Strasburg’s Swink becomes latest Ram to capture wrestling championship

Strasburg’s streak of individual state wrestling championships is still active after Brandon Swink’s performance in Salem last week.

Swink’s championship, which came after a 2-1 decision over Graham’s Tracy Hagerman, comes on the heels of individual championships from Kyle Sisk (2016) and Austin Cooper (2015).

Cooper, who won in 2015 as a sophomore in the 113-pound division, finished second in this year’s 138-pound division. He lost a 6-3 decision to Gabe Fisher from Grundy High School.

Grundy won its VHSL-record 20th straight state championship at the 2A level with 184 points. Strasburg finished in second with 114.5 points.

Cooper and Swink were two of five Rams to make the championship round, alongside Peyton Stickles (113), Dylan Campbell (145) and Ethan Duckworth (195).

Though only Swink won an individual championship, the high number of finalists propelled Strasburg to its lofty finish.

Campbell also lost on a decision against a Grundy opponent. Duckworth lost on a 4-3 decision to Graham’s Alex Hicks, whose overall record is 48-1.

Stickles, a freshman, was pinned by Grundy’s Brandon Owens.

Austin Miller (sixth place, 170) and Josh Pritchett (third place, 285) also earned medals.

Central, which finished in 12th with 32.5 points, got strong outings from Jacob Scibelli (120) and Ezra Smith (285), who both finished sixth in their respective weight classes.
