Elwood B. Bennett


Elwood Benjamin Bennett, 76, of Manassas, passed away Friday, Aug. 11, 2017.

Mr. Bennett was born Nov. 30, 1940, in Front Royal. He was a son of the late Oscar and Susie Bennett. He also was preceded in death by his daughter Sherry Smelser.

Survivors include his two daughters, Pam Jenkins of Front Royal and Debra Bennett of Woodstock; two sisters, Dorothy Smelser and Lorraine Williams, both of Front Royal; brother Oscar Bennett Jr. of Berryville; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 W. Main St.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the family, care of Pam Jenkins, 25 Dungadin Road, Front Royal.



Sandra J. Eyler


Sandra Jeanne Eyler, 64, of Stephens City, passed away Sunday, Aug. 13, 2017.

Ms. Eyler was born July 22, 1953, in Corona, Calif. She was a daughter of the late Fred Rieger and Ardelia Ruth Smith Rieger. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Eyler, and her sister, Marylynn Pittman.

Survivors include her son Robert L. Eyler II of Gainesville; two daughters, Melissa J. Smith of Manassas and Samantha N. Barrett of Stephens City; brother Donald Rieger of Yorktown; and 10 grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 21, at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 W. Main St., with Sammy Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in Stonewall Memorial Gardens, Manassas. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Lucy O. Foster


Lucy Oliver Foster, 89, of Flint Hill, passed away Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017.

Mrs. Foster was born Dec. 20, 1927, in Warren County. She was a daughter of Marion R. and Ida Revells Oliver.

She is survived by her husband, Charles H. Foster; her daughters Sandra Hawkins of Strasburg, Charlotte Turnmeyer and Sharon Dodson, both of Flint Hill; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters Shirley Braithwaite of Cross Junction, and Eleanor Knight of Berryville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, James C. Oliver, Marion ìBuckî Oliver, Charles ìWiggyî Oliver, two sisters, Helen Linaburg and Betty Lowery and great grandson.

A funeral service was conducted Tuesday, Aug. 15, at Flint Hill United Methodist Church, with Pastor Sara Keeling officiating. Burial followed in Flint Hill Cemetery.

Amy W. Hartley


Amy Warlick Hartley, 50, of Front Royal, passed away Aug. 11, 2017.

Amy was born in Charlotte, N.C. She was a daughter of the late Mr. Roger Dean Warlick and Mrs. Cecilia Wise Denton.

Amy was married to Mr. W. Craig Hartley Jr. in 1989 and is the mother to their children, Mr. Trevor Spencer Hartley and Ms. Emma Kaitlin Hartley, all of Front Royal. In addition to her husband, children and mother, she is survived by her sister Lori Warlick Redmond, of Rural Hall, N.C., and brother Jeremy "Chip" Warlick, of Six Mile, S.C.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017, at Warren County High School, 155 Westminster Drive. Arrangements are being coordinated by Maddox Funeral Home, 105 West Main St., Front Royal, VA 22630.

Although Amy has asked for donations to the charities identified below be made in lieu of flowers, those preferring to send flowers may send them to the funeral home and they will be delivered to the service site. William E. Hill


William E. Hill, 80, of Front Royal, and formerly of Herndon, passed away Aug. 8, 2017.

He was born March 13, 1937, in Washington, D.C., He was a son of the late Ernest Kingsley Hill and Frances Bursey Koontz Hill.

He is survived by his four daughters, Theresa June Mostiller of Donalds, S.C., Ginger Grace Hill of Stephens City, Cheryl Ann Cinelli of Dania, Fla., and Susan Frances Wickham of Stephens City; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; his two cats, Pretty and Peanut; two sisters, Joanna Haymes of Chatham and Carolyn Presgraves of Aldie; and two brothers, Jack Hill of Aldie and Karol Hill of Daytona Beach, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Patsy McMullan and infant brother Walter Hill.

A funeral service was conducted Sunday, Aug. 13, at Adams-Green Funeral Home, Herndon. Interment followed in Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Herndon.

Frances I. Hottle


Frances I. Hottle, 95, of Strasburg, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2017.

Frances was born July 12, 1922 in Rockingham County. She was a daughter of the late Cecil W. and Pearl (Hepner) Pence of Timberville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Nellie Kipps, Eva Pence and Treva Pence.

