BASEBALL: Grottoes wins the District 3 crown

Little League all-star tournament play continued across the area last week.

In ages 9-10 softball, the Grottoes squad will be heading to the state tournament, which begins this week at Bridgewater’s Oakdale Park.

Grottoes, which went undefeated in District 3, Area 2 bracket play, swept Frederick County National, the district’s Area 1 (north) champs, in the best-of-three district finals. Last Monday, Grottoes topped Frederick County National, 18-2, at Elkton’s Blue Ridge Park. On Tuesday, Grottoes won, 17-0, at Frederick County American Little League.

The state tournament’s opening ceremony will be held Thursday at James Madison University’s softball field, with games starting on Friday.

Grottoes opens pool play against District 4 at 3:30 p.m. Friday, followed by games at 12:30 p.m. Saturday (Dist. 8), 3:30 p.m. Sunday (Dist. 6), 1:30 p.m. Monday (Dist. 15) and 10:30 a.m. Tuesday (Dist. 7). Championship semifinals and finals will be played on Wednesday, July 13.

Ages 11-12 baseball play kicked off last week in Broadway. Grottoes was 2-0 heading into Tuesday night’s matchup with Bridgewater, which was also 2-0. Grottoes opened with a 1-0 win over Harrisonburg and followed up with a 3-0 victory over Broadway. Elkton, meanwhile was 0-3, with losses to Bridgewater (17-5), Broadway (14-0) and Harrisonburg (10-0).

Grottoes and Elkton were slated to play at 6 p.m. Wednesday to finish pool play.

The Area 2 playoffs begin at 7 p.m. Friday and would continue at 11 a.m. Saturday, if needed. The best-of-three district playoffs begin at 7 p.m. Monday at Broadway.

In ages 9-10 baseball, Elkton was eliminated from the postseason with a 17-4 loss to Broadway last Tuesday in Grottoes. Broadway went on to take two games from Bridgewater to win the Area 2 title.

In Babe Ruth baseball play, the Keezletown 9U team finished third at the state tournament in Haymarket. Keezletown opened with a 7-3 loss to Arlington, but rebounded with a 7-6 victory over Summit Point. The local squad then edged Williamsburg, 5-4, and topped Arlington, 11-8. In the semifinals, Keezletown lost to Glen Allen, 8-5. Glen Allen fell to Manassas in the title game.

The Keezletown 10U baseball team won its district title and advanced to the state tourney, which begins Thursday in Herndon. Keezletown plays Stafford at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, then takes on Herndon at 6 p.m. Friday and Northside at 12:30 p.m. Saturday to close out pool play.

The Shenandoah 12U squad, meanwhile, was eliminated from state play over the weekend. Shenandoah opened with a 14-1 loss to Arlington, but topped Winchester, 4-3, in the next round. Shenandoah then topped Stafford, 16-14, but fell to Peachtree, 11-1, to see its postseason run come to a close.
