in Front Royal. She was retired from Castleburg's jewelry store. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and sister, reserving a special place in her heart for her grandsons.

Mrs. Wilhite is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin and Elva Wilhite of Richmond, and Keith and Diane Wilhite of Chantilly; her stepdaughter Martha Lou Shevett; her stepsons, Barry Wilhite and Gary Wilhite; her brother, Wilson Fritts; her three grandsons, Darren Wilhite, Cory Wilhite and Jeffrey Wilhite; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Wilhite was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Herman Wilhite Jr.; her stepson, Ronnie Wilhite; her brothers, Richard Fritts, Terry Fritts, and Ralph Fritts; and her sisters, Edith Williams Fabretti and Mildred Jones.

Pallbearers will be Darren Wilhite, Cory Wilhite, Jeffrey Wilhite, Steve Williams, Bruce Williams and Gary Williams.

Dennis M. Windle


Dennis M. Windle, 55, of Front Royal, passed away on Wednesday, July 27, 2016, at his home.

Graveside services took place Tuesday, Aug. 2, at Panorama Memorial Gardens, 4917 Strasburg Road, with Sammy Campbell officiating.

Mr. Windle was born on Aug. 12, 1960, in Winchester, to Wray Windle and Ann Haymaker Windle. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Barr Windle.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a former supervisor for Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative.

Survivors include his daughters, Kayla Martin and Brittany Landreth, both of Dublin; his brother, Kevin Windle of Springfield; four grandsons, Jonathan, Ryan, Dallas and Alex as well as one grandchild on the way.