She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Irving L. Hottle; her children, Gary of Front Royal, Ronald of Clear Brook, and Ellen Geisert of Lynchburg; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service for Mrs. Hottle was conducted Monday, Aug. 14, at Mount Zion Lutheran Church, New Market, with Pastor Debbie Dukes officiating. Burial followed in the Mount Zion Lutheran Church cemetery.

Margaret B. Kidwell


Margaret Blanche Kidwell, 77, of Front Royal, passed away Sunday, Aug. 13, 2017.

Mrs. Kidwell was born Aug. 16, 1939 in Rockland. She was a daughter of the late Elton McKinley Welch and Fannie Haun Welch. She also was preceded in death by two husbands, Lloyd Peyton Sr. and William Turner Kidwell; daughter Elizabeth Lee Koon; two brothers, two sisters, two stepdaughters and a stepson.

Survivors include her son, Lloyd Peyton Jr. of Front Royal; sister, Roxie Lee Foster of Front Royal; two stepdaughters; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; numerous nieces and nephews and two very special great-nephews.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, Aug. 16, at Prospect Hill Cemetery, with Sammy Campbell officiating.

Mark A. McHenry


Mark Alan McHenry, 52, of Strasburg, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017.

Mark was born May 1, 1965, in Grove City, Pa. He was a son of Mary A. Knauff McHenry of Lehigh Acres, Fla., and the late Clarence H. McHenry.

Surviving along with his wife Carolyn A. Moan McHenry are two sons, Joshua W. McHenry of Winchester and David C. McHenry of Strasburg; daughter Natasha H. McHenry of Shanks, W.Va.; two sisters, Joyce Allen of Muce, Fla., and Rhonda Adams of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; and one grandson.

A funeral Mass was held Tuesday, Aug. 15, at the St. Mary's Historic Church, 5606 Vogue Road, Fairfax Station, with Father Francis Peffley officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Freedom Service Dogs of America, 7193 S. Dillon Court, Englewood, CO 80112.

Carolyn P. Mitchell


Carolyn Virginia Payne Mitchell, 74, of Front Royal, passed away Thursday, Aug. 10, 2017.

Carolyn was born Nov. 2, 1942 in Woodstock. She was a daughter of the late Lester Floyd and Nannie Caroline Kendall Payne and the wife of the late Carl Junior Mitchell.

Carolyn was a mother to Carolyn Hallman. Also surviving are two sisters, Haley Drummonds of Winchester and Helen Hope of Roanoke; her special companion Charlie Morris; and a number of nieces, nephews, and their families.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert ìBobbyî Kendall Payne, Harold Lester Payne, and William ìBillyî Edward Payne.

A funeral service was held Monday, Aug. 14, at Front Royal Church of the Brethren, conducted by Pastors Bobby and Diann Whetzel. Burial followed in Shenandoah Memorial Park, Winchester.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Front Royal Church of the Brethren Memorial Fund, 106 W. 13th St., Front Royal, VA 22630.

Lennis F. Russell


Lennis F. Russell, 95, departed this life on Aug. 10, 2017.

Lennis, who was also affectionately known as ìCheata,î was born June 23, 1922, in Riverton. She was a daughter of the late William and Bessie Campbell Fuqua.

She was preceded in death by her husband Richard Neville Russell and her son Richard N. Russell Jr.

Surviving are Julie Russell, Elizabeth Hill and Mary Robinson; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A memorial gathering was held Wednesday, Aug. 16, at the Dell Amphitheater in the Northern Fauquier County Community Park, Marshall. Interment was a private service for her family.

Charles A. Vance


Charles Allen ìMickeyî Vance, 76, of Middletown, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2017.

Mr. Vance was born on Sept. 17, 1940, in Woodstock. He was a son of the late Charles Milton Vance and Anna Lee Baker Vance Moreland and raised by his aunt and uncle, Leo and Flora Fish.

Surviving are his wife Joyce A. Vance; two sons, Charles R. ìMickeyî Vance of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Michael Weeks of Chesapeake; five daughters, Tammy North of Woodstock, Vickey Lake of Front Royal, Randy White of Gerrardstown, W.Va., Julie Clowser of Stephens City, and Tracey Crim of Middletown; one sister, Carolyn Miller of Bridgewater; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Vance was preceded in death by two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be private. Arrangements are being handled by Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal.
