Obituaries — Warren County


Ruth B. Riker


Ruth Blackwell Riker, 84, of Front Royal, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, March 19, 2017.

Mrs. Riker was born on Oct. 16, 1932 in Collinsville, Ala., daughter of J.W. "Preacher Bill" Blackwell and Mazie Adams Blackwell.

Surviving is her husband, Edmund E. Riker Sr.; five children, Edmund E. Riker Jr., Blake Riker, Mark F. Riker, Sally Nobbs and Michael L. Riker Sr.; two brothers, Edward Blackwell and Truett Blackwell; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Riker was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 W. Main St. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 24, at the funeral home, conducted by Pastor Danny Clegg. Interment will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shenandoah Valley Oncology Building Fund or to the Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester, VA 22601.



Jean M. Duffield


Jean Morris Duffield, 85, of Strasburg, passed away Monday, March 13, 2017.

Jean was born in Strasburg on Feb. 22, 1932, a daughter of Wilber Webster and Anna Mary Airhart Morris. She was the wife of Robert Hugh Duffield.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two siblings, Betty Wright and Roger Morris.

Survivors include her children, Kerri D. Barnhouse of Madison, Ohio, and Tonya S. Duffield and Jennifer D. Cook, both of Strasburg; her two grandchildren; her siblings, Margaret E. Morris of Strasburg, Mildred Dawson of Venezuela and Mary Funk and Donald Morris, both of Strasburg; and her loving dog, Sissy.

A memorial service for Mrs. Duffield was conducted Saturday, March 18, 2017, at Stover Memorial Chapel, Strasburg, with the Rev. Bill Wade officiating.

Myrtle O. Gentry


Myrtle Virginia Ornduff Gentry, 95, of Front Royal, passed away Monday, March 20, 2017.

Mrs. Gentry was born on Dec. 11, 1921, in Abingdon, daughter of Stuart Hutton Ornduff and Hazel Elizabeth Sexton Ornduff. Mrs. Gentry lost her mother and was raised from the age of 11 by her father and stepmother Lillian Ornduff.

Surviving are two sons, Douglas Wayne Gentry of Chillhowie and Jerry Michael Gentry of Front Royal; three daughters, Judy Lynn Jordan of Warrenton, Deborah Elizabeth Warren of Perryville, Ark., and Connie Sue Gentry of Strasburg; three brothers, Irvin Ornduff, Malcolm Ornduff, and Larry Ornduff all of Abingdon; two sisters, Joyce Ornduff and Karen Ornduff both of Abingdon; 13 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, March 23 at 10 a.m. at the Culpeper National Cemetery with Sammy Campbell officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Gentry's memory to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are being handled by Maddox Funeral Home Inc., Front Royal.



Lucille C. Smith


Lucille Curry Smith of Orlando, Fla., formerly of Front Royal, died on Feb. 25, 2017.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 25, at Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Arrangements are being handled by Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal.



Gene H. Stonebreaker


Gene Harrison Stonebreaker, 78, of Front Royal, passed away on Sunday, March 19, 2017.

Mr. Stonebreaker was born on June 21, 1938, in Front Royal, to Joseph Haven Stonebreaker and Gladys Menefee Stonebreaker.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Bonnie G. Hamman Stonebreaker; three daughters, Deborah Jean Tharpe, Donna Lynn Santmyers and Sandra Gail Long; two brothers, Roger Stonebreaker and Donald Stonebreaker; sister, Connie Stonebreaker; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his son, Gene Harrison Stonebreaker Jr.; daughter, Rhonda Sue Stonebreaker and his brothers, Richard and Bobbie Stonebreaker.

The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. today at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 W. Main St. funeral services will follow, with the Rev. Christof Weber officiating. Burial will be at Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Margaret K. Torrence


Margaret Virginia Knoch Torrence, 94, of Charles Town, W.Va., passed away Sunday, March 19, 2017.

Margaret was born Dec. 31, 1922, in Front Royal, daughter of William Lee and Leslie Tharpe Smedley.

She was preceded in death by her first husband of 59 years Henry John Knoch Jr, who passed in 2003.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Clarence William Smedley, Charles Louis Smedley, Fredrick Smedley, Mabel Mae Smedley, Rose Lee Smedley Henry and Janet Marie Smedley Williams.

Surviving are her husband of 12 years, the Rev. John F. Torrence of Charles Town; stepchildren, Mary and David; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon today at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 W. Main St., followed by a funeral service conducted by the Rev, James Riley. Burial will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 330 Hospice Lane, Kearneysville, W.Va. 25430.



Cora S. Underwood


Cora Sue Underwood, 68, of Strasburg and formerly of Front Royal, passed away March 13, 2017.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 25, at Phelps Funeral Chapel, 311 Hope Drive, Winchester.

Arrangements are being handled by Phelps Funeral & Cremation Service, Winchester.
