Strasburg Express wins back-to-back VBL titles


Strasburg came from four runs down in the seventh inning in Waynesboro to win the club’s second-straight Valley Baseball League championship.

The Express scored five times in the seventh inning of a 5-4 victory to complete a 2-0 finals sweep.

Shortstop Erick Delgado had the championship hit, ripping a double that plated Jeffrey Scott and Tyler Green.

Two batters earlierGreen had stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and laced a double into center field. Michael Curry and Jacob Tisevich scored to get Strasburg to within a run at 4-3.

Waynesboro had led 4-0 after six innings as T.J. Condon doubled in Zach Sterry for the fourth run of the contest.

The Generals’ starter, Tyler Howe, had been rolling through six shutout innings.

The Generals also played good defense behind him, turning a double play against the postseason’s hottest hitter, Brandon Quaranta, in the fourth and getting a 1-2-3 sixth inning after a nice diving stop and
throw by Sam Palensky. Haiden Lamb advanced to third in the fi rst inning but the Express couldn’t bring him home.

In the bottom half of the frame, Lamb had to leap to make a catch after chasing down a Sterry drive to deep centerfield.

Sterry got another hit to fall in center to start a fourth-inning rally. He scored on Kyle Jackson’s double and then Andrew Bullock snuck a double inpast the diving left fielder.

Condon added a third-straight RBI hit for a 3-0 Waynesboro lead.

First team All-league hurler Benjamin Dum lasted into the eighth for Strasburg and earned the win after scattering six hits over 7.2 innings.

Abraham Almonte got the save and retired Waynesboro with the tying run on base in both the eighth and ninth innings.
