Martha B. Appleton


Martha Boyer Appleton, 92, of Strasburg, passed away Thursday, Dec. 1, 2016, at the University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville.

She was born on Feb. 6, 1924, a daughter of Charles Lee and Louisa Fontaine Cooley Keeler.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, Warren Crawford Boyer; her late husband, Beverly D. Appleton; son Charles William Boyer; one stepchild; two grandchildren; and three siblings.

Survivors include her children, Patricia Bucher of Strasburg, Ann Hoover of Edinburg, Connie Pangle of Strasburg and Sue Brinkman of Texas; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and three stepchildren.

A funeral service for Mrs. Appleton was conducted Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016, with the Rev. Richard McDowell officiating. Burial was private.

Joyce A. Carper


Joyce A. Carper, of Front Royal, passed away Dec. 5, 2016, at her home.

Mrs. Carper was born Feb. 27, 1946 in Winchester, daughter of Cletus Franklin Lake and Goldie Mae Lake. She was married to Charles Robert Carper.

Surviving are three children, David Edwin Funk of Fort Valley, Catherine Mae Funk of Front Royal, and Bruce Lee Funk of Forestville, Md.; sisters Ann Plauger of Strasburg and Nina Fake and husband Harry of Palm Harbor, Fla.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 W. Main St. Burial will be private.



F. Virginia Dawson


F. Virginia Dawson, 97, of Front Royal, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016, in the Warren Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Dawson was born Oct. 6, 1919, in Bentonville, daughter of James Milton Jenkins and Julia Ann Curry Jenkins. She was the last surviving member of 12 siblings.

She was married to the late George W. Dawson.

Surviving are her son, Richard Dawson of Chesterfield; daughter Patricia "Patty" Dawson Gallahon of King George; one foster daughter, Monica Lisa Cantrell of Winchester; five grandchildren; three foster grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 18 West 6th St., Front Royal. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, at the Culpeper National Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. C. Wayne Woodard and Elder Gary Utz officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the South Warren Volunteer Fire Department, 3330 Stonewall Jackson Hwy., Bentonville, VA 22610.

Arrangements are being handled by Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal.



Thomas E. Haas Jr.


Thomas Elbert "Tom Dad" Haas Jr., 62, of Strasburg, died Friday, Dec. 2, 2016, at home, surrounded by his family.

Mr. Haas was born in 1954 in Winchester, the son of Thomas E. and Joan P. Haas.

Mr. Haas married Tammy Sue Beale on March 17, 1989, in Winchester.

Surviving with his wife are daughters, Elizabeth S. Taylor of Strasburg and Tori D. Lynch of Stephens City; son, William L. Hayes of Stephens City; three grandchildren; sisters, Shelia Almond of Stephens City and Patti Williams of Winchester; brother Dennis M. Haas of Front Royal.

A funeral service was held Monday at Winchester Church of God, with Pastor Scott Orndorff officiating. Interment was private.

Memorial contributions in memory of ìTom Dadî may be made to American Cancer Society, 1833 Plaza Drive, Winchester, VA 22601.

Arrangements were handled by Omps Funeral Home, Winchester.



Mary J. Keller


Mary Jane Keller, 93, of Front Royal, passed away Friday, Dec. 2, 2016, at her residence.

Mrs. Keller was born on Nov. 6, 1923 in Mingo Junction, Ohio, to Arthur S. Maxwell and Daisy B. Sutherin Maxwell.

Funeral services will be held at a later date at Fort Myer Chapel, Arlington, with burial to follow in Arlington National Cemetery.

Survivors include her son, Howard W. Keller Jr. (Margaret); daughter, Nancy Keller Berlin (Jon); six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are being handled by Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal.



Forrest E. Magee


Forrest Elmer Magee, 91, of Front Royal, formerly of Charleston, S.C., died on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2016.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Lois G. West and second wife Pearl Owens Magee.

Surviving are four children, Lena Frances Hubbard of Bonneau, S.C., Mabel Whitley (Richard) of Front Royal, Forrest Eugene Magee of Hamlet, N.C., and Dorothy Ellen Magee of Bonneau; 11 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 9, 2016, at Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal. Inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery will be held at a later date.

Mr. Magee was born May 1, 1925, in Hollansburg, Ohio, son of Clemen Edgar Magee and Lena Francis Bell Magee.
