William C. Adams


William Chester "Bill" Adams, 87, of Strasburg, passed away Sunday, April 16, 2017.

Mr. Adams was born Sept. 7, 1929, in Hanna City, Ill., son of the late Clarence William Adams and Agnes Vicary Adams.

Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Jean Adams; one son, William Chester Adams Jr. of Severna Park, Md.; two daughters, Karen Jenkins of Richmond and Nancy Slemmer of Front Royal; half sister, Neta Rauls of Illinois; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held Tuesday, April 25, in the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, with Pastor Danny Clegg officiating.

Arrangements were handled by Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal.



Faye Curtis


Faye Curtis, 76, of Front Royal, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 23, 2017.

Faye was born on July 30, 1940, in Takoma Park, Md., to the late Francis Curtis and Frances Marshall Curtis and grew up in Washington, D.C.

She is survived by her daughter, Ann Muldoon, and her pets Little Bear and Lucy.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of Warren County, 1245 Progress Drive, Front Royal, VA 22630.



Mark A. Hembry


Mark Anthony Hembry, 52, of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and formerly of Front Royal, passed away on Friday, April 21, 2017.

Mark was born on Feb. 25, 1965, in Front Royal, son of Ruby Myers Hembry of Richmond and the late Eugene Ellsworth Hembry.

Surviving with his mother are his wife, Keisha Hembry; maternal grandmother, Jane Mitchell of Front Royal; stepfather, Gerald Brown Jr. of Richmond; one son, Mark Anthony Waddell of White Post; two daughters, Jazime Hembry and Jaymie Hembry, both of Tennessee; stepson, Darius Patterson of Tennessee; one sister, Carolyn Hembry of North Carolina; one brother, James "Jay" Hembry of North Carolina; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A home going service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 W. Main St., conducted by The Rev. Gene Ford. Interment will follow in Good Hope Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.



Virginia K. Lang


Virginia Marie Kiernan Lang, 93, of Front Royal, passed away Monday, April 17, 2017.

Mrs. Lang was born Nov. 24, 1923, in New York City, a daughter of U.S. Navy Capt. James Eugene Kiernan and Helen Kenny Kiernan.

Mrs. Lang is survived by her children, Janice (James) Stokes of Tappahannock, William Lang of Fredericksburg, and Patricia Moore of Front Royal; sister Geraldine Johnson of Easton, Md.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations in her name be made to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, stjude.org, or the Disabled American Veterans, dav.org.

A funeral service will be conducted at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.

Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, is handling the arrangements.



The Rev. John D. Lyerly


The Rev. John Doward Lyerly, 78, of Front Royal, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, April 18, 2017.

The Rev. Lyerly was born on July 20, 1938, in Rockingham, N.C., son of the Rev. Joseph Edward Lyerly and Edith Mae Fulton Lyerly.

Surviving are his wife, Lynn Diane Green Lyerly; two sons, Ryan Matthew Lyerly of Front Royal and John Lyerly of North Carolina; three daughters, Stephanie Rae Lyerly Deese, Pamela Silek and Angela Lyerly Gibson, all of Front Royal; one stepson, Erin Hardy of Moorefield, W.Va.; two sisters, Elizabeth Darby of Norfolk and Nell Lyerly of North Carolina; two brothers, Joseph Lyerly of Rockingham and Harry Lee Lyerly of Florida; 16 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Lyerly was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.

A celebration of life was held on Monday, April 24, at Maddox Funeral Home, front Royal, with the Rev. Henry Stanley officiating.

Joanne C. Terry


Joanne Louise Cather Terry, 85, of Front Royal, passed away on Tuesday, April 18, 2017.

Mrs. Terry was born on April 5, 1932, in Parkersburg, W.Va., to Hubert L. Cather and Gladys Johnson Cather.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Keith Terry, and her grandson, Bobby Robinson.

Survivors include four daughters, Karen Cary, Charlotte Terry Bowman, Kathy Terry Flenner and Rosalie T. Hollenbaugh, all of Front Royal; brother, Robert Cather of Richmond; sisters Kitty Cather of California and Bonnie Cather of Georgia; eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 26, at Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal, with Sammy Campbell officiating. Burial followed in Panorama Memorial Gardens.

Harold H. Whittington


Harold Hunter Whittington, 78, of Strasburg, passed away Saturday, April 22, 2017.

Mr. Whittington was born Nov. 14, 1938, in Zepp, a son of Katie Orndorff Whittington and the late Omer Hunter Whittington.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Hunter Whittington; and two sisters, Loretta Moore and Jean Racey.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Feathers Whittington of Strasburg; son Hal Whittington; three grandchildren; siblings Linda Haun of Woodstock, Sandra Click of New Market and Jack Whittington of Middletown.

A funeral service for Mr. Whittington was conducted Wednesday, April 26, at St. Stephen Lutheran Church with Pastor Heidi David-Young officiating. Burial followed in St. Stephen Cemetery with full military honors by Shenandoah American Legion Post 77, Strasburg.
