Obituaries — Warren County


Frances W. Benoit


Frances Pauline "Polly" Whetzel Benoit, 101, a native and longtime resident of Strasburg, went to be with her Lord April 18, 2017.

She was born Oct. 13, 1915, in Frederick County to Roy Gilbert Whetzel and Alice Coffelt Whetzel, and was preceded in death by her siblings, Corrinne Phillips, Winifred Gonsalves and Norman Whetzel, as well as her husband, Air Force Staff Sgt. Fred Benoit.

She is survived by five nieces and one nephew, as well as her two loving children, Sandra Benoit Averette, and Ronald Benoit; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Interment and a memorial for Polly is planned for 11 a.m. Oct. 13, 2017, in the Lebanon Church Cemetery, Lebanon Church.

Memorial donations may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester, VA 22601; Strasburg Fire Department; or Grace Baptist Church Building Fund, 1255 Hoover Road, Woodstock.



Dorn S. Blanton


Dorn Ritenour Smith Blanton ìPolly,î 88, of Bentonville and Winchester, died at her home.

Mrs. Blanton was born May 6, 1928 in Front Royal. She was raised by her grandparents Nannie Palmer Ritenour and John Ritenour and her uncle Charles Dewey Ritenour.

Surviving are three children, Harry Smith Jr., Patricia Stephens and Susan Smith; three grandchildren; three great-grandsons; and two great-great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Harry Smith Sr., and her second husband, Doug Blanton.

A graveside service was held on Monday, May 1, at Prospect Hill Cemetery, conducted by Pastor Linda Lowe.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester, VA 22601.



Harold Brinklow


Harold "Eddie" Brinklow, 69, of Kernersville, N.C., went to be with his Lord on April 20, 2017.

Eddie was formerly of Front Royal and was born in Warren County on Oct. 30, 1947, son of Volunta Mae, who preceded him in death in 1962, and James E. Brinklow, who preceded him in death in 1993.

He also was preceded in death by his sister Linda Jean Brinklow in 1962.

Eddie leaves behind two brothers, James "Jimmy" Brinklow and Jack Miller, both of Front Royal; two sons, Rodney Brinklow of Front Royal and Josh Brinklow of Colorado; one daughter, Tabatha Peer of Front Royal; and several grandchildren, uncles, and cousins. He also leaves behind his special companion, Betty Guierrez, and dog, Bella.

As requested, he was cremated and will have a graveside service next to his mother on at 1 p.m. today in Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Local arrangements are being handled by Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal.



Hubert Drummond Jr.


Hubert "Joe" Drummond Jr. 76, of Strasburg, passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2017.

He was born Feb. 4, 1941, in Strasburg, a son of Hubert and Ella Bauserman Drummond Sr.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Dorothy L. Drummond.

Survivors include his wife, Susie Ryman Drummond of Strasburg; two sons, Brian Drummond and David Drummond, both of Strasburg; two grandchildren; his siblings, John Drummond of Winchester, Mary Jane Jenkins, Laura Belle Sonner of Strasburg; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service for Mr. Drummond was conducted Sunday, April 30, at St. Stephen Lutheran Church with the Revs. Heidi David-Young and James Baseler officiating. Burial followed in St. Stephen Cemetery.

Virginia B. Edwards


Virginia Mae Walther Barton Edwards, 76, of Front Royal, passed away on Sunday, April 30, 2017.

Mrs. Edwards was born Dec. 19, 1940, in Front Royal, to Jesse Walther and Virginia Deavers Walther.

Survivors include her companion, Simmie Barton Jr.; three daughters, Violet Pompanio, Debbie Richardson and Mary Lou Blankenship; two sons, Bruce Edward Barton and Ricky Darell Barton; three brothers, Bo Walther, Frankie Walther and William Walther; sister, Judy Jenkins; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and her dog, Lacey.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 W. Main St., where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of Warren County, 1245 Progress Drive, Front Royal, Virginia 22630.



Charles M. Evans


Charles Michael "Mickey" Evans, 71, of Strasburg, passed away Thursday, April 27, 2017.

Mr. Evans was born Dec. 27, 1945, in Alexandria, a son of John Edward and Alice Irene Phillips Evans.

Surviving are his wife, Sarah Katherine "Kay" Stephenson Evans; his children, Michael Evans Jr. of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Lori A. Evans of Front Royal, J. Erik Evans of Leesburg and Kelli Mercado of Sorrento, Fla.; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial funeral service was conducted Sunday, April 30, at Strasburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. John B. Haynes Jr. officiating.

Leona O. Pullen


Leona Oliver Pullen, 71, of Front Royal, passed away on Wednesday, April 19, 2017.

Mrs. Pullen was born on September 9, 1945 in Front Royal to the late William J. Estes and Amanda M. Heflin Estes.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William E. Pullen; sisters, Virginia Moore, Betty Dodson, Margaret Brister, Rena Vencil and Barbara Thompson and brothers, William Estes, Wallace Estes and Giles Estes.

Survivors include three sons, Mark Pullen of Strasburg, Tony Pullen and Bradley Pullen, both of Front Royal; eight grandchildren and a great-granddaughter; three sisters, Helen East of Spotsylvania, Elsie Brown of Front Royal and Joan Atchinson of Alexandria; brother Clayton Estes of Front Royal and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 1, at Maddox Funeral Home, with Terry O'Neil Metz officiating. Burial followed in Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Priscilla A. Shifflett


Priscilla A. Shifflett, 84, of Woodstock, passed away Thursday, April 20, 2017, at Heritage Hall.

She was born Jan. 12, 1933, in Loudoun County, to Samuel Curtis and Rosa Sprouse Breckenridge.

She was preceded in death by her parents, son Kim Shifflett, and brother Samuel Breckenridge.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years and seven months, Herschal Shifflett; four daughters, Kathy Karen (David) Lewis of Winchester, Ky., Jacqueline (Donnie) Hoffman of Edinburg, Darcy (William) Sonner of Augusta, W.Va. and Jeanette (Todd) Bly of Woodstock; one sister, Barbara Shifflett of Texas; 11 grandchildren, Amy Ruckman, Jennifer Runion, Christopher Jones, Aaron Baker, Destiny Shifflett, Phillip Shifflett, Nicholas Shifflett, William Sonner, Cody Long, Shaina Mink and Logan Sonner; three stepgrandchildren, Travis Hoffman, Lisa Hoffman and Sean Lewis; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Saturday, April 22, 2017, at First Baptist Church in Woodstock. Pastor Darryl George officiated. Burial was private in Fairfax Memorial Park, Fairfax.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Association, Central and Western Virginia Chapter, 1160 Pepsi Place, Suite 306, Charlottesville, VA 22901.

Arrangements were handled by Heishman Funeral Home, Valley Funeral Service, Branch Bowmans Crossing.



Charles Williams


Charles "Scott" Williams, 57, of Arlington, passed away on April 30, 2017.

Scott was born on May 14, 1959, in Front Royal, to Charles Dudley Williams and Gloria Jean Talbott Williams.

He was preceded in death by his father and brother, Donnie Williams.

Surviving along with his mother are his grandmother, Alma Talbott of Virginia Beach; three sisters, Tracy Clegg of Marshall, Lisa Hayes of Winchester and Shelly Dietzler of Front Royal; two brothers, Ronnie Williams of Front Royal and Steve Williams of White Post; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

A funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, May 5, at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 W. Main St., with Pastor Greg Amos officiating. The family will receive friends after the service until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
