WRESTLING: Munoz takes second in Region 2A East

FISHERSVILLE – East Rockingham’s Christian Munoz claimed a bid to the 2A state wrestling championships by taking second place during last weekend’s Region 2A East finals at Wilson Memorial.

Munoz, a senior who entered the regionals with a 29-6 record, lost to Wilson senior Zac Denton, 10-8, in the 170-pound championship match. He still advances to the state tourney, which will be held this weekend in Salem.

At Wilson, Munoz opened with a default win over Strasburg’s Javian Moore, then earned an 8-7 decision over Clarke County’s Hunter Fiddler. In the semifinals, Munoz topped Goochland’s Brian Herrera to force the match with Wilson’s Denton, a senior who entered the tourney with a 30-7 record.

Munoz was one of five Eagles to advance out of Friday’s opening rounds, but the only one to make the state tournament.

At 120 pounds, sophomore Michael Ellen lost to Bruton’s Ben Marshall in his first match, but bounced back with a 6-5 win over Madison’s Zach Waters in the consolation round. Ellen then lost to George Mason’s Danny Mineo on Saturday morning.

Eagles’ 160-pounder, junior Ethan Armentrout, opened with a pin of Bluestone’s Logan Morris, but then lost to Nandua’s Matt Teasley in the quarterfinals. Armentrout then won, by forfeit, over Mason’s Andrew Coulson, before falling to Wilson’s Michael Holmes in the consolation bracket.

At 195 pounds, junior Hollis Merica won a 5-3 decision over Amelia’s Austin Yogi, but then lost to Clarke’s Bryan Wallace, the eventual champ, in the quarters. Merica rebounded with a 5-3 win over Bruton’s Conner Bauske, but then fell to Bluestone’s Roderick Bass in the consolation round.

ERHS’ 220-pounder, junior Stone Smith, pinned Nottoway’s D.J. Coleman in his first match, but then lost to Clarke’s Pete McLean, who finished third, in the next round. Smith topped Arcadia’s Chris Beasley, by forfeit, in the consolation round, but then lost to Stuarts Draft’s Brandon Meadows.

Also competing at regionals for the Eagles was freshman Jasmine Shelton (113 pounds), sophomore Nathaniel Hearn (126, win over Arcadia’s Emmanuel Zuniga in the consolation bracket), freshman Dustin Dove (132), senior Patrick Nott (138, win over Mason’s Chris Kim in the consolation rounds), sophomore Jacob Lanier (145), sophomore Ben Shelton (152), senior Tyson Price (182) and freshman Logan Dofflemyer (285, win over Nottoway’s Clarence Hartt in the opening round).

Overall, the Eagles placed 14th in the region. Clarke County topped Strasburg for the title, with Wilson placing third.
