Obituaries — Warrren County


Joan R. Bickle


Joan "Jo" Spangler Richard Bickle, 89, of Strasburg, passed away Monday, Sept. 18, 2017.

She was born March 31, 1928 in Strasburg, and was the daughter of the late Harry "Jake" and Mabel Clark Richard. She also was preceded in death by her husband J.C. "Bud" Bickle; son Rhett Clark Bickle; sister Gene Richard Hupp; and two brothers, Benjamin Clark Richard Sr. and Jack Harold Richard.

Surviving are two daughters, Ginny Bickle Hamrick of Strasburg and Teri Bickle Garrard of Nokesville; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; plus numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service was held Saturday, Sept. 23, at Strasburg Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with a committal in Riverview Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Strasburg Christian Church (DOC), 165 High St., or Strasburg Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 620, Strasburg, VA 22657.

Arrangements were handled by Stover Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., Strasburg.



John C. Brown Jr.


John Carroll "J.C." Brown Jr., 69, of Strasburg, passed away Thursday, Sept. 21, 2017.

J.C. was born Sept. 17, 1948, in Front Royal, and was a son of the late John Carroll and Geraldine Johnson Brown Sr.

Survivors include his loving companion and mother of his children, Lana; his children Toni C. Miller of Mineral and John C. "Butch" Brown III of Fredericksburg; two grandchildren; and two sisters, Brenda Styles and Penny Rales, all of Florida.

A memorial service for J.C. will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at the Stover Memorial Chapel, 177 N. Holliday St., Strasburg, with Mitchell Ball officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

William J. Crump


William "Billy" Dwayne Joseph Crump, 25, of Front Royal, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2017.

Billy was born March 23, 1992, in Fairfax, and was the son of Robert Allen Crump of Baltimore and Patricia Suzanne Green of Hilton Head, S.C..

Surviving along with his parents are his sister, Megan Crump of Grandy, N.C.; his brother Philip Crump of Blacksburg; his grandparents; numerous aunts and an uncle and many other family members that loved him dearly.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at Prospect Hill Cemetery, 200 E. Prospect St., conducted by Chuck Eshelman.

In lieu of flowers, his family asks that you please consider donating to the Autism Speaks organization.

Robert L. Drummond Sr.


Robert Lee Drummond Sr., 87, of Strasburg, passed away Monday, Sept. 25, 2017.

Mr. Drummond was born May 12, 1930, in Strasburg, and was a son of the late Jesse James and Pearl Nickols Drummond.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five siblings, James Christian "J.C." Drummond, Harry Edward Drummond, Roy Samuel Drummond, Donald Wayne Drummond and Anna Mae Silvious.

Survivors include his wife, Kay Elizabeth Hockman Drummond of Clary; his children, Linda Earhart of Stephens City, Robert "Bobby" Drummond Jr. of Clary, and Teresa Bromley of Strasburg; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and his siblings Ray Drummond of Winchester and Sally Collette of Strasburg.

A graveside service for Mr. Drummond will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, in the Lebanon Church Cemetery with the Revs. Kathleen Haynes and John Fogle officiating. Friends and relatives may visit at the home of Mrs. Drummond at any time.

Arrangements are being handled by Stover Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., Strasburg.



Polly M. Nichols


Polly May Nichols, 80, of Linden, passed away Monday, Sept. 25, 2017.

Mrs. Nichols was born May 9, 1937, in Manassas, and was a daughter of the late Johnny ìJohnî Mills and Lillian Sprouse Mills. She also was preceded in death by her husband Hubert Franklin Nichols and sister Elsie Taylor.

Survivors include three daughters, Karen Wines of Stephens City, Mary Laing of Front Royal and Patricia King of Front Royal; son Chris Nichols of Linden; brother Robert ìBobbyî Mills of New Market; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 W. Main St.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 29, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Terry Hendricks officiating. Burial will follow in Linden Church Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association to support Pulmonary Fibrosis research at lung.org.



Inous Powers


Inous Powers, mother of Carol Barr of Rockland, died peacefully Saturday, Sept. 23, aged 103.

Mrs. Powers was a lifelong resident of Coeburn, but for the past three years had lived at Heritage Hall, near Big Stone Gap. She celebrated her 103rd birthday with a party just two months ago.

Among many survivors, in addition to her daughter, Carol, are son-in-law, Malcolm Barr Sr., of Rockland and Malcolm Barr Jr., of Gloucester Point.

The funeral was held Wednesday, Sept. 27, at Estes Funeral Home, Coeburn.



Stephen A. Shurtz


Stephen A. Shurtz, 65, of Front Royal, passed away Friday, Sept. 22, 2017, at his home.

He was born on Dec. 13, 1951, in Washington, D.C., to Vera Fouts Shurtz and the late Dale Arthur Shurtz.

Surviving along with his mother are his very special friend Karen Eppard; daughter Michele Holbrook and his sister Susan Puckett.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Kathryn Marie Shurtz and Peggy Ann Foster.

Arrangements are being handled by Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal.



James M. Sipe


James Michael ìMikeî Sipe, 57, of Strasburg, passed away Sunday, Sept. 17, 2017.

Mike was born on Oct. 1, 1959, in Winchester, and was a son of Nancy Estep Simpson and the late James E. Sipe of Boyce.

Surviving along with his mother are his stepfather Gerald Simpson; partner Kim Lee; sons Michael Joseph Mennella and John Thomas Sipe; daughter Christina Mennella; stepsister Scarlet Simpson; a grandson; three stepgrandchildren; aunts and uncles and numerous cousins and a long extension of friends and musicians.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 W. Main St. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Terry Clark officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville.

Robert L. Timbers


Robert Lee Timbers, 69, of Linden, passed away Sept. 21, 2017.

Mr. Timbers was born Feb. 28, 1948, in The Plains, and was a son of the late Jessie Louis Timbers Sr. and Mamie Lee Grayson Timbers.

Surviving are his wife Phyllis A. Nicholson Timbers of Linden; three children, Steven Andrew Nicholson, Paula Ann Nicholson and Tanya E. Nicholson; grandchildren who he raised as his own, Isha B. Nicholson, Selena A. Nicholson and Makyla K. Castellanos; brothers Jessie Timbers, Landon Timbers, Melvin Timbers, Johnny Timbers, Anthony Timbers and Richard Timbers; sisters Alice Caison, Mamie (Rose) Morgan, Vicky Timbers and Ella Coe; numerous grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Gene Timbers and sister Mary Louise Timbers Starks.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 30, at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 W. Main St., Front Royal, followed by a Celebration of Life service conducted by Elder Landon Timbers.



Wanda K. Williams


Wanda Lee Kidwell Williams, 68, of Front Royal, passed away Monday, Sept. 18, 2017.

Mrs. Williams was born April 2, 1949, in Browntown, and was a daughter of the late William Turner Kidwell and Lurena Marie Jones Kidwell. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by her husband Eddie Williams Sr.; son Edward ìEddieî R. Williams Jr.; sisters Glory K. Smelser and Mary K. Campbell and brother Robert W. Kidwell.

Surviving are her sister Elizabeth Ann ìLibbyî Kidwell Haun and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, Sept. 26, at Maddox Funeral Home, conducted by Sammy Campbell. Interment followed in the Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Arrangements were handled by Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal.
