Nancy L. Conway


Nancy Lee (Swack) Conway of Front Royal, formerly of Penfield, Pa., went to be with her Lord on Friday Aug. 25, 2017.

Born July 7, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Joseph G. and Ella Mae (Williams) Swack. Nancy was married to Marlin Kline Conway, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Conway is survived by her sister Pegg Standridge of California and her brother Joseph J. Swack of Virginia. Another sister, Judy, passed at a very early age.

Nancy was the mother of six children, five sons and one daughter: Michael of West Virginia; Joni Hudak of Virginia; William of Maryland; Christopher of Pennsylvania; Joel of Pennsylvania.

Another son, Marlin passed in 2009. She had 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and five nieces.

Arrangements are being handled by Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal.



George C. Crossman Jr.


George Christopher Crossman Jr. of Strasburg passed away on Aug. 24, 2017 in Columbia, Md., at the age of 65.

George was born on Sept. 8, 1951, in Chelsea, Mass., to George and Dorothy Crossman, who preceded him in death.

George is survived by his wife, Donna; children Erica Stanley of Richmond and Alicia Power of Apex, N.C.; and his siblings, Joan Guidi of Reading, Mass., Deborah Kwiatek of Reading, Mass., Sheila Toomey of Kemah, Texas, Mary LoPresti of North Kingston, R.I., and Brian Crossman of Acton, Mass.; and four grandchildren.

George Crossman's memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at St. John Bosco Catholic Church, 315 N. Main St., Woodstock. George's celebration of life will follow the memorial service at North Mountain Vineyard and Winery, 4374 Swartz Road, Maurertown.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to American Heart Association in George's name.

Arrangements were handled by Stover Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., Strasburg.



James S. Gates


James Stuard Gates, 51, of Woodstock, passed away Friday, Aug. 18, 2017, in Front Royal.

He was born Oct. 26, 1965, in Washington, D.C., and was a son of Stuard Dwight Gates of Woodstock and the late Judith Darlene Barrett Gates.

Surviving, along with his father, are two sons, Andrew Gates of Purcellville and David Gates of Blacksburg; and a brother, Ken Gates of Leesburg.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Edward J. Haug


Edward Joseph Haug, 62, of Strasburg, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 27, 2017.

Mr. Haug was born July 15, 1955, in Alexandria, and was a son of the late Robert Haug and Joan Norton Haug. He also was preceded in death by his daughter, Kristen Haug on Sept. 9, 2001, and his sister, Kathleen Shaffer on Aug. 8, 2015.

Survivors include his wife, Roberta Smith Haug of Strasburg; daughter, Brittany Leigh Haug, currently serving in Iraq; stepdaughter Rachel Cammer of Martinsburg, W.Va.; stepson Brenden Cammer of Inwood, W.Va.; sister Mary Haug Becker (Joe) of Front Royal; two stepgrandchildren and two nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Maddox Duneral Home, 105 W. Main St. A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1, at the funeral home.

Arthur Jaeger


Arthur (Art) Jaeger, 71, of Linden and Alexandria, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2017.

Art was born to Erwin and Ethyl Schroder Jaeger on May 3, 1946, in Paterson, N.J., and grew up in Ridgewood, N.J.

Art is survived by his wife, Aletha Kelly Collinson Jaeger; and brother, Erwin Jaeger of Oak Ridge, Tenn. Through his marriage to Aletha, he is survived by two stepchildren, stepdaughter Carrie L. McAleese, and stepson Kevin M. Collinson; two granddaughters; and three great-grandsons.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to a charity of your choice.

Fred T. Settle


Fred Thomas Settle, 81, of Front Royal, died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2017.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, Aug. 29, at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, Culpeper. Interment followed in Sperryville Cemetery with military honors provided by Culpeper VFW Post 2524.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Chester Gap Volunteer Fire Department, 13 Headwaters Road, Chester Gap, VA 22633.
